Quarter red cloth and pictorial cream papered boards printed in black and red; a very fine copy. Muir 6266 not identifying the author. The dedication to this pseudonymous work is by 'Aunt Sissie' whom we have identified as Lavinia Mary Scammell 1859-1915 the second of twelve children of Luther Scammell of Fauldings fame. This attribution appears not to have been made before. The manuscript is held by the State Library of South Australia in PRG 119: Papers of Mrs A.M. Madden. Item 112 in the list of papers is 'Manuscript of "Laughter and Life: a tale for the young" by Lavinia Mary Scammell. 1912. 3 cm. Typescript. Written by Sissie Scammell Red Gum Blossom with a dedication to her nieces and nephews 12 April 1912. This was published that year as "A little bit of laughter and life for the young" by Hussey & Gillingham and was set in Adelaide. Each chapter is sewn together and housed inside a red covered album. Cartes couleurs en hors texte et superbes illustrations par L.Breton, Adrien Marie, Gauthier Saint-Elme. Petit frottement au bas de l'illustration de couveture. Infimes frottis aux coins et aux mors. Intérieur frais, proche du parfait. Rare édition originale sous cette forme, surtout dans un tel état de fraicheur.

Broadsheet printed in black and white single-sided a little light creasing browned along right edge. 38.5 x 26.2 cm A special issue produced by the news agency Jiji Shashin to celebrate the arrival of a group of young Australian female students who visited Japan on a three month goodwill tour organised by the Young Australia League in 1935. The single page news sheet features a large photograph of the 33-stong tour group whose average age was under 19 on board their ship as it arrived in Japan. The chaperone of the tour was Mrs. A Lodewyckx wife of a Melbourne University professor who was described in the Australian media as "one of the most travelled women in Australia". The Young Australia League had been founded in 1905 by Jack Simons and Lionel Boas to promote education through travel. It had a strongly nationalist orientation. Mrs. Lodewyckx had also visited Germany and expressed her admiration for Hitler. <br> <br>The image shows the party upon arrival in Japan. Light blue cloth printed in purple later rebacked retaining the original backstrip now sunned; small bump to the head of the rear board; a very good copy internally excellent. Loosely inserted is a photograph mounted on card flush-cut to 203 � 152 mm of a member of the 2/10th identified on the verso as QX 32901 Private G.J. Porter see the nominal roll page 447. The photograph is inscribed in ink by him 'All my love All my life Gordon. 1946'; the inscription is a little faded and the image has a few surface scratches. Bound in at the rear is a photocopy of the 14-page supplement prepared by Charles Stening for the 1984 facsimile edition; it contains additional material and corrections to this first edition.
