LINDSAY, David
An Expedition Across Australia from South to North, Between the Telegraph Line and The Queensland Boundary, in 1885-6.
21 pages. Plus a large fold-out colour map measuring approximately 8.5 x 23 inches (22 x 59cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. David Lindsay was an Australian explorer and surveyor and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This is an abridged account of his important journey across Australia in 1885-6, in which he passed through a large tract of previously unexplored country in the Northern Territory of South Australia, west of the Queensland boundary. This valuable and absorbing account describes his expedition of the Finke River and excursion to the western boundary of Queensland, also includes an extensive chronological report of his journey from Dalhousie to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Accompanied by a spectacular fold-out colour map illustrating the explorations and surveys in the northern territories of South Australia. The map stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north to the Truer or Macumba in the south, showing Lindsay's track, survey lines, and telegraph lines. Also included is an impressive Vocabulary list, containing some important native words with their English translations.

New York NY Harcourt Brace Jovanovich HBJ: Harvest American Writing 1997. Paperback First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use; binding square and secure; text clean. Just a hint of wear to extremities; pages ever-so-slightly tanned. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. Slightly Oblong 12mo. 277pp. Trade Paperback. In her debut novel the author presents the history of a Japanese American family living in Hawaii in the 1970s. The narrator Lovey Nariyoshi tells her story of growing up in a white "haole" culture that keeps her family segregated. "No japs on TV" observes Lovey "except Mrs. Livingston and Kay-to." This engrossing novel is strongly woven together with chapters that swing from the heartfelt childhood memories of Lovey's father Hubert to the fiendish behavior of her neighbors. Hawaiian Creole is dispersed effectively with English further corroborating the fervent characters and their stories. By focusing decisively on her own distinct culture the author successfully uncovers the damaging restrictions of American culture at large. This commanding novel should delight and haunt every reader. A rare book - exuberant fresh-voiced rich crazy stabbing comic and as true-toned as a crystal glass tapped with a knife E. Annie Proulx. Unconditionally recommended. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich [HBJ]: Harvest American Writing, paperback

LOMAX, E. L., et al. (Union Pacific System)
THEATRE RAILROADS CHICAGO Diagram of the Chicago Theatres Compliments of the Passenger Dept. Union Pacific System
Omaha NE: Union Pacific System 1893. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good-. Octavo 34pp. plus five unnumbered leaves illustrated. About very good in the publisher's printed stapled wraps. Staples rusted partial split at the top of the spine and some mild dust-soiling internally; still sound though the middle leaf is neatly detached from the binding and laid-in in situ. A scarce and most interesting volume produced by the Union Pacific railway system geared towards entertainment-seeking travelers in Chicago. 32 leaves contain a full bird's eye view diagram of a different theatre in Chicago with each seat's number indicated. Each diagram is ornamented with an inset circular illustration of a notable sight from the Union Pacific line out west mostly in Utah Colorado and California printed in blue with an identifying caption. In equal parts an unusual piece of late 19th century railroadiana and an important record of the physical landscape of the Chicago theatre world in the early 1890s when its performing arts scene rivaled that of New York. OCLC records a single separately listed holding of this pamphlet in Pennsylvania. Thus possibly not retained at any of the Chicago institutions nor at Harvard's Theatre Collection. Union Pacific System unknown
