‎Une des entreprises les plus impressionnantes de l'histoire humaine. Que l'on y réfléchisse. Les membres d'un peuple ridiculement peu nombreux, possesseurs d'un microscopique lambeau du littoral méditerranéen, perché dans ce qui ressemblait assez à des nids d'oiseaux de mer sur les falaises et les rochers, se lancèrent dans des expéditions auxquelles pas un de leurs voisins n'aurait songé. A bord de bateaux gros comme des coquilles de noix, ils cinglèrent au large sur des eaux dont les deux millions et demi de kilomètres carrés leur étaient plus inconnus que la surface de la lune pour nous. Ils ne savaient ni où cette mer finirait, ni quelle était sa profondeur, ni quels dangers elle recélait. S'ils considéraient l'univers – ce qui est probable – comme un oeuf ouvert, ils devaient craindre d'arriver à un moment donné à la limite de la terre et ce qui pouvait les attendre là, ils n'en avaient aucune idée. Pourtant, ils ont fait voile vers le grand large. Qu'est-ce qui les poussait donc à affronter de tels périls ? L'appât du gain ? Il paraît inconcevable que tout un peuple se fût engagé à fond pour ce seul but. Il devait s'y ajouter autre chose: humeur vagabonde héritée des Bédouins, goût de la découverte, de l'aventure, du risque. Quels qu'aient été les bénéfices rapportés aux marchands par ces expéditions, ceux qui les entreprenaient étaient certainement plus que de simples commerçants. Ces hommes devaient avoir le désir ardent de s'accomplir et de s'affirmer. C'est pourquoi il convient de considérer l'exploration de la Méditerranée comme une oeuvre culturelle de grande valeur, même si aucun Homère sémitique ne s'est trouvé là pour la chanter. Gerhard Herm a retrouvé et suivi les traces des Phéniciens. De nombreux spécialistes confirment sa thèse: les hommes du Liban n'étaient pas seulement des filous et des imposteurs, comme il est écrit dans l'Odyssée. Déjà pour les habitants du bassin méditerranéen, ce peuple microscopique, ou plutôt ces peuples hétéroclites constituaient une énigme: comment étaient-ils parvenus à faire de la Phénicie la première puissance commerciale de l'époque en dominant tout l'Est de la Méditerranée ? Comment avaient-ils pu accumuler dans leurs comptoirs autant de richesses ? Un peuple uniquement voué au commerce, ne s'appuyant que sur sa supériorité maritime n'aurait jamais pu aller si haut. Ce n'est pas un hasard, si, même pour leurs ennemis, " Made in Phenicia " était un label de qualité...
