Total technical ignorance of the machine minder. Misgivings of Oliver Goldsmith, Ruskin, and Morris. The remedy not retrogression but equal distribution of the leisure made possible by mass production. Ignorance and helplessness as great in the modern household as in the factory. --- DISABLEMENT ABOVE AND BELOW --- As the disablement does not extend to the workers' leisure it is important that they should have plenty of it. Unfortunately it is as ill distributed as income, the tendency of Capitalism being to separate the population into a class doing all the work with no leisure and a class doing no work and having all the leisure. The feudal system avoided this by placing all the public services on the shoulders of the landlords. The transfer of these services to a bureaucracy leaves the proprietary or capitalist class even more completely disabled than the proletariat for the conduct of industry. This disablement increases with the development of capitalist civilization, and may be regarded as a function of it. --- THE MIDDLE STATION IN LIFE --- The industrial disablement of the proletariat and the proprietariat necessitates the intervention of a middle class to direct industrial operations and transact the business they involve. How this necessity was met. Primogeniture. The propertyless younger sons. The professions. The men of business. The clerks. The breakdown of the monopoly of education by the middle class now opens it to capable proletarians as well as to younger sons and their descendants. The resultant hardening of the lot of the younger sons. The propertyless daughters. Opening of the professions to them. Woman's natural monopoly of housekeeping. It creates not only a Woman Question but a Man Question. --- DECLINE OF THE EMPLOYER --- The employer was master of the situation in the days of small firms with modest capitals. Modern big business has outgrown their resources. Joint stock companies have succeeded to firms, and Trusts to joint stock companies. Multiple shops are conquering the retail trade. A bookplate to the front pastedown states that this copy was bequeathed to the Library of the Royal Empire Society by Flying-Officer R.T.E.Latham August 1944 and two ink stamps confirm that it was subsequently withdrawn from stock. These two stamps plus two neatly inked sets of numerals one to the front pastedown and one to the index page are the only indications of former library ownership. Small 4to. 54pp. Original white publishers cloth with internal wire spiral binding blocked in blue at the spine. Illustrated with four colour maps and thirty-eight photographs. Some staining to the cloth at head of the upper and lower boards and half a dozen small spots of foxing to the backstrip spine. Internally a very crisp and bright copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper which is a little dust soiled and chafed with a little creased to the top edge and a single tiny area of loss. Small 4to. 61pp. White boards with internal wire spiral binding. With a colour map and over sixty photographs including five contributed by John Betjeman. Cloth a little discoloured from handling and with some unsightly water-staining to base of upper and lower boards also affecting the pastedowns endpapers and a tiny portion of the base of the title page although the remainder of the leaves are spared. Water-staining aside this is a nice bright copy of an uncommon Shell Guide complete with non-price-clipped dust wrapper depicting a 19th century engraving of the interior of Gloucester Cathedral dust marked chipped with some loss to head and base of spine panel and tips of several corners and with evidence of water-staining. This unfortunate staining aside this is quite a crisp copy of one of the scarcest titles in the series. Faber, London Hardcover‎

Illustrated with two full-page colour maps and scores of photographs many full-page or double-spread predominantly taken by the author who also contributes a series of drawings of Minster Lovell. The boards lifting a fraction at the fore edge and with a trace of very light toning to the leaf margins. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper nicked at the upper edge with several tiny fractions of loss with two or three short edge-creases and a little toning to the spine panel. The Faber re-issue of the eleventh title in the series and the only one written by Piper alone Faber acquired series shortly before the publication of the thirteenth title and reissued the entire run up to that point between March and April 1939. A small area of surface abrasion to the base of two adjacent plate leaves. A somewhat worn copy but still quite crisp internally. The original Matlock entry in the gazetteer has been pasted over with an alternate description as is invariably the case. The third volume in the Shell Guide series and one of the more uncommon. The Faber re-issue of the seventh title in the series this one edited by the father-and-son duo Charles and Peter Quennell Faber acquired series shortly before the publication of the thirteenth title and reissued the entire run up to that point between March and April 1939. Photographic endpapers and with sixteen pink-tinted leaves of photographs and further monochrome photographs throughout including several by the author and one by his father Sir Muirhead Bone. Spine ends bumped and two small indentations to the upper board. A touch of rusting to the spiral binding resulting in just a trace of offsetting to the front endpapers. Neat former owner name inked to a blank preliminary leaf. A very crisp and pleasing copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper correspondingly bumped at spine ends resulting in several short but ragged tears and a little further chafing to corner tips.
