1912. Lot of 2 silver gelatin photos of students and faculty at Udupiddi Girls' School in India. 1912. Each photo Approx. 5" x 3.5" inches. Pasted to brown paper with inscriptions on both sides one reading "Udupiddi Girls' School 1912" and the other "Matron teachers and graduating class of the Udupiddi GIrls Boarding School March 1912." Women's education in India was uncommon in the early 1900's with very few options available. Among the higher castes who could afford private schooling girls were married before puberty and expected to take on domestic life at that time. If they were lucky they were taught at home. The first photo shows 59 young female students a male and female adult presumably instructors both Indian and a white female adult. The other photo shows a smaller class of 15 girls with the same white adult female who appears to be the "matron" mentioned in inscription. All of the subjects wear white some of the girls in simple long dresses others with more adornments. The girls appear to range in age from around 5 to 18 many of them looking directly at the camera their faces studious as if instructed to look serious some with half smiles. These classes show a group of girls who would have been anomalous during their time paving the way for future generations. These images predate the 1930 law where the age for marriage was raised to fourteen years old that improved female literacy rates substantially. Slight tear to bottom corner has been repaired. Calcutta: Government of India Central Publication Branch 1929. First edition. Scarce. A landmark legal intervention in the regulation of child marriage in British India this pamphlet prints the full text of the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929—commonly known as the Sarda Act—passed by the Indian Legislature and receiving the assent of the Governor General on October 1 1929. The Act criminalized the solemnization of marriages involving boys under 18 and girls under 14 later amended to 18 and 15 respectively and imposed penalties on adult men who contracted child marriages as well as on parents priests or other facilitators. Its provisions extended across all of British India including British Baluchistan and the Santhal Parganas and came into force on April 1 1930.<br /> <br /> The law was introduced at the urging of Indian social reformers particularly Har Bilas Sarda whose campaign aligned with women’s rights advocates challenging patriarchal customs under colonial rule. The legislation explicitly defined a “minor†as anyone under 18 and imposed fines and jail terms for men over 21 who married girls below the legal threshold as well as for those who conducted or arranged such ceremonies. A radical attempt to legislate personal status and protect young girls from forced early marriage the Act is recognized as a foundational moment in Indian feminist legal history and a precedent for later reforms. This official government printing priced at "1 anna or 1½d" reflects the colonial administration’s effort to disseminate the law widely across the provinces. Minor edge creasing. Overall very good condition. An artifact of pivotal reform in the legal history of South Asia and women’s rights foundational for understanding the colonial and postcolonial trajectories of gender and childhood legislation. unknown

Early (Pennsylvania?) manuscript ownerships of Mary S. Grubb and Mrs. Albert E. Landis. Called the Eighth Edition on the title page. On the half-title is a notice, printed in black letter, not frequently mentioned in descriptions of this edition: "The Profits of this Work are devoted to the Support of the Foreign Mission from America." Harriet Newell made the passage to India from America as a young wife and missionary in 1812 at the age of 19. She and her husband arrived in Calcutta in late June, but reembarked for France that October. On the voyage a daughter was born but died within a week. Harriet subsequently fell ill and died in France seven weeks later. The majority of the text is taken from Harriet's often high spirited letters and journals. She describes the ocean voyage in detail. Leonard Woods was among the founders of the American Tract Society in 1814 and American Temperance Society in 1826. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 55
