‎ECOLOGY OF FEAR: Los Angeles and the Imagination of Disaster.‎

‎New York:: Henry Holt 1998. Fine in fine dust jacket. First printing. A fascinating and still relevant look at the culture of Los Angeles - both in reality and how it is depicted in films where LA has been destroyed by everything from lava to nukes to aliens. As he states "For generations market-driven urbanization has transgressed environmental common sense. Historic wildfire corridors have been turned into view-lot suburbs wetland liquefaction zones into marinas and floodplains into industrial districts and housing tracts. Monolithic public works have been substituted for regional planning and a responsible land ethic. As a result Southern California has reaped flood fire and earthquake tragedies that were as avoidable as unnatural as the beating of Rodney King and the ensuing explosion in the streets." Illustrated with photographs. Davis has been awarded the McArthur "genius" award - and he still leaves in Los Angeles area. Notes index. 484 pp. Henry Holt, hardcover‎
