‎Édition originale. L'expédition de 1791, ordonnée par l'Assemblée constituante, visait à retrouver La Pérouse et à mener des recherches scientifiques et commerciales. Placée sous le commandement de d’Entrecasteaux et Huon de Kermadec, elle comprenait de nombreux scientifiques, dont le botaniste Labillardière. Partie de Brest, la flotte fit escale au Cap de Bonne-Espérance avant d'explorer l'Australie, la Tasmanie, la Nouvelle-Calédonie et plusieurs archipels du Pacifique.L'expédition fut interrompue à Java après la mort de ses commandants et le contexte révolutionnaire entraîna l’arrestation de plusieurs membres. Bien que La Pérouse ne fût pas retrouvé, Labillardière rapporta plus de 4 000 plantes inconnues et réalisa d'importantes observations sur la faune, la flore, les peuples et leurs langues. Son récit, accompagné d’illustrations, constitua une contribution majeure à l’histoire naturelle et à l’ethnographie. Ses collections furent initialement confisquées par les Britanniques, mais restituées grâce à l’intervention de Sir Joseph Banks.Sabin, 38420 ; Ferguson, 307 ; Nissen, ZBI 2331.‎

René La Bruyère a fait partie, au début de ce siècle, de la Station navale du Pacifique et il a rapporté de ce séjour les nombreuses considérations nautiques, climatiques, météorologiques, économiques et les notations pittoresques qui forment, avec d'imposantes statistiques, la partie la plus vivante de son livre. A cet égard, celui-ci constitue une mine de renseignements pas toujours très accessibles ailleurs. Mais l'exposé des opérations qui se déroulèrent de décembre 1941 à juin 1942 pour la conquête de l'Indonésie et l'encerclement de l'Australie apparaît un peu prématuré et fondé sur des renseignements encore fragmentaires. Encore plus prématuré peut paraître, en 1942, tout plan visant à « amener les peuples vers la conception de la Grande Asie » (in fine, p. 318), dont les Français d'Indochine ont fait les frais, et auquel ont échappé de justesse, en 1940-1942, ceux du Pacifique..." ‎Belle carte du Pacifique, publiée dans le voyage autour du monde du comte de La Pérouse, qui fut l'une des plus grandes expéditions de découverte de la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Les routes empruntées par l'expédition sont signalées par un trait continu. Les contours au sud-ouest de l'Australie sont partiellement tracés. L’expédition dirigée par La Pérouse quitta Brest en août 1785, doubla le cap Horn, remonta la côte ouest de l'Amérique jusqu'en Alaska en passant par l'île de Pâques et Hawaï, puis revint en Californie et traversa le Pacifique, jusqu'à Macao. Elle continua vers Samoa, les îles Tonga, puis l'Australie et Botany Bay, d'où La Pérouse écrivit la dernière lettre qui soit parvenue en Europe.Par la suite, les deux corvettes de l'expédition devaient disparaître en mer. Leurs épaves ne furent retrouvées qu'en 1826 par le capitaine anglais Peter Dillon dans l'archipel de Santa-Cruz. Bel exemplaire, replié.‎

‎Edition originale (Brunet III, 711 et 828-829 - Sabin, 38420 - Ferguson 308). "Par décret du 9 février 1791, l'Assemblée Nationale pris la décision d'organiser une expédition de secours à la recherche du comte de La Pérouse, dont on était sans nouvelles depuis trois ans. Le général d'Entrecasteaux reçu le commandement de l'expédition formée de deux flûtes, la "Recherche" et l'"Espérance" commandée par Huon Kermadec. L'astronome Bertrand, le naturaliste La Billardière, auteur de ce récit, aidé par Deschamps, Louis Ventenat également naturaliste, Piron peintre, Beautens Beaupré, géographe, etc. constituaient le groupe de scientifiques. Partis de Brest, les deux navires firent escale au Cap de Bonne-Espérance puis firent route dans les mers du sud par la terre de Diémen, etc. Pendant ce voyage, d'Entrecasteaux et Kermadec devaient décéder. La fin du texte est constituée de plusieurs vocabulaires : Malais ; de l'île de Diemen ; des îles des Amis ; de la Nouvelle Calédonie et du Waygiou. La Billardière devait ramener plus de 4 000 plantes, la plus part inconnues. Le récit de Labillardière est particulièrement intéressant pour ses descriptions et illustrations de la Tasmanie et des îles citées plus haut et renferme une somme considérable d'informations sur la faune et la flore, mais aussi sur les peuples rencontrés, leurs coutumes et même leurs langues". Atlas illustrant la Relation du voyage (MDCCCXVII), comprenant une carte repliée de la mer des Indes et d'une partie du Pacifique dressée par J.D. Barbié et quarante-trois planches gravées (faune et flore, vues et portraits), représentant des vues de villes, des personnages, des plantes et des oiseaux, etc. par Copia, Pérée et Maleuvre, d’après Piron, Audebert, Redouté et La Billardière. The frontispiece is a map of the United States that shows the Union Pacific Railroad and its connections. A third map shows counties in Nebraska in 1870 and the Union Pacific Railroad lands first 200 miles grants of 1862-64. A description of the Nebraska lands are provided county by county. The available lands are contained in alternate sections of one square mile each within a breadth of twenty miles on either side of the railroad and extend along the entire line. They extend through central Nebraska southern Wyoming and northern Colorado and Utah and include within their limits the splendid agricultural lands of the Platte Valley the great natural pastures of the Laramie Plains and the valleys of Lodge Pole Creek and Bear River and the rich iron and coal fields between the Black Hills and the Wahsatch Mountains. Original oblong maroon boards with titles stamped in gilt on the front cover decorated front and rear endpapers n. p. 210 pp. 115 full-page photographs 85 pages of text one in-text map showing the route of the railroad and an elephant folio map coded in color showing the route from Laramie to Coalmont laid-in the front of the volume. The large folding map measures 65.4 x 90 cm 25 3/4" x 35 1/2" with a scale of about 14 miles for 1 inch. This large and handsomely produced volume was likely published for the purpose of luring potential investors into view the Company's operations. Having also the recipient's name in autograph and presented with the compliments of the railroad. This unusual and most remarkable album amounts to what can honestly be described as an extensive visual history of the development of the Laramie Hahns Peak and Pacific Railway System with much material on the region through which it passed including photographs of the people the industries the immense natural resources available to them the construction of dams and canals farming mining ranching lumbering etc. The text and captions emphasize the prospects for further development with much important information both textual and visual on Laramie Steamboat Springs Hayden Vernal Meeker etc. We find no note of this edition nor even the title of this edition in Howes or Graff. The Eberstadts had a so-called trade edition with no mention of the splendid map nor the presentation leaf. Overall an album of immense importance beauty and rarity especially having the large folding map.
