Traina Giusto
428 A.D.: An Ordinary Year at the End of the Roman Empire
8vo, cloth n dj 214pp. This is a sweeping tour of the Mediterranean world from the Atlantic to Persia during the last half-century of the Roman Empire. By focusing on a single year not overshadowed by an epochal event, 428 AD provides a truly fresh look at a civilization in the midst of enormous change--as Christianity takes hold in rural areas across the empire, as western Roman provinces fall away from those in the Byzantine east, and as power shifts from Rome to Constantinople. Taking readers on a journey through the region, Giusto Traina describes the empires' people, places, and events in all their simultaneous richness and variety. The result is an original snapshot of a fraying Roman world on the edge of the medieval era. The result is an original snapshot of a fraying Roman world on the edge of the medieval era. Readers meet many important figures, including the Roman general Flavius Dionysius as he encounters a delegation from Persia after the Sassanids annex Armenia; the Christian ascetic Simeon Stylites as he stands and preaches atop his column near Antioch; the eastern Roman emperor Theodosius II as he prepares to commission his legal code; and Genseric as he is elected king of the Vandals and begins to turn his people into a formidable power. We are also introduced to Pulcheria, the powerful sister of Theodosius, and Galla Placidia, the queen mother of the western empire, as well as Augustine, Pope Celestine I, and nine-year-old Roman emperor Valentinian III. Full of telling details, 428 AD illustrates the uneven march of history. As the west unravels, the east remains intact. As Christianity spreads, pagan ideas and schools persist. And, despite the presence of the forces that will eventually tear the classical world apart, Rome remains at the center, exerting a powerful unifying force over disparate peoples stretched across the Mediterranean.

Travel to Greece; Egypt; Turkey; British Palestine
Interwar Travel Photography Mediterranean and Middle East Grand Tour Album Across Europe and British Mandate Palestine 1927
1927. Photo album documenting a multi country group यातà¥à¤°à¤¾ in 1927 records interwar travel across southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean including regions under colonial administration and recent political transition. The album follows a group of travelers moving from France through Italy Greece Turkey British administered Palestine and Egypt capturing urban landmarks archaeological sites and local populations encountered along the route. The sequence provides visual evidence of tourism infrastructure mobility and cross cultural observation during a period when former imperial territories such as Constantinople were undergoing redefinition following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of modern nation states.<br /> <br /> Album contains 93 black and white silver gelatin photographs and four real photo postcards with images ranging approximately from 2.5 x 4 inches to 3.5 x 5.5 inches and one larger group photograph measuring about 9 x 7 inches. Photographs are mounted on black paper boards with handwritten captions in white pencil and interleaved tissue guards; string bound in patterned cloth boards. The album opens in Avignon with views of St. Pierre's Church and the Palais des Papes then continues through Italy with scenes of Naples and Pompeii as well as shipboard images captioned S.S. Adriatic. Subsequent sections include Athens with views of the Parthenon followed by Constantinople where four postcards depict the harbor the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Hagia Sophia shortly after the end of the Ottoman Empire. In British Mandate Palestine images show street scenes in Nazareth and Jerusalem including sites along the River Jordan the Western Wall and the Garden of Gethsemane alongside a captioned portrait labeled "A Jewish Maiden." The album concludes in Egypt with extensive views of archaeological and urban sites at Thebes Memphis Cairo and Luxor including the Obelisk of Hatshepsut Edfu Temple the tomb of Amenhotep II the Colossi of Memnon and the pyramids and Great Sphinx at Giza where the final group portrait shows the travelers posed on camels.<br /> <br /> Produced during the interwar period the album reflects expanding international tourism networks alongside ongoing European influence in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. The juxtaposition of ancient sites modern transport and local populations situates the material within broader histories of archaeology empire and travel culture in the early twentieth century. Light general wear to album and mounts; images well preserved with clear captions; overall very good condition. unknown

Treitel, Leopold [Jakob Jehuda] / Brann, Marcus [Markus, Mordechai, Mordechaj] [Ed.]
Philonische Studien von Leopold Treitel. Herausgegeben von M. Brann.
RARE collection of studies on Philo of Alexandria by Leopold Jakob Jehuda Treitel (1845-1931), a renowned German-Jewish classical scholar whose main academic and scholarly interest revolved around Philo's philosophy. He was the last rabbi of the Jewish community in the town of Laupheim, then Württemberg, Southern Germany. Treitel wrote his PhD thesis on Philo in 1870 in Latin ('De Philonis Judaei Sermone Dissertatio), and published several books and articles on Philo and his philosophy, culminating in his magnus opus 'Die gesamte Theologie und Philosophie Philos von Alexandria', published in 1923. Treitel claimed that Philo employed 'rabbinic methods and patterns of interpretation, although Greek methodology did make a deep impact upon the content'. Influenced by Frankel and Graetz, Treitel attempted to demonstrate the importance of Philo's philosophy to Jewish thinking, particularly because of Philo's emphasis on the social order of Jewish life and the universal interpretation of the Jewish scriptures, and also because he 'did not imply an abrogation of the law, but rather to the contrary its wider dissemination and thus affirmation'. 235x155mm. VI+130 pages. Black/grey marbled rebound board Hardcover with cloth spine and corners. Cover yellowing. Rear cover/spine rear hinge upper edge peeled. Spine edges bumped. Sticker on spine hinges upper part. Age-stains on inner cover, whitepages and title page. Some pages bottom corner/edge slightly creased. Color pencil/pen marks near text on some pages. Pages yellowing, some pages and text-block age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book on the philosophy of Philo from Alexandria, and its relation to Judaism, written by the foremost exponent of Philo's affinity with Jewish thought, is in good condition.
