‎A taste of heaven in Turkey gourmet: Cuisine of Gaziantep. 2 volumes set.‎

"A written source, this comprehensive about Gaziantep, the gourmet capital of Turkish cuisine has not been available until the publication of this book. Tahir Tekin Öztan and crew, whose mission has been to introduce Turkish cuisine, Especially cuisine of Gaziantep to the entire world, collected hundreds of recipes directly from primary sources channeling the region's deep cooking history. They travelled 5 thousand kilometers, taking 5 thousand photographs and talking to individuals in whose memory the history of this Gaziantep cuisine is truly engrained. Through the wisdom and knowledge of the elderly women of Gaziantep, the original recipes of ancestors came within reach. Actually, this book has been 150 years in the making! If these unique, easy to make at home recipes had not been compiled here, they would have been lost to time. Gaziantep's millennia old rich food heritage, worthy of competing with the best cuisines of the world, can endure by finding a place in our home kitchens. Through this book, Gaziantep's original local tastes are archived and preserved by committing them to paper, so they can take their place amongst other monuments of world food culture.".‎

‎TAKEKO HARADA, FATIH CIMOK.‎

‎Roads of ancient Anatolia. 2 volumes set.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Folio. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 2 volumes set: (240 p.; 240 p.). "The book brings together over 250 different ancient roads, rock-cut passes, road inscriptions, milestones, bridges and ruts from Phrygia to the Euphrates, the Euphrates region and beyond, and the Black Sea region. Anatolia entered into the historical era during the latter part of the Bronze Age, shortly before the foundation of the Hittite Kingdom. The pre-Hittite cuneiform tablets uncovered at Karum of Kanes (Kültepe) mention ass caravans moving back and forth between Mesopotamia and central Anatolia, a trip of some 1,000 km. Although these routes can tentatively be reconstructed there is no information about the roads. In a letter recovered from Kültepe, a merchant in tin asks his agent to divide the merchandise into small pieces, hide it into his clothes and bring it to town by the 'smugglers' track'; something usually done to avoid import taxes. His warning implies the existence of better roads than mountain tracks as early as the 1800s BC. For the journey between home and Anatolia the Assyrian merchants mostly employed asses or porters, and paved roads were not necessary. Thus the established caravan routes of the time, controlled by the local authority, were no more than roads in general sense. Still, the repeated use of the safest and easiest routes probably created more or less established caravan trails. The passes through high mountains and crossing points of the Euphrates were not many. Such sites were probably known and used by all the caravans.". Over 250 different ancient roads. Rock-cut passes. Road inscriptions. Milestones. Bridges. Ruts. Over 330 Colour Pictures. Volume 1 includes Western Anatolia from the Sea of Marmara to the Miditerranean / Southern Anatolia from Pamphylia to the Orontes. Volume 2 includes From Phrygia to the Euphrates / The Euphrates and beyond / Black Sea Region.‎

‎TAKIYETTIN MENGUSOGLU, (Turkish philosopher), (1905-1984).‎

‎Autograph letter signed 'Takiyettin Mengüsoglu' to a Turkish pasha.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original ALS by Takiyettin Mengüsoglu, to a Turkish pasha during 1960 Coup d'Etat. 30x21 cm. Chipped on margins. Otherwise a good paper. 2 p. Written by a pen in blue ink. Sent from Köln, Germany. Takiyettin Mengusoglu was a Turkish philosopher. Mengusoglu was born in Malatya, Turkey. After finishing high school he went to Germany and became a student of Nicolai Hartmann. He was known as Takiyettin Temuralp at that time and published Über die grenzen der erkennbarkeit bei Husserl und Scheler in German. He is the author of the university level textbook Felsefeye Giris (Introduction to Philosophy). Mengüsoglu founded a new school of anthropology which he called ontological anthropology. This anthropology deals with the man not through any conceptualization but through "his concrete bio-psychic wholeness". He believed that this new anthropology would be more suitable for approaching man and solving concrete problems in the human world. (Wikipedia).‎

‎TAKVÎM-I VEKÂYI [THE FIRST OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE IMPERIAL OTTOMAN].‎

‎["WEIRD ART OF A FRENCH NAMED DAGUERRE": DAGUERRE'S INVENTION IN THE FIRST OTTOMAN OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER] Takvim-i Vekâyi: Def'a 186, fî 19 S[aban] sene 1255 [i.e. Calendar of events: No 186, October 28, 1839].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original newspaper taken from a volume. Folio. (42,5 x 28 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [5] p.  Extremely rare early issue of this first official newspaper of the Ottoman Empire after the proclamation of Reform (Tanzîmât) in 1839,  informed Daguerre's new and weird invention ("photography" as it would be called in the 1850s) to the Ottoman peoples and readers. The article reads: "It is the talk of the town, steam engines have been able to run on rails in factories in recent years. Meanwhile, a man carefully focused on his thoughts so much and the craft turned into a strange art, and finally, a coquettish mirror (surface) appeared. This skillful Frenchman named Daguerre drew the lines of objects by reflecting the sunlight with the methods of the different science of art he learned, drew the contours of the objects, and gave 20 years secretly and openly to the formation of this strange art. Finally, he reached the goal and this event won the appreciation and admiration of everyone. This is to say, the image of the object, in the form of a large or small box free from light, is pictured inside by passing through the glass in front of it. In order for the reflected picture to be captured on a surface, some chemicals must be prepared. Daguerre has achieved this mix based on his experience. This substance applied on the plate is called iodine. After the plate is kept in the vapor of the iodine for a few minutes, it is immediately placed in the dark box, and the image passing through the window of the box is pictured for five minutes. Considering that some of the things that should be hidden are captured like this, it will be understood what a valuable invention this is...". In the continuation of the article, it is written that an Englishman named Talbot (Henry Fox Talbot) found the same thing with almost the same processes (!), but Daguerre had taken pictures before. Takvim-i Vekâyi was the first fully Turkish-language newspaper. It was launched in 1831 by Sultan Mahmud II, taking over from the Moniteur ottoman as the Official Gazette of the Ottoman Empire. With the beginning of the Tanzimat reform period, Takvim-i Vekayi produced versions in multiple language editions. It ceased publication in 1878, resuming in 1891-2, before being closed again. It resumed in 1908 until around 1922. In the 1831-1878 period it published a total of 2119 issues - an average of slightly less than one a week. ‎

