Quando esce nelle sale americane, distribuito come un b-movie qualsiasi, sono in pochi a degnare d'attenzione "Rapina a mano armata", e sui "Cahiers du cinéma" Jean-Luc Godard liquida il film come un'imitazione di "Giungla d'asfalto". Eppure il terzo film di Stanley Kubrick è molto di più. Innanzitutto, è un labirinto dalla raffinata struttura temporale, che influenzerà cineasti come Quentin Tarantino. È un meccanismo narrativo a orologeria minato da occulte, paradossali aporie, disseminate proprio da chi (il narratore) dovrebbe chiarirle. È un film di genere che però del genere conserva solo la pelle, perché Kubrick ne smonta convenzioni e meccanismi come farà in futuro con il film di guerra, la science fiction e l'horror. La struttura noir di "Rapina a mano armata" è un'incubatrice in cui trovano già posto i temi portanti dell'universo kubrickiano, a partire dalla lotta dei protagonisti contro un mondo estraneo e ostile, che rifugge dalla razionalità e dalla logica. E lo sguardo incredulo e instupidito di Sterling Hayden di fronte allo scacco finale è lo sguardo dell'uomo kubrickiano, sconfitto dai meccanismi che ha creato e che si illudeva di poter dominare.
