Stork Byron Claude
RAWHIDE AND HAYWIRE True Tales of the Old West original manuscripts
Spokane: n.p. 1959. Typewritten. Very Good. Soft cover. Manuscript. TWO original carbon copies of the author's published book of the same title. 170 one-sided pages plus 178 one-sided pages. Several additional pages are present one of them being a further note hand-written referencing John & Dr. George T. Pomeroy. One of these two manuscripts has heavy editing with a pen. A superficial comparison suggests that the second manuscript included these corrections and additions. The second manuscript also includes a few more edited notes and also a Foreword by his son. On the first manuscript he notes it is 48000 words long and the second MS is 47000 words long. A thick card 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" contains on both sides the author's handwritten notes about illustrations & where they will go in the book. The author's nickname was "Rawhide Shorty." He was an artist & was referred to as "Spokane's Painter of Western Scenes." In a 1960 True West article he talks about working cattle with Charley Russell. Good condition both manuscripts. BONUS: The buyer will also receive with these manuscripts another set of manuscripts totaling around 100 pages. This set includes most of Stork's 1962 book of stories Told Around the Campfire. It is not complete. About half of them are type script and about half are handwritten by Stork. There is included in these @ 100 pps some other material that is not complete including an original handwritten poem. n.p. Paperback

COLD STORAGE
N.Y.: Soho Crime 2014. 1st ed. A fine copy of the Advance Uncopyedited Edition due out February 2014. 298 pages. Cold Storage Alaska is a remote fishing outpost where salmonberries sparkle in the morning frost and where you just might catch a King Salmon if youre zen enough to wait for it. Settled in 1935 by Norse fishermen who liked to skinny dip in its natural hot springs the town enjoyed prosperity at the height of the frozen fish boom. But now the cold storage plant is all but abandoned and the town is withering. Clive "The Milkman" McCahon returns to his tiny Alaska hometown after a seven-year jail stint for dealing coke. He has a lot to make up to his younger brother Miles who has dutifully been taking care of their ailing mother. But Clive doesnt realize the trouble hes bringing home. His vengeful old business partner is hot on his heels a stick-in-the-mud State Trooper is dying to bust Clive for narcotics and to complicate everything Clive might be going insane-- lately hes been hearing animals talking to him. Will his arrival in Cold Storage be a breath of fresh air for the sleepy depopulated town Or will Clives arrival turn the whole place upside down . First Edition. Pictorial Wrappers. Fine. Advance Uncorrected Proof. Soho Crime Paperback

STROM STEPHEN E.; ALISON HAWTHORNE DEMING & REBECCA A. SENF
Death Valley: Painted Light
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2016. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Death Valley is the lowest driest and hottest area in North America. Located about 150 miles 241 kilometers west of Las Vegas near the border of California and Nevada it straddles an area of about 3000 square miles 770 square kilometers. A land of extremes and contrasts it includes Telescope Peak that towers over the valley at 11049 feet elevation 3367 meters and an oasis that provides habitat for the endangered Devils Hole Pupfish Cyprinodon diabolis. Designated a national monument in 1933 and expanded into a national park in 1994 its rugged yet otherworldly beautiful landscape now attracts more than 1000000 visitors per year. Attracted by the distinctive topography and light of Death Valley Stephen Strom a renowned professor of astrophysics began regularly traveling there some thirty-five years ago. His acute eye for abstract almost pointillist compositions not only reveals the patterns and effects of geologic forces over millennia but it also takes in the vast colorful sweep of land and sky as well as the land's myriad detailsvolcanic cinder cones and sand dunes dry lakes and salt pans colorful badlands and canyons and pine-studded mountainsthat give the area its distinctive and varied character. Strom's photographs are complemented by Alison Hawthorne Deming's original sequence of poems written for this book that are as luminous and detailed as the images themselves. And Rebecca A. Senf's perceptive essay situates Strom's work within the canon of those photographers who have inspired and mentored him including Ansel Adams Harry Callahan Keith McElroy Eliot Porter Frederic Sommer and Max Yavno. Death Valley: Painted Light is a book unlike any other about a landscape whose topographic relief and sheer beauty are unforgettable. Stephen E. Strom received his PhD in astronomy from Harvard University in 1964. He has held appointments at Harvard the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson and the University of Massachusetts. Strom's photographic work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally and is held in several permanent collections including those at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Alison Hawthorne Deming is an author of poetry and nonfiction. She is the Agnese Nelms Haury Chair of Environment and Social Justice a professor of creative writing and a Regents' Professor at the University of Arizona.
