Nella Grecia arcaica una società prestatale non solo esisté per secoli, ma ha lasciato documentazioni letterarie nei poemi di Omero e di Esiodo. In questo volume sono riportate le posizioni di autorevoli studiosi che hanno trattato a fondo il problema delle origini dello Stato in Grecia (e quindi in Europa), problema che tanta importanza ha anche per le ideologie politiche contemporanee. Dagli scritti di questi studiosi risulta evidente che la nozione di una società prestatale all'inizio del primo millennio a.C. in Grecia é largamente acquisita dagli storici, anche se non tutti sono disposti a riconoscere che il mondo di Omero e di Esiodo è un mondo essenzialmente barbarico, nel senso etnologico del termine. Nei testi riportati vi sono quindi discordanze e divergenze che devono stimolare il lettore a farsi una idea propria, sottraendosi a nozioni convenzionali e superate sulla Grecia antica (che non fu sempre classica come la troviamo nella sua creazione più nota, la democrazia ateniese) e anche sullo Stato, forma di convivenza che i greci inventarono in una fase già relativamente avanzata della loro storia. Fausto Codino (Lucca, 1927) ha studiato filologia class ca e storia antica alla Scuola Normale di Pisa, e alle università di Pisa e Zurigo. Ha pubblicato presso Einaudi Introduzione a Omero, e numerose traduzioni di autori classici e studi moderni. Fa parte del comitato di redazione delle Opere complete di K. Marx e F. Negli studi e nell'insegnamento della Storia romana, non viene solitamente attribuita una particolare attenzione alla parte religiosa, limitandosi soprattutto a ricercare ed esporre gli eventi quali guerre e conquiste, mutamenti di governo, lotte e discordie intestine, usi e costumi in genere. Tuttavia, feste e ricorrenze accompagnavano costantemente la vita quotidiana nell'Antica Roma, e ne scandivano i ritmi di vita in una maniera molto rilevante, esprimendosi in riti religiosi e in manifestazioni sociali. Il calendario romano era costellato di tali ricorrenze festive, religiose e civili, e la vita della città si svolgeva in funzione di tali eventi. L'anno era diviso in mesi, che prima della riforma di Numa Pompilio erano solo dieci, e iniziavano da marzo. Ulteriori ritocchi vennero apportati da Giulio Cesare, che lo rese molto simile a quello odierno. Ciascun mese era a sua volta composto di tre serie di giorni: le Calende, le None e le Idi. I giorni, infine, si distinguevano in festi (festivi) e profesti (feriali), e inoltre in fasti, nefasti e intercisi, e avevano anche altre suddivisioni minori. A differenza di altre opere dedicate allo stesso argomento, questo libro vuol costituire uno studio complessivo sulla vita di Roma antica, non considerando le diverse feste e ricorrenza in maniera isolata, ma esaminando come esse costituiscano tante manifestazioni di un unico concetto e si colleghino alla storia civile della città. L'opera ci permette di osservare il fluire della vita stessa nell'antica Roma ed è un testo documentario di rara precisione filologica e storica, contenendo i risultati di accurate ricerche sul calendario romano, sulla religione e sulla divinità, nonché sugli usi e costumi dell'antica Roma.
