Octavo 182 30 advertisements pages plus 6 lithographed plates of farm machinery by James Martin & Co. and 17 albumen paper carte-de-visite photographs individually mounted on tipped-in captioned leaves. Blind-decorated maroon cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover with a later gilt-lettered cloth title-label along the spine originally untitled; cloth a little flecked slightly sunned on the spine and a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities; some mounts lightly cockled as ever a production flaw; a few trifling signs of use; basically an excellent copy internally fine with the photographs in superb condition. A rare and desirable item attested to by the provenance of this copy: it has the armorial bookplate of Charles Glover on the pastedown and the blind-stamp of Sir Thomas Ramsay on the flyleaf 'T.M.R. Library of T.M. Ramsay'. Ferguson 11744; Holden 70. Holden's entry is more accurate and informative although the photographs may vary slightly between copies. The photograph facing page 16 in this copy is a portrait of Dr Nott rather than 'Frankel's Hotel' as called for in Holden facing page 17. Two other photographs are less-common variant images of the same subject: these are 'Fotheringham's Cordial Factory' facing page 57 and 'Stewart's Music Emporium' facing page 96. These variations notwithstanding two separate editions were produced: one in wrappers with advertisements on the verso of the front cover and on both sides of the rear cover without photographs but with the lithographs not noted by Ferguson; the other in gilt-lettered cloth without the cover advertisements containing 17 mounted photographs plus the lithographs. Both contain 30 pages of advertisements at the rear. <p>Rare in any state and in our view the version on offer is one of the more important and interesting photographically illustrated books produced in Australia. 'The handbook is illustrated with a number of views by Mr J. Taylor the local photographic artist representing the most important edifices and establishments in town' Holden quoting a contemporary review. The frontispiece is a portrait of John McKinlay 1819-1872; there are 14 pages devoted to him he married a Gawler woman in the early 1850s and was based in the town until his death. Justice is not done to the other photographs in describing them prosaically as 'the most important edifices and establishments in town'. Without exception signs of life and day-to-day activities flesh out the images and most of the businesses - butcher shop photographic studio cordial factory furnishing warehouse music emporium - feature well-stocked windows or yards and numerous staff members or customers. Holden reproduces two interesting ones including perhaps the best the butcher shop captioned merely 'Hodgson & Clements' but there are wonderful vignettes in many others. Not least of these are the horse-drawn tram in front of the 'Commercial Bank' and the ornate hearse outside 'F. Fowler's Furnishing Warehouse'. <p>While we are on the subject of death one chapter stands out. Among those to be expected say on 'Horticultural and Agricultural Progress. Gardens around Gawler' or 'The Humbug Society. Flam! Bam! Sham!' or 'The Streets - Number of Businesses - Description of Hotels' there is Chapter XI: 'The Neville and Adamson Tragedy'. Its thirteen pages describe in great detail the events surrounding the double suicide 'and its romantic accomplishment' of Neville and his partner Adamson. 'It is universally believed that Neville was the leading spirit in the suicide and so strong was Adamson's affection love friendship or whatever it may be termed for his companion that he consented to take that final leap in the dark in the wine cellar with him to visit that "bourne whence none return"'. Notes & Condition: Recounting his visit to Easter Island in April and May 1952, the widely travelled author presents a lively account of the lesser-known history of slavery and slave-driven industries which nearly devastated the famous volcanic island, including the especially ruinous guano industry raid of 1862. [In 1862, Peruvian slavers made a ruthless raid on Rapa Nui and took about a thousand islanders - including the king - to work the guano deposits on Peru's Chincha Islands. The hardships and oppressions endured by the Chinese laborers who were employed in digging guano have been descrbed as a system of the worst kind of slavery.] In contrast, he also discusses the political and economic situation at the time of his visit, including the merino sheep industry, artisans retaining one ancient tradition, and British-led efforts to support the social well-being of the inhabitants which had been terminated for political reasons by the Chilean government in 1953. Following a firsthand description of the moai monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people, and remarks on the Bird-man cult, Luke concludes by revealing that the Commonwealth was considering establishing an air route from Australia to Chile, including the construction of an air strip on Easter Island. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Sir Harry Charles Luke KCMG GCStJ (born Harry Charles Lukach) (1884-1969) was an official in the British Colonial Office. He served in Barbados, Cyprus, Transcaucasia, Sierra Leone, Palestine, Malta, the British Western Pacific Territories and Fiji. He wrote books on several of these countries. The Chincha Islands, or Islas Chincha, are a group of three small islands 21 km (13 mi) off the southwest coast of Peru, to which they belong, near the town of Pisco. They were of interest for their extensive guano deposits, but the supplies were mostly exhausted by 1874. Peru began the export of guano (droppings of seabirds, bats, and seals) in 1840, using slave labour. Spain, not having recognized Peru's independence (until 1879), and desiring the guano profits, occupied the islands in April 1864, setting off the Chincha Islands War (1864-1866).

'These papers are written solely for private distribution amongst relatives and special friends; and as my family is rather numerous and dispersed the necessity arises of having them printed'. That being said copies of this original printing are now rare nearly a century and a half later. <p>Marshall MacDermott 1791-1877 arrived in Adelaide in 1846 and after nearly three worthy and earnest decades here penned these memoirs decidedly brief when it comes to Australian content. Up until page 35 he reminiscences about his 22 years in the British army. He chose Western Australia as his future residence and arrived there in June 1830. Over the last eighteen pages he recounts his six years on the land and ten years in banking in WA then his eleven years 'as a bank manager three years as a merchant; four years in Parliament . and lastly over ten years administering the laws in Local Courts' in SA. This copy is inscribed to 'Percival Randolph Stow from his affectionate grandfather' and signed by the author. Stow a son of Judge Randolph Stow was the second husband of Catherine Stow Katie Langloh Parker. Loosely inserted is a 1941 newspaper clipping containing a brief biography of the author an 1829 pioneer of Western Australia before settling in South Australia in 1846; he died in 1877. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the title page to 'Charlotte de S. Dutton with kind regards' and signed by the author. MacDermott an 1829 pioneer of Western Australia before settling in South Australia in 1846 died in 1877. <p>The provenance is most interesting: Charlotte de S. Dutton was the widow of William Hampden Dutton 1805-1849; her mother's maiden name was Da Silva. In 1849 William's brother Francis Stacker Dutton 1818-1877 married MacDermott's daughter Caroline. The Duttons and their pastoral property Anlaby were household names in South Australia for generations; to put them into context 'While working at Anlaby in 1842 Francis had discovered with Captain Charles Bagot the Kapunda copper mine' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'.
