Abdurrahman Effendy's voyage to Brazil. "Two Ottoman warships bearing the names Bursa and Izmir left Istanbul en route to their new duty station in the Persian Gulf. The date was 12 September 1865. The ships passed through the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean planning to follow the African shoreline to Basra at the head of the Persian Gulf. Such a voyage would normally take months even without problems. This voyage however met with unexpected events. After an eventful journey through the Mediterranean the ships reached Spain on 30 October and had to spend six months waiting at Cadiz. But the real adventure was waiting for them in the Atlantic. The ships departed Cadiz on 20 April visited the Canary Islands and reached the Cape Verde Islands on 14 May. After a two-day break the ships set sail once more but on 19 May they encountered a storm that threw them off course. Henceforth the ships' course would be determined by the storms and the ocean waves. This 17-day voyage of uncertainty ultimately brought them to the shores of Brazil where they laid anchor at the port of Rio de Janeiro. The Bursa and Izmir corvettes had to stay in Rio for two months. After then they set sail on the ocean once again and visited many ports including the Cape of Good Hope and Bombay before finally reaching Basra on 14 November 1866. In this way their 13-month journey or more appropriately their adventure came to an end. For the ships' crew members the voyage was filled with hardships and fear. Fortunately for us two of the crew of the Bursa wrote about the journey and left these accounts for us. They were ship engineer Faik Bey and Imam Abdurrahman Efendi who remained in Brazil for a while before returning to Istanbul. The travel log that Abdurrahman Efendi wrote in Arabic after he came back to Istanbul from Brazil was translated into Ottoman Turkish by Antepli Mehmed Serif Efendi and published in 1288/1871. In this work the transit to Brazil is mentioned briefly. The writer's main focus was not on the voyage but rather on the situation of the Moslems in Brazil and the work he took on there. In his travel book Faik Bey says on Abdurrahman Efendi's situation: "Bagdatli Abdurrahman Efendi our ship' imam was persuaded with money by the Moslem negro populace living in Brazil and he absconded. The language of the negro prisoners the Portuguese kidnapped from Africa and brought here confirmed with the language of the American negroes. And since those who came from Africa were from Sudan they had some degree of familiarity with Islam. They knew the Ihl�s and F�tih� suras and prayed five times a day. In the course of time they won over the American negroes and converted them to Islam as well. Now there are 9000 negro Moslems in Brazil. When we reached the port of Rio de Janeiro some of the Moslems came and met with our imam. Subsequently they came each day to learn about various religious matters from the imam. The didn't even have one Kur'an and would give the sailors 3-4 lira for a small section of the Kur'an called 'c�z'. Since the imam was familiar with their language they were quite pleased and accommodating. Every few days they would invite him to a house on the outskirts of the city take him there and bring him back . Imam Abdurrahman Efendi is originally from Baghdad. S�kr� Ali �gel was born in 1886 and In 1909 he graduated from the Military Academy as a lieutenant. He was commandant of the 25th Division of the Ottoman Army in 1915. He served on the Western Front Staff Committee in the Turkish War of Independence. On December 25 1926 he was appointed as the National Police Service Director where he participated in the foundation studies. "The history of Turkish military aviation dates back to 1909 when French aviators were invited to Istanbul to perform demonstrations and the Ottoman High Command began with studies in this field. On December 2 the same year Turkish skies welcomed the first ever aircraft when upon the invitation of the Minister of War Mahmut Sevket Pasha a Belgian pilot named Baron de Catters came to Istanbul and performed an exhibition flight with his Voisin biplane. At the end of 1910 a decision was made by the Ottoman High Command to send officers to Europe to be trained as pilots; however due to the financial difficulties faced the Empire at that time this plan had to be postponed. Only a handful of Turkish students residing in Paris attended flight schools and obtained their certificates there. Mahmut Sevket Pasha could anticipate the importance of military aviation . When the Ottoman Empire entered the World War it had only seven planes and ten pilots available. As soon as the Empire found itself in war the Russians launched an offensive in the Caucasus front and the Third Army stationed there requested aircraft that would fly reconnaissance flights. Two Bleriot planes named Edremit and Tarik bin Ziyad to be flown by Fesa Bey and Salim Bey were loaded on a transport ship which was eventually sunk by Russians. The aircraft were lost and the pilots were taken prisoner ending up in prisoner camps in Siberia. Responding to a request from the Ottoman High Command a number of German pilots visited the Ottoman Air Force in 1915 and Turkish officers began to be sent to Germany for flight training. At the same time Cpt. Erich Serno from the German Air Force was given the task of reforming the Turkish military aviation. He came with 12 planes pilots technicians and he was appointed as