Tharaud, Jérôme et Jean.
La Palestine.
Royal quarto. Pp. 159. Plus 8 full-page (helio)gravure plates, each with a caption printed on facing tissue guard. With numerous (helio)gravures of fine quality (many full-page), printed in lightly-tinted ink, to the text. Printed on thick paper throughout. Original card wrappers with integral pictorial dust-jacket, bit chipped and soiled. Book itself is in a very good condition. ~ A numbered copy of the first, limited edition. A magnificent visual tour and a celebration of fine early photography in Palestine. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas' copy, with her bookplate. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague]

The New York Board Of Rabbis
SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR PALESTINE AND THE UNITED NATIONS BY THE NEW YORK BOARD OF RABBIS ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31ST, 1948, AT 11: 00 A.M. AT TEMPLE ANSCHE CHESED
NEW YORK CITY
1st edition. Original single fold wrappers, 12mo, [4] pages. Service includes: National Anthem sung by Cantor Adolph Katchko, Invocation by David de Sola Pool; Greetings by Rabbi Joseph Zeitlin; Prayer for the United Nations by Rabbi J. X. Cohen; [Sermon] by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver; Benediction by Rabbi Abraham M. Heller; and closing with the singing of Hatikvah. On March 25, 1948, 6 days prior to this event, US President Harry Truman made the following statement regarding the upcoming vote on Palestine at the UN: This country vigorously supported the plan for partition with economic union recommended by the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine and by the General Assembly. We have explored every possibility consistent with the basic principles of the Charter for giving effect to that solution. Unfortunately, it has become clear that the partition plan cannot be carried out at this time by peaceful means. We could not undertake to impose this solution on the people of Palestine by the use of American troops, both on Charter grounds and as a matter of national policy. The United Kingdom has announced its firm intention to abandon its mandate in Palestine on May 15. Unless emergency action is taken, there will be no public authority in Palestine on that date capable of preserving law and order. Violence and bloodshed will descend upon the Holy Land. Large-scale fighting among the people of that country will be the inevitable result
. These dangers are imminent. Responsible governments in the United Nations cannot face this prospect without acting promptly to prevent it. The United States has proposed to the Security Council a temporary United Nations trusteeship for Palestine to provide a government to keep the peace. Such trusteeship was proposed only after we had exhausted every effort to find a way to carry out partition by peaceful means. Trusteeship is not proposed as a substitute for the partition plan but as an effort to fill the vacuum soon to be created by the termination of the mandate on May 15. The trusteeship does not prejudice the character of the final political settlement. It would establish the conditions of order which are essential to a peaceful solution.
