Captain Corelli's Mandolin : The Illustrated Film Companion
The island of Cephallonia is now familiar as the setting of the novel, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". This book explores the turbulent history of the island, focusing on the World War II years of Italian occupation, as well as telling the behind-the-scenes story of how the film version was made.;As most buildings on Cephallonia fell to rubble in a 1953 earthquake, the way it would have looked in World War II had to be recreated by sets built for the filming of Louis de Bernieres' now legendary "Captain Corelli\s Mandolin". But do not expect the novel to be reproduced so faithfully because that is not the film-makers\ style. They add their own visions, carefully explained here in an official companion to the movie, and de Bernieres\ introduction shows how he anticipated that. All he could do to ensure respectful treatment of his novel was insist it should not be sold to Hollywood. The history of the filming is itself fascinating - the search for the cast, the locations, even the guns for the massacre of the Italians by the Germans and the other battle sequences. Film journalist Clark has done a good job here, aided and abetted by the stunning Greek island setting and ample action and character stills from the film. Book

The Fall of Crete
It was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War--a truly epic story. For both Allies and Axis powers, Crete offered immense strategic importance for controlling the Mediterranean, with great naval harbors, level areas for airfields, and mountain anti-aircraft positions. How did it happen, then, that in 1941, German paratroopers--outnumbered 5 to 1 and with only a single airstrip for supply and reinforcement--spectacularly overcame thousands of British troops and an even larger contingent from Greece, to hold Crete till war's end? Even more shocking, all the action took place in a mere five days. An expert historian vividly explains British strategic blunders and tactical failures, along with the brazen efforts of the Germans. 192p. illus. bibliography Book

Clarke, John R.
Looking at Laughter: Humor, Power, and Transgression in Roman Visual Culture, 100 B.C.- A.D. 250
8vo, cloth ib dj, 336 pgs. illustrations In this fresh, accessible, and beautifully illustrated book, his third to examine an aspect of Roman visual culture, John R. Clarke explores the question, "What made Romans laugh?" Looking at Laughter examines a heterogeneous corpus of visual material, from the crudely obscene to the exquisitely sophisticated and from the playful to the deadly serious--everything from street theater to erudite paintings parodying the emperor. Nine chapters, organized under the rubrics of Visual Humor, Social Humor, and Sexual Humor, analyze a wide range of visual art, including wall painting, sculpture, mosaics, and ceramics. Archaeological sites, as well as a range of ancient texts, inscriptions, and graffiti, provide the background for understanding the how and why of humorous imagery. This entertaining study offers fascinating insights into the mentality of Roman patrons and viewers who enjoyed laughing at the gods, the powers-that-be, and themselves.

NEL PAESE DELLE SELVE E DELLE IDEE I VIAGGIATORI ITALIANI IN GERMANIA 1866-1914
Claudio Visentin Nel paese delle selve e delle idee. I viaggiatori italiani in Germania (1866-1914) Jaca Book 1995 512 PP.
