Il IV libro presenta una ricca panoramica dei cicli mitici ellenici, il V tratta il popolamento, l'etnografia e la topografia delle isole greche e il VI delinea una schematica sintesi della teogonia ellenica. La narrazione propriamente storica inizia con il VII libro, che si occupa del cosiddetto Medioevo ellenico - durante il quale andò prendendo forma la civiltà delle poleis - e delle origini di Roma, in un'esplorazione dell'affascinante zona di confine che separa il mito dalla storia.
