Blind-ruled blue cloth lightly rubbed and very slightly flecked; front flyleaf offset; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper unevenly sunned and a little creased chipped and torn with a diamond shape presumably where the price label was excised from the spine. With the ownership signature of Dr Edith Ulrica 'Rica' Hubbe 1885-1967 dated March 1930. Rica maintained a correspondence with an array of Adelaide notables; 'including letters from 'Ray' and Phyllis Cilento and Doris Simpson'. The State Library of South Australia holds 'papers relating to her career as a doctor particularly during her time at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London'. PRG 1415/21 National Library of Australia. Loosely inserted is a large newspaper clipping folded three times and slightly sunned; an obituary of Sir Grafton Elliot Smith 1871-1937 by the author. Frederic Wood Jones 1879-1954 'anatomist naturalist and anthropologist . The foundation of his work in anthropology was laid when granted leave as demonstrator at the 'London' he obeyed a summons from Sir Grafton Elliot Smith professor of anatomy Cairo to join the archaeological survey of Nubia made urgent because the raising in height of the Aswan Dam would soon flood important sites. Elliot Smith had academic duties in Cairo and after a few weeks training Wood Jones was left as his deputy to examine in the trying conditions of desert camps the human relics from thousands of burials of widely ranging antiquity. The quality of his work won Elliot Smith's admiration and their results were published in the second volume of "The Archaeological Survey of Nubia: Report for 1907-1908" Cairo 1910. Wood Jones then gained experience as an academic anatomist through teaching posts at the medical schools of the London St Thomas's and the Royal Free hospitals and at the University of Manchester . in 1927 he accepted an invitation to the Rockefeller chair of physical anthropology at the University of Hawaii. There he wrote "The Matrix of the Mind" Honolulu 1928 with the psychologist S. D. Jones with the view to decide upon boring operations for water' 555 × 705 mm. Drop-title sewn as issued; minimal expert infill to the bottom corner of the first leaf; small blank corner piece of the map slightly creased; an excellent copy. The map embraces the entire extent of the Nullarbor Plain within South Australia covering 'an area of 16500 square miles . with a complete description of the country from the coast to the route taken by Mr Ernest Giles on his exploration trip to Perth'. It also includes 'Professor Tate's track shewn in red' presumably relating to Ralph Tate's travels there resulting in his lengthy paper The Natural History of the Country around the Head of the Great Australian Bight in the 'Transactions . of the Philosophical Society of Adelaide South Australia for 1878-9': see McLaren 15803. The journal 'gives a minutely detailed description of the country passed over . It will be seen that this hitherto comparatively unexplored country has been thoroughly examined. I found that in many important particulars the surmises in previous reports respecting this country were not borne out'. No less interesting is the account of the discovery of the waggon and last campsite of Fairie and Woolley who died of thirst north of Eucla two years earlier.