the director of the Flight School. In those early years of the war there were serious problems with regard to the transportation of the planes from Germany to Turkey. Germany was in war with Serbia whereas Bulgaria and Romania remained neutral which meant that the land routes were blocked. For this reason aircraft were taken to Southern Hungary by train and then flown to Turkey. It was only after Serbia was defeated and Bulgaria entered the war on the side of the Central Powers that these logistics problems were solved. It is not known when Kadiz�de Mehmed �rif Efendi was born in Erzurum. It is also known for its "Ispir�" and "Erzurum�" monikers. Kadiz�de who received his basic education in Ispir completed the madrasah in Erzurum and received a consent. Kadiz�de who returned to Erzurum after receiving his second conscience in Istanbul was appointed as a professor at Sultaniye Madrasah. While he was working as a professor he also worked as a mufti of Erzurum. Since he was a mufti in Erzurum for 15 years he started to be mentioned with his nickname 'El-Muft�'. Kadiz�de who was a classical Ottoman scholar and promoted his works in Arabic; he wrote many treatises in the fields of qalam fiqh hadith tafsir Arabic language and sufism. This book sheds light on the history of Istanbul Technical University an institution that still functions in modern-day Turkey. Originally written by Kolagasi Mehmed Esad a tutor at the Institute of Warfare the book was first published in 1896. The school was first founded in 1795 under the name Mir'at-i Muhendishane-i Berr�-i H�m�y�n with the aim of teaching sciences and applying this knowledge in military affairs. It took the following names in subsequent years: in 1909 it was called School of Engineering in 1928 Institute of High Engineering in 1941 School of High Engineering and in 1944 Istanbul Technical University. The introduction talks about the aims of the school explaining why there was a need for a school of engineering in the Ottoman Empire and what conditions were needed to establish one. The curriculum the provenance of the teachers what they taught how the students were recruited and the subjects covered are amongst the topics that are explained in detail. The Book of Regulations Nizamname is included which elaborates on the rules surrounding education. There is also detailed information on all the courses. At the end of the book there is a list of all the teachers as well as some biographical information on the high-level military personnel who taught at the school. There is also some brief information on the foreign tutors that worked at the school in 1849 and the tutors that passed away. The book outlines how the courses were marked and include a list of 'regulations' that were used to control the behavior of the students at the school. While the book includes a glossary which helps with the Ottoman vocabulary this is still a difficult read for people who are not well acquainted with the Ottoman language. In Ottoman script. 176 1 p. Ibrahim Edhem Pasha was an Ottoman statesman who held the office of Grand Vizier at the beginning of Abdul Hamid II's reign between 5 February 1877 and 11 January 1878. He resigned from that post after the Ottoman chances on winning the Russo-Turkish War 1877-1878 had decreased. He furthermore served numerous administrative positions in the Ottoman Empire including minister of foreign affairs in 1856 then ambassador to Berlin in 1876 and to Vienna from 1879 to 1882. He also served as a military engineer and as Minister of Interior from 1883 to 1885. In 1876-1877 he represented the Ottoman Government at the Constantinople Conference. He was born in Chios of Greek ancestry in a Christian Greek Orthodox village on the island of Chios. Strangely his connection to Chios is not well-documented: his son Osman Hamdi Bey claimed that he was a member of the Skaramanga family but Edhem Pasha himself tried to efface his Greek connections. As a young boy in 1822 he was orphaned and captured by Ottoman soldiers during the massacre of the Greek population of Chios. He was sold into slavery brought to Constantinople and adopted by the later grand vizier H�srev Pasha. Lacking his own children and family H�srev Pasha raised about ten children who had been orphaned or bought as slaves many of whom ascended to important positions. The child now named Ibrahim Edhem quickly distinguished himself with his intelligence and after having attended schools in the Ottoman Empire he was dispatched along with a number of his peers and under the supervision of his father then grand vizier and of the sultan Mahmud II himself to Paris to pursue his studies under state scholarship. There he returned a Bachelor of Arts and was one of the top pupils at the �cole des Mines. He was a classmate and a friend of Louis Pasteur. He thus became Turkey's first mining engineer in the modern sense and he started his career in this field. Edhem Pasha was the father of Osman Hamdi Bey a well-known archaeologist and painter as well as the founder of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Another son Halil Edhem Eldem took up the archaeology museum after Osman Hamdi Bey's death and has been a deputy for ten years under the newly founded Turkish Republic. Yet another son Ismail Galib Bey is considered as the founder of numismatics as a scientific discipline in Turkey. Later generations of the family also produced illustrious names. The architect Sedat Hakki Eldem a cousin is one of the pillars of the search for modern architectural styles adopted by the Republic of Turkey called the Republican style in the Turkish context in its early years and which marks many important buildings dating from the period of the 1920s and the 1930s. Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha was an Ottoman industrialist and statesman who was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire twice under Mahmud II reign 1808-1839 and three times under Abd�lmecit I reign 1839-1861 during the Tanzimat period of reformation. He was one of the most prominent figures in funding the Crimean War. According to Shaw and Shaw Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha and his predecessor Mustafa Resit Pasha "acted mainly as mediators" for Mahmud II "attempting to balance conflicting interests while participating in the factional activities and disputes endemic in Ottoman governmental life.". Buyuruldu or Buyrultu Buyurildi Buyurdu etc. is the order of an Ottoman grand vizier vizier beglerbegi defterd�r or other high officials to a subordinate. The term is derived from the word 'buyuruldi' it has been ordered in which the order usually ends and which gradually developed into a conventional sign. Buyuruldus are of two main types: a decisions written in the margin der ken�r of an incoming petition or report often ordering that a ferm�n firman or ber�t etc. be issued to a certain effect. Brill Encyclopedia of Islam. "Menzils" were early post organizations in the Ottoman Empire before the Reform period. In the Ottoman Empire every 35 kilometers - the distance one could travel in a day - on the main roads there were buildings called "menzil" or "menzilhane" destination post station. Surrounded by walls these yards had a hostelry barn market bath and restaurant. Hosted at the complex for free travelers shopped took baths and fed their animals and continued their journeys the following day. At the complex officials - registered and paid by the state - served the guests. Within time menzils turned into bazaars where locals sold their products. Then villages and towns started to pop up around them. Commodities needed by the army for expeditions were preserved at menzils and soldiers were accommodated at these facilities if needed during expeditions. Mailmen operating between two faraway destinations changed their horses with those waiting at menzils and went on their route without losing time. Source: Ekrem Bugra Ekinci. It's written on paper with 'ahar'. Used black ink only. It includes approx. 63 lines on front and verso of the paper and two buyuruldus. Different calligraphic "riq'a" styles by different bureaucrats and Grand Vizier and owner of a petition Bende Osman. Grand vizier's handwriting is in 'diwan�' script. Dated I.III.1954. 21x17 cm. In Turkish. 1 p. "Hayat" i.e. Life magazine letterhead. Vedat Nedim T�r was born in the city of Istanbul in 1897. He was the son of Ahmet Nedim Servet T�r. He attended Galatasaray High School and completed his higher education at the University of Berlin. Having taken his Ph.D. in economics he returned to Turkey. He served as the director at the Ankara State Radio and Directorate General of Press and Information. His writings were published in the newspapers Cumhuriyet and Vatan. Vedat Nedim among the founders of Istanbul and Ankara State Radios also served as a culture and art consultant for Yapii Kredi Bank and Akbank. Among the stage plays he scripted were Issizler 1924 K�r 1935 Degisen Adam 1941 Hep ve Hi� 1951 and Halici Kiz 1975. Many of his theatre scripts were staged by several theater companies. Further his play Halici Kiz was adapted to the silver screen by Muhsin Ertugrul in 1953. Mahmud Naci Bey was a Turkish politician soldier deputy of the Ottoman Parliament Assembly Tripoli 17 December 1908 founder of Besiktas Gymnastics Club 1903. Mahmut Naci Bey who was one of the founders of the Ottoman Besiktas Terbiye-i Bedeniye School also became a member of the Ottoman Deputy Council and served as the Deputy of Tripoli. He wrote a book titled "Trablusgarp - Hedefteki �lke Libya'nin Tarihi" i.e. "Tripoli - The History of the Destination Country Libya" which also wrote the situation in Libya with his memories here. Mahmut Naci Bey who was of Caucasian origin was against the policy of Sultan Abd�lhamid II. He joined Mustafa Kemal Pasha during his occupation years. He took part in the National Struggle in secret weapon shipments from Anatolia to Istanbul. Cover has a long title contains the name of the book and a notification on further two books will be published titled 'Abidin Pasha in Ankara' and 'Abidin Pasha in Adana'. Book started with an introduction by Vakkas Ali El-Buv�k�. Any biographical information could not be found about El-Buv�k�. Tractate includes thoughts of Abidin Pasha about the last Ottoman Imperial problems degeneration in Turkish bureaucracy international Balkan question etc. Abidin Pasha was an Albanian patriot politician ideologue and diplomat; and the governor of Rhodes Aden Algeria Ankara and Adana. As a rilindas involved in the Albanian National Awakening he was one of the founders of the League of Prizren and its chief representative for Epirus 1878. Dino was one of the main promoters in the need for the creation of the Autonomous Albanian Vilayet under the Ottoman suzerainty and later a contributor in the Albanian independence. Abedin Dino was from Chameria and he was born in Preveza on March 23 1843 