MIDDLE EAST. HART R.
Colloquial Syriac as Spoken in the Assyrian Levies.
Mosul: Assyrian Press 1926. Square octavo 204 x 153 mm. Recent moderate brown cloth gilt-lettered spine. Small patch of red cloth affixed to lower board general light signs of handling the odd blot and smudge some neat contemporary annotations pest damage to top fore corner of two leaves with loss of a few letters pp. 83-6 one or two Japanese paper repairs yet this remains a very good copy. First and sole contemporary edition extremely scarce "compiled as a guide for both British and Assyrian personnel of the Iraq Levies to acquire a colloquial knowledge of the respective languages" introduction. The Iraq Levies also known as the Assyrian Levies was the first Iraqi military force formed by the British in British-controlled Iraq established initially in 1915 as a small mounted contingent of some 40 Arab horsemen raised by a Major J. I. Eadie of the Indian Army "from the tribes round Nasiriyah on the Euphrates for duty under the Intelligence Department" Browne. By 1922 the force had expanded to a little over 6 000 men drawn from many ethnic backgrounds including Marsh Arabs Kurds Assyrians Turkomans and Yezidis. The author Lieutenant Richard Hart MBE of the West Yorkshire Regiment acknowledges in his introduction the assistance of the owner of the Assyrian Press in Mosul Yosip d-Bet Qelaita "regarded as one of the best authorities of the Syriac language"; and also that of Shain Giwergis MBE 4th Battalion "formerly a schoolmaster of Baz" Hart and Giwergis both received the MBE in the 1926 Birthday Honours. Hart's book includes guides to pronunciation and vocabulary about 1 000 words for conversation common across the dialects of several Assyrian tribes which had intermingled in the refugee camps and among service personnel notes on Syriac grammar in English useful phrases "The Musketry Course" a description in both languages - soldiers were required to pass this each year "Narrative" alphabets and military terminology. The "Useful Phrases" section give insight into life in the Levies: military discipline interaction with local people and respect for their customs enlistments and discharges e.g. asking about one's tribe the orderly room disciplinary matters including being improperly dressed in the bazaar "The Country" fording rivers with loaded mules etc. health transport much on mules and their maintenance entertainment and salutations which includes the rather delightful but no doubt practical phrase "Tell the Agha that I am not allowed by the British Government to accept any presents and that I appreciate his kind offer". An online search of institutional libraries cites 8 locations only London Library St Andrews Phoenix Seminary Aiso Library Stanislaus County Library California State at Stanislaus National Library of Israel and National Dong Hwa University. Brigadier J. Gilbert Browne "The Iraqi Levies 1915-1932" Royal United Service Institution 1932. Mosul: Assyrian Press, hardcover

Godfrey Higgins 1772-1833 Was An English Magistrate And Landowner Who Was A Prominent Advocate For Social Reform. He Was Also A Keen Antiquarian. He Is Now Best Known For His Writings On Ancient Myths In Which He Asserts A Commonality Among Various Religious Myths Which He Traces Back To The Supposed Lost Religion Of Atlantis. He Has Been Called A "Political Radical Reforming County Magistrate And Idiosyncratic Historian Of Religions". Higgins' Work As A Magistrate Was Highlighted By Reformist Campaigns Within Which He "Courageously Exposed The Scandalous Treatment Of Pauper Lunatics And Campaigned For Parliamentary Reform Criticizing Excessive Taxation The Corn Laws And The Exploitation Of Children In Factories. In 1814 He Played A Leading Role In Uncovering The Abuse Of Patients At The York Lunatic Asylum After Rumors Of Serious Misconduct Had Come To His Attention. Higgins Was Appointed As A Governor Of The Asylum. In Anacalypsis Higgins Asserts A Commonality Among Various Religious Myths. "One Thing Is Clear-The Mythos Of The Hindus The Mythos Of The Jews And The Mythos Of The Greeks Are All At Bottom The Same; And What Are Called Their Early Histories Are Not Histories Of Humankind But Are Contrivances Under The Appearance Of Histories To Perpetuate Doctrines." Higgins Bluntly Declares That Every Ancient Author Without Exception Has Come To Us Through The Medium Of Christian Editors Who Have "Either From Roguery Or Folly Corrupted Them All.". " . "There Seems To Be Nothing Improbable In These Ethiopians Being The Tribe Of The Jews-The Tribe Of Jacob Or Israel. I Think These Ethiopians Did Come Under Jacob And Did Settle In Goshen And Gave The Names Of Maturea And Avaris To The City In Which They Dwelt." ."Solomon Was A Personification Or Incarnation Of Wisdom And The Jews Of Asia Minor Were A Tribe Or Colony From India Of Black Buddhists At Or About The Same Time With The Ioudi To SyriaUnder The Brahmin."."Theseus Bacchus sculapius &C. Kennett Austin Sometime Administrative Officer in the Libyan Desert and in Sinai
