Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [viii], 351, [9] p., b/w and color ills. The Ottoman palace women (Women in Turkey).= Osmanli saray kadinlari (Türkiye'de kadin). Ottoman palace women is the third volume of study entitled Women in Turkey, and is a detailed and documentational account of how women of many races, faiths and creeds entered palace service, and of their lifestyles from the humblest to those who attained the coveted position of favourite of wife to the sultan. It was impossible for anyone but the members of the sultan's own household to see and describe the harem of the Ottoman palace. That is why, with rare exceptions, the portrayals of palace officials, female slaves, odalisques, favourites, wives and sultan mothers by foreign artists who visited Istanbul at various times are mere figments of the imagination and as such are interesting testimony to the power of imagination and artistic ability of European painters...".

The work of the Ottoman privateers who then held sway over most of the Mediterranean, these charts cover a geographical area far beyond the bounds of the Ottoman Empire. as rulers of an expanding empire, the Ottoman sultans took a close interest in mapmaking and may well have commissioned their sea captains to draw the charts. When Piri Reis presented his first world map to Sultan Selim I, conqueror of Egypt, in 1517, the sultan is said to have declared, "How small is the world for a conqueror.".

MIRZA REZA KHAN DANISH ARFAUDDAWLA, (1846-1937).
[SECRET TREATIES / ANGLO-PERSIAN AGREEMENT OF 1919] Manzûme-yi Sulh ve re'y-i Dânîsh [ve tercümesi]. [i.e. Peace agreement and views of Mirzâ Dânîsh]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Ferid [Kam].
Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia. (Source: Encyclopedia Iranica). Original wrappers. Slightly chipped on extremities and occasionally foxing on cover. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Bilingual in Persian and Ottoman script. [34] p., 7-18 pp. text in Persian, 19-34 pp. translation to Ottoman Turkish, a portrait of Prince Mirza Riza Han with a printed signature and inscription, and facsimile litho page of his manuscript poem in his calligraphy. Turkish chapter is in nashkh, Persian chapter is in taliq script. Lithography. Not in OCLC.; Özege 25155.; TBTK 8061. First Edition. Extremely rare.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) An extremely rare litho propaganda map published as an extra supplement to the Tercümân-i Hakîkat [i.e. The Translator of Truth] newspaper just before the proclamation of Republic in Turkey in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), showing the front in West Anatolia during the War of Independence (or National Struggle) between 1919-1922 against Greek forces. The upside of the map between the note as title 'Gift to the readers of 'Tercümân-i Hakîkat', Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's portrait among decorated heroic lithographed drawings. In the lower right corner, can be seen legends of the map, scale, and mapmaker's signature. Tercümân-i Hakîkat was a daily newspaper published in Istanbul between 1878-1921 during the Ottoman Empire. Tercüman-i Hakîkat, the most important newspaper published during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was founded by novelist Ahmed Midhat Efendi, (1844-1912). In the beginning, most of the articles were written by Ahmed Midhat Efendi. It was an encyclopedic newspaper with the aim of inculcating and educating reading habits among the Turks and it played an important role in the training of many famous Ottoman journalists. Its first issue was published on June 26, 1878. After Ahmed Midhat's death in 1913, the newspaper changed owners, and the last issue was published on February 11, 1921. Ibrahim Alaettin Gövsa, (1889-1949), was an Ottoman / Turkish journalist, educator, and intellectual who supported the War of Independence the most. This propaganda map published in Tercümân-i Hakîkat, during the war in 1920 or 1921, is a propaganda tool that calls on the literate people belonging to a certain class, especially those living in Istanbul, to support the war, and aims to spread the word that Turkey is winning the war. Original lithograph map. 50x35,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). Scale: 1: 250.000. Occasionally foxing and slight stains on paper, folded traces. Otherwise a very good copy.

An 8200 year old map: The town plan of Çatalhöyük.= 8200 yillik bir harita: Çatalhöyük sehir plani.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 80 p., color and b/w ills. An 8200 year old map: The town plan of Çatalhöyük.= 8200 yillik bir harita: Çatalhöyük sehir plani. I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. Even though my continuing research would be delayed, I could not avoid giving priority to the study of the Catalhoyuk map. ANDREAS KOPASSIS EFFENDY [ANDRE E. KOPASSIS], (1856-1912).
[COLUMBUS BECOMES POPULAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST] Tarih-i keshf ü feth-i Amerika = Histoire de la decouverte et de le conquête de l'Amerique. [i.e. History of the discovery and conquest of America]. Introduction by [Kemalpasazâde] Said [Bey], (1848-1921). 2 volumes set in one.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) A fine half leather bdg. with marbled boards. Two volumes in one. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). The text in Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters) with bilingual titles in Ottoman Turkish and French on frontispieces and title pages. 2 volumes set: (248 p.; 270, [1] p., the first volume has Columbus' engraved portrait frontispiece, the second has Amerigo Vespucci's portrait). Hegira: 1310 = Gregorian: 1893. First and only edition of this very rare book, which is the first Turkish original work on the history of the discovery of America printed for the Quadricentennial of the Discovery. With this book, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci quickly became popular among Ottoman readers (soon after Iranian readers with a translation of the first volume only), and immediately among other Middle Eastern readers, and thus the first comprehensive and original text describing Colombus and the discovery of America appeared in the Middle East and Islamic world. It's been published in Istanbul under the title "The history of the discovery and conquest of America". The first volume is on Christopher Columbus, and the second volume is on Amerigo Vespucci, their lives and travels. Andreas Kopassis Efendy (1856-1912) was one of the few Ottoman Greeks proficient in the Ottoman literary language. Cretan Kopassis is an intriguing figure who made a remarkable career serving the Ottoman state. At the time of the publication, he was a member of the State Council (Sura-yi Devlet). He displayed quite an extraordinary interest in scholarly research and he seems to have been one of the first to have studied Ottoman "tahrir defterleri" [i.e. Ottoman tax registers]. This could be called a translation in a sense. Kopassis makes no reference to preceding translations, nor does he refer to Robertson's history of America. His main source was a more recent equally "classic" work on Christopher Columbus, Washington Irving's "History of the life and voyages of Christopher Columbus" (first published in 1828). Another source referred to by Kopassis is J. H. Campe's "Entdeckung von Amerika" (first published in 1781). His educational background is evident particularly in the introductory chapter where ample references are made to Pliny, Ptolemy, and Plato's Timaios which contain allusions to Atlantis. In his takri (Introduction) to this work, Kemalpasazade Said Bey (1848-1921) praised the author for his elegant prose. Sultan Abdülhamid awarded the order of merit (liyâkât) in gold to the author. In the same year (1315=1895), an aide-de-camp at the Iranian Ministry of War, Muhibb-i 'Âli Khan, translated the first volume into Persian. At the turn of the century, Christopher Columbus had become a very popular figure for Ottoman readers of all ages...". (Source: STRAUS, JOHANN: Nineteenth-century Ottoman Americana.; "Frontiers of the Ottoman Imagination: Studies in Honour of Rhoads Murphey."). Only one copy in OCLC 777274675 (Leiden University Library). Not in American libraries.; Özege 19857.
