THUCYDIDES PERICLES AND THE IDEA OF ATHENS IN THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR
Cambridge University Press. 2010. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Gift inscription from author to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. Includes letter and postcard from author tipped in. Lower corners bumped.; 324 pages; Thucydides Pericles and the Idea of Athens in the Peloponnesian War is the first comprehensive study of Thucydides' presentation of Pericles' radical redefinition of the city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused instead on the sea and the empire. Thucydides shows that Pericles' reconceputalization of the city led the Athenians both to Melos and to Sicily. Toward the end of his work Thucydides demonstrates that flexible thinking about the city exacerbated the Athenians' civil war. Providing a thorough critique and analysis of Thucydides' neglected book 8 Taylor shows that Thucydides praises political compromise centered around the traditional city in Attica. In doing so he implicitly censures both Pericles and the Athenian imperial project itself.; Signed by Author . 0521765935 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE ARGUMENTS OF THE EMPEROR JULIAN AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS Translated from the Greek Fragments Preserved by Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria; to Which Are Added Extracts from the Other Works of Julian Relative to the Christians
Exact Reprint of the Tetypeset original (1809) Chicago 1930 ARES PUBLISHERS INC. In his school edict Julian prohibits Christian teachers from using pagan scripts e. G. The Illias, that formed the core of Roman education. This was an attempt to remove some of the power of Christian schools by alienating their students from Roman society, not to mention a satirical attack at what Julian may have viewed as a hypocrisy: Christian schools teaching the Bible as the sole source of knowledge while simultaneously teaching classical pagan texts as well, knowledge of which was needed for success in Roman society. In his tolerance edict of 362, Julian decreed the reopening of pagan temples, the restitution of alienated temple properties, and called back Christian bishops that were exiled by church edicts. The latter was an instance of tolerance of different religious views, but may also have been an attempt by Julian to widen a schism between different Christian sects, further weakening the Christian movement as a whole. ; 8.25 x 0.5 x 5.5 Inches; 119 pages

Taylor-Watts, Carolyn [Carolyn Matthews]
Helena: An Odyssey
Helena: an Odyssey is an absorbing saga of myth and obsession, of a family haunted by their illustrious Byzantine past and a compulsion to redeem it. Bittersweet love stories are set against wars, forced population exchanges and confusion about ethnic identity. Woven throughout lies the power and symbolism of hair. Helena's daughter Georgia, narrating the tale, begins in 1908 when her great grandparent the Greek Yiannis Kouvalis and two sons set out on an epic journey from a poor Turkish village to glittering Smyrna on the Aegean Coast. Eventually succeeding as prosperous merchants, the sons marry and have children. But the Young Turks are rising, and the ensuing Greco-Turkish wars culminate in the fiery destruction of Smyrna. Ethnic cleansing follows. Surviving remnants of the Kouvalis family are reduced once more to poverty and forced into what, to them, is an alien Greece. The burden of redemption passes down the generations to fall, finally, on the unlikely Helena who longs only to create beautiful hair and through it, achieve international fame. But she is distracted by her intense love for local boy Stephan. Thwarted in her attempts to follow him when he leaves for the coal mines of Australia, she travels instead to her sister in Toronto. It is here where her real heartaches begin.[Only 2 copies in WorldCat, NONE in Canada] Book

Tennant, Emma
A House in Corfu : A Family's Sojourn in Greece
The story of an unspoiled island and an English family making a home by the Aegean Sea. In the early 1960s Emma Tennant's parents, on a cruise, spotted a magical bay and decided to build a house there. This book is the story of that house, Rovinia, set above the bay in Corfu where legend has it Ulysses was shipwrecked and found by Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous. It is also the story of the couple who have been at Rovinia since the feast in the grove that followed the roof-raising-Maria, a miraculous cook and the presiding spirit of the house, and her husband, Thodoros-and of the inhabitants of the local village, high on the hill above the bay. Tennant offers us the delights of quotidian adventures-salt water in the well, roads to nowhere, collapsing walls-all hilariously presented. That the house is still lived in and loved, with new generations coming to understand the delights of Corfu, is a tribute to the people and a special landscape which is distinctly Greek. Full of color and contrast, A House in Corfu shows the huge changes in island life since the time of the Tennant's arrival, and celebrates, equally, the joy of belonging to a timeless world: the world of vine, olive, and sea205p.