Bedouin Justice Laws & Customs Among the Egyptian Bedouin
Cambridge England: Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 9251. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean bright condition. The text pages are mostly clean and bright though there is some light toning and foxing beginning throughout. The endpapers have more noticeable toning. The front endpaper has a previous owner's inked name. "Written from the author's own experiences after spending more than seven years in the deserts of Egypt and Sinai it was intended to dispel the myths that had developed around Bedouin culture within western society. The text studiously avoids these forms of condemnation and sentimentalisation in focusing on particular examples of justice in practice thus revealing the subtle network of human relationships around which the culture was formed. It is written with an affection that reveals the author's genuine admiration for Bedouin traditions but does not shy away from revealing the problems within these traditions. This important book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Bedouin culture anthropology or law." . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Life Line. Abadan Merchant Navy Magazine.
Abadan: Abadan War Charities Central Fund 1943. Square octavo 205 x 170 mm 54 pp. wire-stitched in original printed paper wrappers. With laid-in "Supplement to the Abadan Merchant Navy Magazine" 8 pp. unbound as issued. Ship motifs in bronze to panel versos line-drawings to the text. Photographic illustrations to the Supplement. Wrappers detached from text-block the staple oxidised corners bumped rear panel variably discoloured. First edition of this magazine published by employees of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company to raise money for the Merchant Navy in the midst of the Second World War. The phrasing of the "Editorial Epilogue" and the foreword of A. V. Alexander First Lord of the Admiralty suggest that this was a one-off venture to coincide with a "Merchant Navy Week" to be held in October 1943; we trace no copies of this or any further iterations in libraries or in commerce and no references in secondary literature. Abadan was the site of first APOC refinery completed in 1912 and as a key oil field and the pre-eminent Gulf entrepôt it was one of the first targets to be secured during the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in 1941. A notice explains that "the Abadan War Charities Central Fund was inaugurated early in 1940 under the Chairmanship of His Britannic Majesty's Consul to co-ordinate and encourage voluntary efforts to raise money for war charities by the British and Indian staffs of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd. at Abadan Refinery Khorramshahr Ahwaz and Pipe Line Stations in Southern Persia and other British and Indian Communities in that area. Much generous support has also been given by the British and Allied Forces stationed in the vicinity and local Persian residents" p. 52. The fund projected to reach £50000 by the end of 1943 at the time of going to print was distributed between various causes with those in addition to Merchant Navy seamen and their dependants including "Welfare of Forces in Middle East" and "Welfare of Forces in Persia Iraq and Persian Gulf" though the largest sum £8000 was in fact earmarked for "Relief of Air Raid Distress" on the Home Front. Contributions include cartoons satirical verse a piece on "Wildfowl of the Shat-al-Arab River" "Concerning Oilwells" a brisk description of mishaps at sites including Masjid-i-Sulaiman Naft Khaneh and Haft Kel and "The Persian Gulf An Historical Sketch" which is based on the well-known book by Arnold Wilson. All pieces are signed anonymously pseudonymously or with initials with the exception of two short stories by Alec Waugh brother of Evelyn: "An Officer Learns a Lesson" and "A Happy Inspiration". An unusual and highly appealing survival. Abadan: Abadan War Charities Central Fund, unknown

First published in 1888 Doughty's classic account reached its third edition in 1921 still in two weighty volumes. In conceiving the much-needed Thin Paper Edition the publishers were able to contain the entire work complete with all its illustrations maps and plans in a single volume. The present copy is the second impression thereof. 'It has been considered convenient in this thin-paper one-volume edition to retain the general arrangement of the original two-volume edition as finally revised by the author. Thus the numbering of the pages will be found to start afresh at the beginning of volume two and the Index to remain as in the earlier editions' Publishers' Note. SCARCE ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.
