Ristic, Seraphiim & Barac-Decanac , Sava
The suffering of Old Serbia and Macedonia in the 19th century : testimonies of Dec?ani Monastery Abbot Fr. Seraphim Ristic? (1864) and Bishop Sava Barac?-Dec?anac (1882
"The present book is comprised of two different texts, 'The Lament of Old Serbia' by Abbot Seraphim Ristic? of Dec?ani from 1864, and 'The Current unfortunate state of Old Serbia and Macedonia' by Bishop Sava Barac? of Dec?ani from 1882. Along with these two texts is a short letter by Bishop Sava to the 1878 Berlin Congress."These two narratives are "profoundly valuable testimonies of the oppression under which the Serbs of Kososvo, Metohija and Macedonia lived in the last decades of Ottoman rule. Exceedingly rare first edition of this first translation of Stevenson in any Turkish / Turkic language, of 'New Arabian Nights' including the short stories Stevenson's 'The Suicide Club' and 'The Rajah's Diamond'. Translated by Salime Servet Seyfi (1868-1944), who was a female author and translator who wrote books during the period of the Constitutional Monarchy (after 1908) and National Struggle for Independence (1919-1922). Having published two books, poetry and a novel, her place among the women author is notable. She among the rare women authors to contribute to war literature. She mainly wrote didactic prose and poems. Her works attract attention for they inspire readers about national conscience. Salime Servet, who wrote mainly during the years of the Balkan Wars (1911-1912), played an active role in Müdafaa-i Milliye Cemiyeti [i.e. National Resistance Community]. Furthermore, she contributed to the literature with her journal of Seyyale [i.e. Fluid]. She translated Stevenson's short stories shortly after the Balkan Wars (1911-1912). She used a gorgeous but simple language in Ottoman Turkish including Persian and Arabic words carefully selected by her in her translation. ROGER A. DEAL.
Crimes of honor, drunken brawls and murder: Violence in Istanbul under Abdülhamid II.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 218 p. "Kabadayis and külhanbeys. Drunken brawls. Muggings and robberies. Although most people may never have been touched by it, common criminal violence was an everyday occurrence in Istanbul in the late 19th century. Much of it derived from specific subcultures, such as the kabadayis and külhanbeys, or various refugee and immigrant communities, each with its own standards of acceptable interpersonal violence. Other violence had its sources in more universal motives, like greed or rage. This was also a time of political and social changes, when the state was expanding its policing activities and society was becoming less and less accepting of acts of violence. Drawing on archival documents, contemporary news coverage, and popular literature, this book provides a rare scholarly overview of the sources and the nature of violence in the Ottoman capital during the reign of Abdülhamid II.".
