Ziya Pasha, pseudonymous of Abdul Hamid Ziyaeddin was an Ottoman writer and translator. He was, along with Ibrahim Sinasi and Namik Kemal, one of the most important authors of the Tanzimat period. He held several offices in the Ottoman State. From 1865 he was a leading member of the Young Ottomans. In 1867 he went together with Namik Kemal to Paris and London, where he published a newspaper called Hürriyet (freedom). His return to the Ottoman Empire was followed by tenures as governor of Cyprus, Amasya, Konya, Aleppo and last Adana. This study is on his own ideas related to the Ottoman Empire system, rule, and Westernization period. First and only edition.

This book attempts to illuminate a lesser known aspect of this subject, in particular, the general voluntary relief efforts on the part of the British people for the Ottoman refugees (the '93 Refugees). This book covers the activities of both the institutions and the prominent figures of this endeavor, against the background of humanitarian diplomacy. In doing so, it provides the reader with an intimate look into a "compassionate" episode in late 19th century Anglo-Ottoman history.

Along with antisemitism are the conspiracy theories in which the "Jew" or the "Zionist" feature as the main actors that are widely seen throughout Turkish society. In fact, this state of affairs is not only pervasive but has even become "normal" to the point of banality, so much so that it tends to draw no reaction from either the country's intellectuals or politicians. This book contains a collection of author's published articles on the subject-a subject that has received no serious treatment in Turkey, and as such attempts to fill the gaping hole in our knowledge of this widespread yet rarely discussed phenomenon and, as such, stands as an indispensible source for those interested in Turkey and antisemitism.

Negotiating the terms of mercy: Petitions and pardon cases in the Hamidian Era.

This study focuses on the pardons of the Hamidian era by using the petitions which were written by the convicts, accused people or their relatives to the Sublime Porte. Beside the lives, prison conditions and accusations of the convicts, the pardon petitions constitute a useful source to see the nature of the relationship between state and the ordinary people. This study argues that although requesting a pardon seems to have been a kind of obedience to the authority, the relationship established on pardons was established through bargains and negotiations. The process of granting pardons was an interactive one in which the actors negotiated on the conditions according to the position of supplicant. Also, the petitions allow us to see the debated characteristics of the Hamidian era from the eyes of the ordinary people. This study claims that the pardon was a state policy and it was especially applied during the Armenian Events of the 1890s, the banditry problem and tribal conflicts. Moreover, to gain the loyalties of the outlaws, to use them as informers and collaborate with them in the critical areas of the Empire, pardons were a step in allowing the state to make alliances without losing its prestige. Through the discretionary power of forgiveness, the Sultan tried to restore the monarchical ideology, namely the merciful image of Sultanic rule, which was a distinctive element of monarchical power. While granting pardons, the Abdülhamid regime expected from the convict less loyalty or regret than certain services, and active collaboration on particular issues - a tension which constituted the dynamics of the pardon negotiations.

Extremely rare. was an eminent Ottoman Turkish poet. He mastered Arabic, Persian, and French languages and worked as a civil servant during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. He contributed to the literary magazine Servet-i-Fünun ("the Wealth of Knowledge") until it was censored by the Ottoman government in 1901. Süleyman Nazif was born in 1870 in Diyarbakir to Sait Pasha, a poet and historian. He was the brother of renowned Turkish poet and politician Faik Ali Ozansoy. He started his education in his very early years in Maras. Later, he was schooled in Diyarbakir. In 1879, he joined his father again in Maras, took private lessons from his father and in French language from an Armenian priest. Following the death of his father in 1892, Süleyman Nazif worked at several posts in the Governorate of Diyarbakir. In 1896, he was promoted and worked a while in Mosul. After moving to Constantinople, he started to write articles against Sultan Abdul Hamid II sympathizing with the ideas and aims of the Young Ottomans. He fled to Paris, France, where he stayed eight months continuing to write opposing articles in the newspapers. When he returned home, he was forced to work at a secretary post in the Governorate of Bursa between 1897 and 1908. In 1908, Süleyman Nazif moved to Constantinople again, joined the Committee of Union and Progress and started journalism. He co-founded also a newspaper, Tasvir-i Efkar, together with the renowned journalist Ebüzziya Tevfik. Although this newspaper had to close soon, his articles made him a well-known writer. After Sultan Abdülhamid II restored the constitutional monarchy following the 1908 Young Turk Revolution, Süleyman Nazif served as governor of Ottoman provinces Basra (1909), Kastamonu (1910), Trabzon (1911), Mosul (1913) and Baghdad (1914). However, since he was not very successful in administrative posts, he decided in 1915 to leave public service and return to his initial profession as a writer. This is fourth book of Nazif.