‎TALAT S[AIT] HALMAN, (1931-2014).‎

‎The Turkish muse: Views and reviews, 1960s-1990s. Edited by Jayne L. Warner.‎

‎As New English Original blue cloth bdg. Mint. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [xx], 369, [1] p. Signed and inscribed by Halman to Jean Dunn. The Turkish Muse: Views and Reviews, 1960s-1990s, collects Talat S. Halman's book reviews written in English and, read chronologically, provides a unique perspective on the development of Turkish literature and criticism during the formative and later years of the Turkish Republic. The new genres adopted from Europe and, to a lesser extent, from the United States include the novel, the short story, the stage play, and the essay. The reviews collected in this volume reflect the way in which these genres developed and matured within their new milieu of Turkish letters. Establishing each book in its literary, social, and cultural Turkish context, Halman then addresses the work's more international or universal importance. Written over a period of four decades, these reviews illuminate the careers of many writers from their early work to their rise as leading Turkish poets, novelists, and dramatists-Ilhan Berk, Melih Cevdet Anday, Güngör Dilmen, Fazil Hüsnü Dagarca, and Yasar Kemal, to name just a few. More recent reviews discuss the work of such important figures as Hilmi Yavuz and Orhan Pamuk.‎

‎Taner Akcam, Vahakn N. Dadrian‎

‎Judgment at Istanbul: The Armenian Genocide Trials‎

‎8vo, "This book [by Vahakn Dadrian and Taner Akcam, one Armenian, one Turkish, both noted scholars of the Armenian Genocide] stands as a monument of original scholarship on the facts of the Genocide. The wealth of specific citations, the multiplicity of sources surveyed make this volume an invaluable and fundamental source for any future study." * The Armenian Mirror-Spectator Turkey's bid to join the European Union has lent new urgency to the issue of the Armenian Genocide as differing interpretations of the genocide are proving to be a major reason for the delay of the its accession. This book provides vital background information and is a prime source of legal evidence and authentic Turkish eyewitness testimony of the intent and the crime of genocide against the Armenians. After a long and painstaking effort, the authors, one an Armenian, the other a Turk, generally recognized as the foremost experts on the Armenian Genocide, have prepared a new, authoritative translation and detailed analysis of the Takvim-i Vekayi, the official Ottoman Government record of the Turkish Military Tribunals concerning the crimes committed against the Armenians during World War I. The authors have compiled the documentation of the trial proceedings for the first time in English and situated them within their historical and legal context. These documents show that Wartime Cabinet ministers, Young Turk party leaders, and a number of others inculpated in these crimes were court-martialed by the Turkish Military Tribunals in the years immediately following World War I. Most were found guilty and received sentences ranging from prison with hard labor to death. In remarkable contrast to Nuremberg, the Turkish Military Tribunals were conducted solely on the basis of existing Ottoman domestic penal codes. This substitution of a national for an international criminal court stands in history as a unique initiative of national self-condemnation. This compilation is significantly enhanced by an extensive analysis of the historical background, political nature and legal implications of the criminal prosecution of the twentieth century's first state-sponsored crime of genocide. Vahakn N. Dadrian was director of a large Genocide Study Project with sustained support by the National Science Foundation and the H. F. Guggenheim Foundation. The project's first major achievement was the publication of an extensive volume, The History of the Armenian Genocide: Ethnic Conflict from the Balkans to Anatolia to the Caucasus (Berghahn Books 1995), now in its 8th edition, which has been translated into Arabic, French, Greek, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. In 2005, he received four separate awards for his lifetime contribution to genocide studies. He taught at the State University of New York (SUNY) system (1970-1991) and has been Director of Genocide Research at the Zoryan Institute since 1999. Taner Akcam was born in the province of Ardahan in the northeast of Turkey. As the editor-in-of a political journal, he was arrested in 1976 and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. One year later, he escaped and fled to Germany as a political refugee. He is the first Turkish scholar to have drawn attention to the historicity of the Armenian Genocide and has been persecuted by the Turkish state for it. In April 2006, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts presented him with a distinguished award for his outstanding work in human rights and fighting genocide denial. Currently, he is Associate Professor of History and the Kaloosdian/Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Clark University‎
