Incredible 6 page manuscript letter from a Civil War Chaplain posted at Annapolis discussing St. John's College Hospital Chapel visiting hospitals and the work of the U.S. Christian Commission in Annapolis during the war.<br /> <br /> Partial transcript: <br /> "At 2 P.M. I preached in St. Johns College Hospital Chapel & there visited some of the wards. In the evening we had preaching in the U.S.C.C. Chapel Tent which is my headquarters at College Green Barracks.Annapolis is or course a secesh town. The churches were nearly broken up by the war but now begin to look more flourishing. There is a large Episcopal Ch. here pastor of wh. is a Chaplain in hospital & a very nice sort of fellow."<br /> <br /> An unusually descriptive letter from a young man stationed at Annapolis and serving as a chaplain at the College Green Hospital Chapel. Book itself is red gilt stamped cloth b & w frontis of Rev. Haskins 140 pages includes the Programme of Services a history of the parish text of addresses from the celebration extracts from letters sent to the Rector on the occasion & a list of contributors. Also included is a real photo post card of St. Mark's . Corners and spine ends lightly bumped covers lightly scuffed with a few small spots on front cover; invitation is in excellent condition with a small damp stain at very top pages; interior is very nice with just some toning around perimeter of pages no writing or marks the small damp stain mentioned above affects only the title page. London: Hubbard Pub'g Co 1897. Paperback. Good. 12 p.: chromolithographed illustrations; 15 cm. Wrapper title. Inside front wrapper is list of "The Celebrated Set of 12 Palmer Cox Primers." Lacking publication information but consistent with others in this series published by Hubbard in 1897. Contains 5 short tales about animal characters: The Quarrel -- The Wolf's First Party -- The Dissatisfied Owl -- The Squirrel's Visitor -- Meddlesome Pater. Based on 6 illustrations by Palmer Cox best known as the creator of the Brownie books. This was intended for use as a promotional booklet. The back wrapper has an illustration of a knight and jester holding a large broadside with a brownie peeking out from under it. In this case the broadside and the inside of the back wrapper have been filled in with advertising for Atmore & Son purveyor of plum pudding and mincemeat at 110 Tasker St. Philadelpha Pa. English immigrant Frederick B. Atmore was reportedly the first person to do make and sell mincemeat in the United States. After his death his son Robert E. Atmore established Atmore & Sons. In Good Condition: spine starting to separate at ends; opened carelessly with chip out of fore-edge of front wrapper with small loss of illustration and larger loss from fore-edge of 2nd leaf of text without impact on text or illustration; old stain along lower edge of wrapper and final 2 leaves and at lower end of gutter throughout; otherwise clean and bright.
