A non molta distanza dalla stazione Termini, il profilo urbano di Roma è segnato dalla presenza di imponenti resti, integrati nelle mura della città: è tutto ciò che rimane del perimetro dei castra praetoria, la caserma che alloggiava le coorti pretorie. Ma chi erano i pretoriani? Gli storici antichi, senatori animati per lo più da sentimenti ostili nei confronti del regime imperiale, non esitavano a considerarli lo strumento di repressione utilizzato dai Principi per schiacciare l’antica libertas repubblicana, quando non addirittura una soldataglia interessata soltanto ad accrescere i propri privilegi. Ancora oggi l’immaginario comune, nutrito dalla vulgata di certa fiction, tende a vedere nei pretoriani gli sgherri in uniforme di imperatori crudeli e pazzoidi: una muta di spietati cani da caccia sempre pronti a mordere persino la mano di chi li nutriva. Questo volume si propone di ampliare la visuale sulle fonti, per meglio definire il volto degli uomini – soldati, tutori dell’ordine, funzionari – che marciarono sotto l’insegna dello Scorpione.
