A speech discussing the Union of the United States in the face of secession seemingly arguing against secession while seeking to find common ground between the North and the South and perhaps somewhat acting as an apologist for slave powers. This includes citing speeches by William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips that appear to be in favor of secession if the South does not abolish slavery. Clemens cites population statistics in the South including slave populations. Sherrard Clemens was a cousin of Samuel Clemens Mark Twain serving as a Democrat in the House of Representatives in 1852-53 and 1857-1861. GOOD condition. Some creasing and wrinkling. Minor foxing. First Edition no Library of Congress date of publication recorded preventing any priority-of-issue determination. 8vo: xvi17-27718 advertisementspp with frontispiece and 23 pen-and-ink illustrations by Dan Beard. Publisher's original olive-green pictorial cloth upper cover stamped in black vignette of stars and stripes beneath which are the English lord and the American claimant and lettered in gilt spine lettered in gilt and stamped in black with the ornament of an eagle. A Fine copy with only trivial faults: points and spine ends rubbed very slight toning to page edges otherwise fresh tight and unmarked. BAL 3434. Johnson p.53. McBride p. 134. Twain's comedy of mistaken identities and multiple role switches was published first in various newspapers by the McClure Syndicate and later in the Idler magazine in 12 numbers. He wrote the novel with the help of recently invented by Edison phonographic dictation precursor of the Dictaphone supposedly the first author to do so. The novel was also according to Twain an attempt to write a book without mention of the weather again the first of its kind in fictitious literature. Indeed all the weather in The American Claimant is contained in an appendix at the back of the book which the reader is encouraged to turn to from time to time. In-8, cartonnage marbré moderne à la Bradel, 8 p. Edition originale et unique de cette importante et virulente intervention de Cloots qui marque sa rupture avec les Girondins. "Soumis au feu de critiques, Cloots va riposter au cours d'une séance mémorable du club des Jacobins, le 26 novembre, où l'on procède à la première séance d'épuration en radiant Roland, Lanthenas... Cloots demande la parole pour se justifier et confondre les 'Rolando-Brissotins' (…)". Il évoque son repas avec Roland qui l'a traité de "parasite", rappelle son itinéraire politique et oppose sa droiture à la fourberie "d'espions gagés par la police". Il aborde également la question de son opposition au "cabinet de St James" à Saint-Domingue et justifie son soutien à l'abolition immédiate de l'esclavage, position qui lui fut violemment reprochée (cf.
