‎Charles Baedeker Coblentz 1846 . First edition. pp. xxiv 309 6 of 8 plans maps of Mainz and Cologne replaced with copies on dark brown paper and one general map in two parts at the rear; rebacked preserving most of publisher's original yellow pictorial Biedermeier boards; overall a very good copy.<br /> This rare early Baedeker was translated by Professor Klein from the fifth German edition published in the same year and was the second French title to be published by Baedeker. The first was published in 1832 under the title " Voyage du Rhin de Mayence a Cologne." However this is considered to be the first true French Baedeker as much of the guide had been re-written. Baedeker had also introduced more town plans which include Cologne and Strasbourg. <br /><br />This copy is bound in the attractive yellow pictorial bindings known as Biedermeier the period 1815-1848 is often in German-speaking countries referred to as the Biedermeier period in art and especially with reference to a style of furniture. The architectural and landscape designs on these bindings always represent the area covered in the Baedeker. They are considered to be highly collectible. Pierre de Courbetin founder of the modern day Olympic Games had originally intended to hold the games in Paris but after the Panathenaic Stadium had been excavated in 1869 he decided to hold them in Greece the birthplace of the Olympics and asked Baedeker to publish a special guide for the occasion. Few copies survive as many were discarded after use. Rare especially in such good condition. Issued for distribution at the first modern Olympic Games which ran from 6th to 15th April 1896.
