Narrative of the Field Operations connected with The Zulu War of 1879.
London: HMSO 1907. Superbly provenanced Octavo. Original red morocco-grain cloth gilt-lettered spine ornamental blind paneling to sides. 7 folding maps in rear pocket including the unlisted map of the Lines of Communication which was not issued with the first impression of 1881 10 other maps and plans 8 folding all lithographed by Graham & Weller London one folding table. Spine sunned sides variably faded a little wear to extremities. A very good copy. Second edition 1 500 copies printed; a particularly nice copy of this inevitably uncommon official account of the Zulu War with a fine martial provenance inscribed boldly in pencil on the front pastedown "W. V-S 1/5th RG. FF"; this is Brig.-Gen. William Desmond Villiers-Stuart 1872-1961 who served with the 5th Royal Gurkhas Frontier Force. He fought in the Tirah Campaign 1897 where he was dangerously wounded and on the North-West Frontier between 1897 and 1902 seeing further action in the punitive incursion into Waziristan 1901-02. During the Great War he was mentioned in despatches on three occasions. This experience on the north-West Frontier fitted him superbly for the role of commandant of the Mountain Warfare School India in 1921. During the early 1920s he was back campaigning again in Waziristan and was awarded the DSO in 1925. Villiers-Stuart has been described as "a dedicated moderniser whose scientific approach to training for his Gurkha company involved lectures using 144 graphic photographs of modern warfare from the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 – 'wonderful photos' he remembered grimly 'in which actual battlefields effects of bombardments misery of wounded and the dreadful state of the dead were shown one at a time'" George Morton-Jack The Indian Empire at War 2018. He is also the subject of two books Villiers-Stuart on the Frontier: 1894-1914 1989 and Villiers-Stuart Goes to War 1990. The 1881 edition of 2000 copies is widely believed to have been suppressed. "Most military accounts of the campaign rest squarely on the official Narrative. A reasonably objective summary it skirts controversial material but is neither complete nor free from error." Donald R. Morris The Washing of the Spears 1994 p.619. The compiler Colonel John Sutton Rothwell RA 1841-1893 was identified by Jay Luvaas in Higham's The Writing of Official Military History 1999. Zulu War historian Ian Beckett remarks that "Rothwell derived information from the early report prepared by Walter James and from the enquiry. Rothwell also drew on the candid correspondence received by the head of the branch Sir Archibald Alison official despatches and reports Dispassionate official history was not intended to raise controversies unnecessarily or to criticize the conduct of operations" Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana OUP 2019.
