‎Biographie du "Charlemagne de la Bulgarie" (A. Rambaud et Ch. Diehl). "L'auteur de ce livre a vécu plusieurs années en Bulgarie. En 1939, il a fait paraître, sous le pseudonyme de Christian Gérard, un volume intitulé 'Les Bulgares de la Volga et les Slaves du Danube'. Le voisinage de la Bulgarie avec l'empire byzantin et le caractère belliqueux des envahisseurs amenèrent entre eux des conflits fréquents qui constituent une bonne partie de leur histoire pendant sept siècles. La période la plus glorieuse et la plus heureuse pour la Bulgarie semble bien avoir été celle du règne de Syméon le Grand (893-927). Elle est bien caractéristique de l'époque où ce personnage réussit à donner à son pays une importance qui était peu en rapport avec sa puissance réelle. Syméon était le fils de Boris, khan des Bulgares, qui se fit chrétien sous le nom de Michel (864) et amena une bonne partie de son peuple à la nouvelle religion. Boris l'envoya à Constantinople pour qu'il pût y recevoir une solide instruction. Syméon passa une dizaine d'années dans la capitale de l'empire et se fit moine. C'est en cette qualité qu'il revint dans son pays en 888 et qu'il rejoignit son père au monastère de Titcha. Boris-Michel avait en effet abdiqué et s'était retiré dans un couvent. Son fils aîné, Vladimir, bien que baptisé, avait pris la tête du parti bulgare attaché aux traditions et à la religion des ancêtres. Comme régent, il prit des mesures qui visaient à faire disparaître toute trace d'influence étrangère, à commencer par le christianisme. Boris sortit de sa retraite, prit les armes et défit complètement Vladimir et son parti (893). Une assemblée nationale se réunit alors et vota un nouveau statut qui adopta le slave comme langue nationale. Sur le conseil de son père, Syméon abandonna la vie religieuse et prit le pouvoir. Tous deux semblent avoir fait bon marché des prescriptions ecclésiastiques, mais il ne semble pas que cet acte ait étonné les contemporains habitués à de pareils revirements. Les solides amitiés qu'il avait nouées à Constantinople n'empêchaient pas Syméon de veiller attentivement aux intérêts de son peuple. Un conflit naquit bientôt d'une injustice des Byzantins qui, au mépris des traités, voulaient transférer de Constantinople à Thessalonique les entrepôts bulgares. Syméon fit alliance avec les Petchenègues pour barrer la route aux Magyars, alliés des Byzantins ; il attaqua ceux-ci qui furent battus à plusieurs reprises et durent traiter avec leur vainqueur (897). Syméon profita de ses avantages et des troubles de l'empire pour se rendre maître de toute la partie nord de la presqu'île balkanique et imposer son protectorat à la Serbie. Alexandre, frère et successeur de Léon VI, provoqua un nouveau conflit qui amena l'armée bulgare jusque sous les murs de Constantinople (913). Syméon ne fit pas qu'étendre ses conquêtes ; il travailla à les organiser en développant l'agriculture et le commerce et en appliquant dans tout le pays son programme de formation intellectuelle parla fonction d'écoles et la production d'œuvres littéraires qui employèrent la langue slave. Quelque peu grisé par les résultats obtenus, Syméon forma le projet hardi de conquérir Constantinople et de se faire proclamer « basileus des Romains », comme le dit le sceau qu'on a de lui. Il chercha des alliances de divers côtés et même celle de l'émir arabe de Tarse. Mais la diplomatie byzantine réussit à déjouer ses intrigues et à lui susciter de multiples embarras. Nicolas le Mystique, patriarche de Constantinople, qu'il avait connu pendant son séjour dans la capitale, et Romain Lécapène, régent de l'empire, furent ses adversaires les plus résolus. Syméon rechercha l'appui de l'Occident et demanda au pape Jean X de lui reconnaître le titre de tsar et de lui envoyer les insignes de la royauté. Il les attendait encore lorsqu'il mourut inopinément, le 27 mai 927, sans avoir pu réaliser tous ses projets. Du moins il laissait la Bulgarie agrandie et dotée d'une civilisation qui lui avait longtemps fait défaut. Byzance vit bientôt s'éloigner le grave danger qui la menaçait. Pierre, fils de Syméon, traitait avec Romain Lécapène et épousait sa petite-fille Marie. Une paix de quarante ans commençait entre les Bulgares et les Byzantins. Ces derniers virent avec raison une cause de soulagement dans la disparition de Syméon qui avait été pendant plus de vingt ans un danger permanent pour leur empire. Pour eux c'était un monstre abominable. Le patriarche Nicolas le Mystique, qui lui écrivit plusieurs lettres et faisait appel à son ancienne amitié, voyait en lui un véritable « fléau de Dieu », coupable de toutes les iniquités, ne respectant ni les églises ni les personnes consacrées à Dieu. Les chroniqueurs byzantins lui font écho. (...) Les auteurs modernes ont généralement vu en lui un grand capitaine, un vrai chef d'État et un civilisateur. Ils l'ont volontiers comparé à d'autres princes du Moyen Age, Clovis, Charlemagne, saint Vladimir de Russie, saint Etienne de Hongrie, qui firent sortir leur peuple de la barbarie pour l'initier à la civilisation chrétienne. G. Sergheraert a résumé cette vie mouvementée tout en émaillant son texte de multiples digressions sur la topographie de Constantinople, sur l'organisation de l'enseignement dans cette ville, etc. L'auteur a sagement repoussé à la fin du volume les notes nécessaires à son texte. Ce sont surtout des notices bibliographiques sur les sujets traités. Une carte montre l'étendue de l'empire de Syméon. Il comprenait la vallée du Danube depuis Belgrade jusqu'à la mer Noire, la Bosnie, la Serbie, la Macédoine presque entière et la Bulgarie du Sud. Moins d'un siècle après la mort de Syméon, l'empire byzantin aurait récupéré, sous Basile II, environ la moitié de ces possessions et fait disparaître l'État bulgare lui-même." (R.
