London Bulwer and Co. 1804. 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Year 1804-Part II. Pp. 419-430. Clean and fine. � First appearance of the paper in which Wollaston announced his discovery of the metallic element Rhodium.<br><br>"Dr. Wollaston dissolved a portion of crude platinum in qgua regia and neutralized the excess acid with caustic soda. He then added salammoniac to precipitate the platinum as ammonium chloroplatinate and mercurous cyanide to precipitate the palladium as palladium cyanide. After filteringoff the precipitate he decomposed the excess mercurous cyanide inthe filtarate by adding hydrochloric acid and evaporating to dryness. When he washed the residue with alcohol everything dissolved except a beautiful dark red powder which proved to be a double chloride of sodium and a new metal which because of the rose color of its salts Dr. Wollaston named 'Rhodium'. He found that the sodium rhodium chloride could be easely reduced by heating it in a current of hydrogen and that after the sodium chloride had been washed out the rhodium remained as a metallic powder. he also succeeded in obtaining a rhodium button."Weeks: Discovery of the Elements. p. 104-05. unknown

Wurtz's paper: pp. 443-506. � First appearance of the entire memoir in which Wurtz describes his outstanding discovery of Liebig�s prediction that there might be organic compounds analogous to ammonia and derivable from it by the replacement of hydrogen - the amines. The discovery was announced in 1849 and a small extract was printed in "Comptes rendu" 4 pp. The offered paper is the memoir in full.<br><br>Wurtz is most noted for his investigation of glycols and for his discovery of the amines. The latter discovery in 1849 the paper offered was very significant at the time for ot suggested the possibility of a new type the ammonia type which helped to explain the behaviour of nitrogenous compounds. Light browning to titlepage otherwise fine. � First appearance of this groundbreaking paper giving the first really convincing evidence that the fringes are produced by interference of light waves and giving the experimental demonstrations of the general law of Interference.This importent demonstration served as the experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light. - In his two preceeding papers "On the Theory of Light and Colours" 1802 and "An account of Some Cases of the Production of Colours not hitherto described" 1802 - he only partially announced his principle of Interference and the statement of it in "An Account." was entirely hypothetical and not experimental. Source Book in Physics gives extracts of this paper and a later paper under the head: Discovery of the interference of light pp.308-15.<br>Young also shows in this paper that diffraction effects can be explained by the interference law.<br><br>"The experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light as Young formulated it was interference. The fact has already been observed that two trauins of water waves may be so superposed that in certain regions the throughs of one train will lie continuously on the crests of another thereby producing zero disturbance.Destryctive interference is said to occur between the two trains of waves in the former case and constructivee interference in lthe latter. Similarly two sound waves may be so combined as to produce alternate regions of silence and enhanced sound. The phenomenon of interference of which the forgoing are familiar examples is easely comprehensible in the case of combining waves but would be utterly incomprehensible in the case of combining streams of particles. So when Young demonstrated in 1803 in the paper offered here that two beams of light could under properly controlled conditions be made to combine in such a way as to produce alternate regions of darkness and light he was rightly considered to have identified in light a characteristic property of waves." He explained astigmatism as a result of the irregular curvature of the eye's cornea and eliminated any role of for the cornea in accomodation. His interests and discoveries in physiological optics - in 1793 he discovered that accomodation is due to a change of the curvature of the crystalline lens - sharpened his interest in the nature of light in which field he became a master and well-known for his revival of the wave theory of light Huygens explaining the phenomena of interference and dispersion thus bringing up new evidence for the undalatory nature of light. - Garrison & Morton: 1487. unknown
