DEJANIRAH COUTO, FEZA GÜNERGIN, MARIA PIA PEDANI.
Seapower, technology and trade: Studies in Turkish maritime history.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English. 605 p., b/w ills. The present volume seeks primarily to present a heterogeneous and extensive assessment of the state-of-the art in international maritime history, perceived from various points of view, giving priority to the analysis and interpretation of new archival documentation that was previously unknown, or little explored. The aim of this publication is thus to add, as much as possible, to the general body of knowledge in global maritime history, and to contribute to a substantial reflection on Turkish maritime history. A collection of fifty-seven articles offers various written and iconographic sources, with explanatory texts, both of European and non-European origin, with a natural accent in micro-history studies. The chronological approach that was followed was rather broad, affording some emphasis on the lower medieval period, and the early modern and contemporary era. Complementary studies explore earlier periods where the foundations of seapower, supported by advances in technology and gains in trade, were laid for history in the making.

In the great age of explorationthe quest for the fabled Northwest Passage lured the era's boldest adventurers to the icy Arctic. For nearly four centuries they risked and sometimes lost their lives in search of a sea route connecting Europe with Asia.'Across the Top of the World' tells their story - an epic tale of tragedydetermination and human struggle to best nature in one of history's greatest enterprises.European governments lured by the prospect of a direct path to the riches of the East backed the search for the legendary northern sea route.Beginning in 1547 with the Frobisher partythey launched expedition after expeditionmany of which suffered extreme hardship in the harsh and unforgiving landscape of the frozen North. The Inuitthe native people of the Arctichad lived in isolation until Europeans began to arrive in the 16thCand relations were not always cordial. The Franklin expedition of the 1840s became both the firstparty to see victory within its reach and the passage's greatest tragedy when its voyage ended in madness cannibalism and death with the mysterious loss of Sir John Franklinhis 128-member crew and two ships.Spurred by Franklin's failure further attempts continued until famed Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen succeeded in sailing the dangerous icy maze of the passage in 1903-6. Then in the 1940sthe Royal Canadian Mounted Police schooner St. Roch became the second vessel to conquer the passagethis time twice traversing its lengthand setting the stage for the modern phase of exploration utilizing icebreakers and American nuclear-powered submarines. 'Across the Top of the World' re-creates this spell-binding sagadrawing on quotations from stark firsthand accounts and using 200 dramatic images to bring the cold Arctic world to life. This volume includes paintings and photographs of the intrepid explorers and their ships images of relicslandscapes and seascapesand the most current archaeological and anthropological research.Combined with a beautifully written narrativeit provides a poignant and compelling link with the pastenhanced by author James Delgado's personal experiences as an underwater archaeologisthistorian and modern-day Arctic explorer.
