‎PERSIAN GULF.‎

‎Persian Gulf Pilot. N.P. No. 63.‎

‎London: published by the Hydrographer of the Navy 1967. Octavo. Original blue cloth title in yellow to spine and to the upper board. Folding general map frontispiece and 13 other full-page maps 21 plates of coastal profiles. Spine very slightly sunned light wear at the extremities a very good copy indeed. First published 1870 this eleventh edition following the tenth of 1955. All editions of these highly-detailed navigational handbooks to the Gulf tend to be uncommon. Beyond the specifically maritime aspects these handbooks did provide some basic background on local conditions climate items of trade and so forth. An interesting record of a time at which "extensive new building development" was beginning to "change the appearance of some of the towns notably Abu Zabi and Dubayy". "The picturesque town of Muscat is protected on its eastern and part of its southern side ands the western side by precipitous hills the remainder of the southern side and the western side is protected by a wall. Outside the wall and between it and the rugged hills encircling the town every available space is occupied by may huts"; "The coast between Dubayy and Abu Zabi Â… is except for a small village at which there are some date trees situated about 4 miles south-westward of Dubayy quite barren uninhabited Â…": "The town of Abu Zabi Â… extends for about 2 miles and consists in the main part of concrete buildings with a number of huts at the south-west end". Macro 290 for the 1924 7th edition. London: published by the Hydrographer of the Navy, hardcover‎
