Papavizas George Constantine
Blood and Tears: Greece 1940-1949: a Story of War and Love
Washington: American Hellenic Institute Foundation 2005 A powerful autobiography set in the turbulent decade of 1940s Greece. Through the eyes of an impressionable and intelligent young man who came of age in a time of world war foreign occupation resistance and civil war we witness the tragedy and trauma suffered by Greece. While uniquely personal this is also the story of young Greeks cast unwillingly into the ambivalences and horrors of WWII.The authors descriptions are vivid and convincing. Against a rigorously researched backdrop of the key historical events we see youthful idealism being forcibly reconciled to the realities of hunger brutality dissension and death. With a keen eye for detail and reflecting on the mundane as well as the profound we watch as Greece patriotically fends off foreign invasion and survives years of harsh occupation but gullibly and disastrously succumbs to the blandishments of utopians. 1st US Ed. Martyries Mias Diadromos IN GREEK
Athens: Benaki Museum 2010 Elli Pappas filed in 1993 and 1995 two texts in the Historical Archives of the Benaki Museum.for publication only after her death. The first document was a typed 52 pages entitled "Case Ploumbides" and a second group of papers 108 pages total consisting of: foreword entitled "About" an autobiographical text the body of articles in newspapers "Dawn" and " New "entitled" Appendix " document entitled" Letters to my son "and a handwritten letter by Nikos Ploumbides to the same date 4. V. 52. Fulfilling the wishes of the donor in October 2009 they are published intact and without interference."Anyone interested can read this text should not believe that you will find an autobiography. Undoubtedly those who write with concern regarding my life and my experiences but is strictly limited as much as I could and I could in a class experience: a those relating to my position on the Communist Party and the adventures of our mutual relationship. In these experiences I stood I tried to give them in my text I am presenting to the Archive of the Benaki Museum in the hope that something can be of assistance. The change in operating procedures making and implementing decisions respect for the fighters is most basic needs for the Left in our country and then by the harsh experiences of the collapse of "actually existing socialism." The question is whether these needs or the historic necessities-have become common sense to all parties of the Left especially in the communist movement. This is the reason that motivated me to register my own testimony .for those albeit not all I saw I knew I got into the movement which dedicated our lives-and no exchange " cash-outs. Paradissis, Alexander [Paradeisis, Alexandros]
Fortresses and Castles of Greece [Vol.1]
Greece is strewn with hundreds of castles and fortresses of all ages and civilizations. This rugged and curious region in the southernmost part of Europe, at the vantage point of the Mediterranean... is full of castles and fortresses either on top of mountains or on coasts. There exist walls of neolithic citadels six and seven thousand years old, castles and fortresses of Venetian, Frankish, Byzantine and others as old as three thousand years and even more. This series by the eminent historian Alexander Paradissis, is perhaps the only study of the subject covering the whole of Greek history. The comprehensive material, maps, plans and illustrations will satisfy historians and tourists alike. Volume One covers Northern and East Central Greece : Attica, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Phocis, Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace. 174p.illus. with 4 Coloured plates. map, index Book
