Notes on end pages. <br><br> Founded in 1827 Baedeker guides gained popularity during the second half of the 19th century so much so that Baedekering became part of everyday language. They were an invaluable and essential part of "civilized travel" in the fin-de-siecle. Baedeker was known for both its accuracy and attention to detail. Included in each are intricate colored fold-out maps and floor plans. Baedeker's comments and recommendations open a fascinating window into the mores of a world now past. <br><br>An interesting side note: Literary references to Baedeker's abound from E. M. Forester's A Room with a View to Mark Twain's A Tramp Abroad. T.E. Lawrence is reputed to have used Baedeker's guide to Palestine during his Doctoral work in the Levant and prompted his Allied superiors to make facsimile copies during WWI. <br><br>During the Luftwaffe's Vergeltungsangriffe the guides were important enough to be reportedly cited by Gustav Braun von Stumm that "We shall go out and bomb every building in Britain marked with three stars in the Baedeker Guide."3 In the so-called "Baedeker Blitz" of 1942 the English cities of Exeter Bath Norwich York and Canterbury were bombed. Klein's Rheinreise von Mainz bis Köln and after the death of the author Baedeker himself revised and updated the work recreating it for a new market. Using his own travel experiences he guided the tourist to the principal attractions in each place saving travellers the expense of hiring their own guide. He thus created a new type of guidebook which was widely copied throughout Europe and opened up tourism to a new class of visitor. The reliability of the information was ensured by annual journeys by Baedeker himself and by reference to respected published sources and expert scholars. . . . This is the less common edition that was featured in E M Forster's book "A Room With A View". The British Library writes: "In E M Forster�s A Room with a View the Baedeker is an indispensable possession for the British tourist allowing him or her to wander around the city independently. At the beginning of the novel the protagonist Lucy Honeychurch memorises Baedeker�s suggested itineraries before visiting Florence. Forster titled Chapter 2 of his novel �In Santa Croce with no Baedeker�. In it the unconventional Miss Lavish reprimands Lucy for depending on her guidebook which she describes as superficial. The real Italy according to Miss Lavish could never be understood through a guidebook but through personal observation.