to one of the most notable and noble families of the city the Dino family. During the Great Eastern Crisis Dino was one of ten signatories to a memorandum addressed to Berlin Congress hosts chancellor Bismarck and Count Andrassy on 20 June 1878 calling for reforms and Albanians to remain in the Ottoman state with their rights desires interests and traditions being respected. Dino strongly supported the territorial integrity of Albanian inhabited lands remaining within the Ottoman state. Together with Abdul Frash�ri Vesel Dino and Mehmet Ali Vrioni he established local League branches of the Albanian Committee of Janina and Assembly of Preveza. On 11 January 1879 a meeting in Preveza of Albanian notables and leaders at Dino's house agreed to oppose Epirus joining Greece even though military force if an unsatisfactory agreement was imposed by the Great Powers and to express that view to the Berlin Congress. The free movement of Dino in Preveza and his appointment as a commissioner for delineating the border was representative of the support the Ottoman Empire gave to the League during this time. From 10 June - 12 September 1880 Dino briefly served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ottoman Empire for four months and was elevated to the rank of Pasha becoming known as Abedin Pasha. Abdul Hamid II appointed Dino as he wanted to strengthen the Ottoman position during negotiations about the border with Greece. . In part due to his efforts and activities the Vilayet of Janina did not join Greece and remained within the Ottoman Empire until 1912. He became a w�li governor of Aden and from 1904 Vizier minister in the Ottoman government headed by fellow Albanian Avlonyali Mehmed Ferid Pasha. Abedin Bej Dino was also an evaluated poet publisher writer and translator. He wrote many songs including the famous one "K�ng� p�r Shqip�rin" alb. "Song for Albania" in 1879 "T� nxiturit e Shqip�ris� duke p�rpjetur�" 1880 "Poema e Shenjt�" Poema of Saint 1884 "Poetry" 1888. He translated on Albanian language poems of a 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi. His son Rasih Abidinpasaz�de Dino who has a book titled '�� Mektup' was a co-founder of the first Albanian school in the city of Preveza and in 1913 he was the head of the delegation of Albania that signed the Treaty of London that recognized Albania an independent state. AH: 1326 = AD: 1910. With its elqab letter has 10 lines. A legible script in Turkish with Arabic letters. Letter warns interlocutors against Bulgarian atrocities. Hayrullah Bey was a statesman who held various positions in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. He was born in 1859 in the rooted Pirizade family in Istanbul. His father was the head of the State Department of Shura and Shaykh al-Islam Piriz�de Mehmed Sahip Molla 1838-1910 and his mother was Hekimbasizade Fahr�nisa Hanim. There are also two sheikh al-islams among their great grandfathers. Ibrahim Hayrullah Bey a member of the Committee of Union and Progress rapidly rose to state administration after the declaration of the 2nd Constitutional Monarchy. Original b/w photograph showing Fahreddin Pasha in Medina city with Ottoman soldiers and Arabian notables by congratulating each other's bairam. His injured left leg is cast into plaster. 9x14 cm. Fakhri Pasha or Fahreddin Pasha known as �mer Fahrettin T�rkkan after the Surname Law of 1934 was a Turkish career officer who was the commander of the Ottoman Army and governor of Medina from 1916 to 1919. He was nicknamed "The Lion of the Desert" and "The Tiger of the Desert" by the British and Arabs for his patriotism in Medina and is known for defending Medina in the Siege of Medina during World War I. In 1914 before the Ottoman Army was mobilized Staff Colonel Fahreddin Bey was appointed the commander of the XII Corps stationed in Mosul. He was promoted to the rank of Mirliva on 12 November 1914 and appointed to the Deputy Commander of the Fourth Army stationed in Aleppo. During World War I after Hussein bin Ali Sharif of Mecca started preparing for a revolt against the Ottoman Empire Fahreddin upon the orders of Djemal Pasha on 23 May 1916 moved toward Medina in Hejaz to defend it; he was appointed the commander of the Hejaz Expeditionary Force on 17 July 1916. Medina was besieged by the Arab forces who revolted against the Ottoman Sultan and sided with the British against Fahreddin Pasha but he stood his ground and defended the city. He also protected the single-track narrow-gauge Hejaz Railway from sabotage by the Hejazi army Turkish garrisons of the isolated small train stations withstood the continuous night attacks and secured the tracks against the increasing number of attacks around 130 major attacks in 1917 and hundreds in 1918 including more than 300 bombs on April 30 1918. With the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire from the war with the Armistice of Mudros between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies of World War I on 30 October 1918 it was expected that Fahreddin would also surrender. But he refused to do so and rejected the armistice. During the siege of Medina Fahreddin sent the sacred artifacts and manuscripts of Medina to Istanbul in order to protect them from seizure. Most of the manuscripts were returned to Medina by the Ottoman Empire and are now in libraries in the city while the rest remain in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. <br/> <br/> N. p., [ca. 1916] unknown
