‎Vineyards of Sydney. Cradle of the Australian Wine Industry. From First Settlement to Today.‎

‎Sydney: Horwitz Grahame 1990. 222pp index references map num bw ills pictorial endpapers. Or cloth in jacket. Slight edge wear to jacket. SIGNED by author on half-title page. Reveals the location of Australia's first vineyard. Until 1823 Sydney was the only vineyard region in Australia and it remained the dominant region for a further thirty years. Vineyards existed in most areas including several unusual ones. Many doctors established vineyards in Sydney including Dr Penfold and Dr Lindeman both still familiar names in the Australian wine industry thus beginning Ausralia's tradition of edical wine makers. Also includes important statistics previously lost which reveal how significant the Sydney region was as a wine producing area until it was destroyed by phylloxeria at the turn of the century. . Drop-title in each instance; small holes in the inner margins where sewn when bound now disbound as one item; small marginal paper flaw to one leaf; short tear to the map near the stub; in excellent condition. South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 53 54 and 55 of 1885 with print runs of 850 870 and 670 copies respectively. Primarily given over to reports of pastoral occupation including several first-hand accounts of new country explored. Present-day readers may be interested to note the comments made by the Government Resident J. Langdon Parsons in his section headed 'Aboriginals and Settlement' in the first report: 'The blacks are beginning to realise that the white man with his herds and his fences and his preservation of water is interfering with what they properly enough from their point of view regard as their natural rights. Their hunting grounds and game preserves are being disturbed and their food supply both diminished and rendered uncertain. That settlement and stocking must and will go on is certain - that outrages will be committed by both sides is probable; but even those who do not claim to be philanthropists are not satisfied with the contemplation that the blacks are to be improved off the face of the earth'. ‎Quarterly Report on Northern Territory four consecutively issued reports‎

‎Adelaide: Government Printer 1883. First Edition. Hardcover. Adelaide Government Printer 1883 1883 1883 and 1884. Foolscap folio four reports 3 4 2 and 3 pages. Bound together in recent cloth with titling on the front cover; a tiny tear to the top edge throughout with the top margin of the first page slightly discoloured; excellent copies. South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 53 53A 54 and 54A of 1883-84; only 670 copies of each of the last three reports were published. Although these reports are numbered consecutively the periods covered are the last quarter of 1882 and the last three quarters of 1883; there is no report for the first quarter of 1883 probably because of the departure of the long-serving Government Resident Edward Price in that period. The usual pastoral mining and agricultural reports are enlivened in the last paper by Acting Government Resident Gilbert McMinn's detailed account of his success in finding Stuart's marked tree at his last camp near the mouth of the Mary River. This discovery removed 'the last shadow of doubt in connection with the great explorer's achievement' brought on by Stuart's mistaken belief that he was following the Adelaide River. ‎Tenders for Survey in Northern Territory . Tenders for Survey of Land in the Northern Territory; together with Report on Same by Surveyor-General‎

‎Adelaide: Government Printer 1868. Very Good. Adelaide Government Printer 1868. Foolscap folio 8 pages plus copies of two enclosures with the tender forms: a folding plan showing the proposed system of surveying sections approximately 260 315 mm and a large folding colour map 'Sketch Map of the North Territory Country in the vicinity of Adam Bay constructed by J.W.O. Bennett Draughtsman from data and instructions furnished by the Hon. B.T. Finniss L.Col. V.M.F. Govt. Resident Northern Territory. Showing approximately the tracks of the various explorers of the N.T. and the locality of the gold producing district discovered by Mr F.H. Litchfield in September 1865' 515 595 mm. Four small holes in the left-hand margin where stab-sewn when bound now neatly disbound; light marginal foxing to the text and folding plan with light waterstains to the leading edge of the last leaf; the folding map is foxed confined mainly to the wide unprinted margins and blank areas of the printed surface and there are light waterstains along portions of the top and leading edges; notwithstanding a very good copy of a very rare item. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 100 of 1868-69. It contains full details of the nine tenders for the survey of 420000 acres of land in the Northern Territory together with a report on them by George Goyder the Surveyor-General. He saw fit to consider seriously only one of the tenders and his concluding remarks suggest the ultimate course of action: 'it only remains to be considered whether an efficient party organized and equipped by the Government and the additional information gained thereby would not be infinitely preferable to the bare local description of the country actually operated on by the contractors'. The very detailed map may be seen as a monument to Bennett who returned with Goyder's party only to meet his death by spearing on 29 May 1869. Government Printer unknown‎
