The most Important of these are the colourful and skillfully-crafted "Haleplibahçe Mosaics". These are the first examples in the world of mosaics depicting Amazon warrior queens. This image, the technical and artistic elements of mosaics, and the fact that they were crafted using 4mm2 stones from the river Euphrates, have made them one of the world's most treasured mosaics.‎

‎HASAN RÂMI [PASHA], (1842-1923).‎

‎Hâtirât.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 119, [1] p., 1 b/w plate. Hasan Rami Pasha was an Ottoman career officer, admiral, and naval minister, who participated in the Greco-Turkish War (1897). He was born in Selanik (Thessaloniki, now in Greece) to an Albanian family in 1842. In 1856, after graduating from the naval academy he was appointed as a navy officer. During the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) he was a commander of a warship. In 1882, he was appointed as the commander of the navy. Three years later, he became the adjutant of sultan Abdul Hamid II, a prestigious but inactive post. In 1897, at the eve of the Greco-Turkish War (1897), he was tasked with defending the Dardanelles. In 1906, he was appointed as the naval minister. Two years later, however, following the Young Turk Revolution he was dismissed by the now powerful Committee of Union and Progress partisans. He was put on trial and was downgraded. He spent his last years in Istanbul and died in 1923. Abdülaziz, the sultan before 1876, tried to form a powerful navy. In the mid 19th century, the Ottoman Navy was one of the most powerful navies in the world. But Abdul Hamid II never allowed any naval activity. After the Russo-Turkish War, for about 20 years, the navy had no training, maneuver, or maintenance. All warships stayed in the Golden Horn without the slightest training. According to one view, Abdülhamit was afraid of navy officers' possible coup. But before the war against Greece, Abdülhamit decided to send the navy to Dardanelles Strait as a precaution against a possible Greek naval offensive. (Greek navy was smaller but more up-to-date and superior than that of the Ottoman Empire [4]). Hasan Rami who was the commander of this navy soon found out that almost all ships and most of the weapons needed major repairs. Although Hasan Rami Pasha was able to sail up to the Dardanelles with difficulty, he saw that the navy was almost out of commission. He prepared a report and suggested to purchase new warships instead of repairing the old ships. He further pointed out that the former reports to the sultan about the navy were false. Rauf Bey (future prime minister and one of the leaders in the early days of the Turkish War of Independence) was one of the subordinates of Hasan Rami Pasha. According to his memoirs, his expectations were high in Hasan Pasha's reform projects. But he was disappointed when Hasan Pasha was appointed as the naval minister. Because unlike his former self, Hasan Pasha became a passive politician and did nothing to reform the navy. After the Young Turk Revolution, he was accused of the miserable condition of the navy. Hasan Rami Pasha published his memoirs to be acquitted in 1908. First Edition. Özege 7028. OCLC 27352288 / 251440056.‎

‎Bes büyük Osmanli darbesinin hikayesi: Duraklama, gerileme ve yikilis dönemleri.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish.

Controlling substantial territories in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa for several centuries, the Ottoman Empire constituted animportant place in the history of many Christian communities and theirChurches. Some fundamental transformations in these Churches and theirconnections with the outside world can be better understood when the inner-workings of the Empire are also taken into account. Likewise, due attention tothe inner dynamics of the Christian communities in its territories can make possible a more realistic perception of the Ottoman Empire. Overall, the studyof the Churches in the Ottoman Empire offers a clearer insight into theinteraction between state and religion as a whole. It publishes monographs, edited volumes, and critical editions of primarysources. The series welcomes contributions beyond the confines of grandtheories such as dhimmitude and the millet system, and of traditional binariessuch as toleration and persecution. It has a cross-disciplinary perspectiveinvolving the fields of Ottoman history, Middle Eastern studies, Balkanstudies, African studies, religious studies, church history, missiology, thehistory of interactions, connected history, and diaspora studies. ‎The Orthodox church in the Early Modern Middle East: Relations between the Ottoman central admnistration and the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p., ills. The Orthodox church in the Early Modern Middle East: Relations between the Ottoman central admnistration and the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria. The study of the history of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire has long been shaped by the model suggested by the proponents of millet system. In this model, the role attributed to the Eastern Patriarchates (Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria) is one of submission to the demands of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Greek Orthodox lay elites called Phanariots. Hasan Çolak challenges this view by shifting his focus from the Patriarchate of Constantinople to the very relations between the Ottoman central administration and the Eastern Patriarchates. Introducing the concept of ?patriarchal elites" which was formed in parallel to the Phanariot ?lay elites" against the infiltration of Catholicism, the author explains the centralisation of the Eastern Patriarchates at a time often referred to as an age of political decentralisation. Beginning to establish closer ties with the Ottoman central administration and the Greek Orthodox of Istanbul in the 18th century, the Eastern Patriarchs began to cooperate more with the Ottoman central administration than their partners during the initial periods of the Ottoman rule in the Middle East, namely foreign courts and semi-autonomous provincial rulers. The book is based on rigorous research on unpublished and unexplored Ottoman correspondence between the Ottoman central administration and the Eastern Patriarchates, published Greek patriarchal documents, and French missionary and diplomatic sources.‎

‎HAVVA ISKAN, ERKAN DÜNDAR.‎

‎From Lukka to Lycia: The land of Sarpedon and St. Nicholas.= Lukka'dan Lykia'ya: Sarpedon ve Aziz Nikolaos'un ülkesi.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 604 p., color and b/w ills. From Lukka to Lycia: The land of Sarpedon and St. Nicholas.= Luka'dan Lykia'ya: Sarpedon ve Aziz Nikolaos'un ülkesi. The Lycian Civilization is the product of an ancient Anatolian people known as the Lukka. The traces of this people, who spoke a language related to Luwian, have now been dated as far back as the prehistoric period by recent research, which constitutes another important step towards understanding the history of Anatolia. The Lukka people fought with the Hittites against Ramses II in the Battle of Qade¿, while the Lycians became the symbol of the Anatolian peoples when, led by Sarpedon, they came to the aid of the Trojans in the epic poem The Iliad and thus left their mark on history. With its uniquely distinctive culture, Lycia is one of the best known and investigated regions of Anatolia. Roughly coinciding with today¿s Teke Peninsula, this rugged geography isolated Lycia from the surrounding cultural zones, thus allowing it to compile an impressive cultural inventory of its own. The book you are holding in your hands attempts to introduce this extraordinary civilization to the reader through the latest findings and scientific approach by the experts in the field.‎

The Tahtali Dam was constructed in Cuma Plain to provide potable water to Izmir. Before the dam project was completed, archaeological research and excavations have been conducted in the region between the years of 1994 and 2001 for salvaging the cultural property which would submerge because of the dam. Within the scope of the studies, as part of the protocol signed by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, excavations have been performed under the presidency of Izmir Archaeological Museum Director, Dr. Turhan Özkan, and under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Hayat Erkanal, faculty member at Ankara University Department of Archaeology. A tumulus and a pithos grave belonging to LBA uncovered during these studies between 1996 and 1997 are discussed in this publication.‎
