Peade SA40: one of only 51 copies. Rare even in facsimile form and not generally recognized as being an important variant. Not even the authorised bibliography by Peade records the fact that the original from which this facsimile edition was produced contained often on interleaved blanks extensive manuscript additions attributed to Schurmann. Henry John Driscoll was born in Adelaide in 1857; his obituary appears in 'The Advertiser' on 4 September 1916 and he was 59 at the time of his death. The novel deals with 'pioneering life in the Riverina and the dry country nearer the centre and though not cleverly constructed contains some authentic - and sometimes diverting - episodes of station life' Depasquale. Blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover a little marked and lightly worn; top edge gilt others uncut; folding map a little creased and torn with some clear tape repairs to the verso; mild signs of age and use; a very good copy. The author was 'Fourteen years Sub-collector of Customs at Port Darwin'. The six-page preface is by Ernest Whitington an Adelaide journalist. Provenance: 'Stephen King "Calta Wurlie" May 1908' is written in ink on the front free endpaper. Stephen King Jr 1841-1915 sketcher and surveyor accompanied John McDouall Stuart on the first transcontinental expedition in 1861-63. He later worked as a surveyor under George Goyder in Darwin and on the Overland Telegraph. Chapter XV: 'Stuart's Tree' has a dogear corner on leaf 275/6 which contains details of Stuart's graveside obelisk and makes reference to the Overland Telegraph: 'Survivors of the expedition to-day say that the telegraph scheme was constantly in the mind of the great explorer and he loved to predict that some of his party would live to see consummated the bridging of the continent not merely by telegraph but by railway'. King was the last survivor of the eleven members of this famous expedition. 'Calta Wurlie' was the name of King's house in the Adelaide suburb of Kensington; it still stands today. Loosely inserted news-cutting "The Case for the Case" dated 19th September 1934 showing the casket made of local wood which will contain the Secession petition . which will be presented to the King by the Secession delegate". A beautifully bound copy in near fine condition. The 1934 'case for secession' failed and support for the Dominion League in the Western Australian community dwindled. The secession debate was reignited briefly in 1974 by mining magnate Lang Hancock with the formation of the Westralian Secession Movement. The movement was sparked in reaction to the centralist policy of the Whitlam Labor Government. However the movement failed to achieve prominence due to the strong economy at the time and disappeared as quickly as it emerged. Harrop 1st edition. Half leather. The author travelled from Oman on the Arabian Sea in a ship similar to those used 1,000 years ago in an attempt to follow Sinbad's voyages from "A Thousand and One Nights". He travelled to India, Sri Lanka and across the Indian Ocean to Sumatra and the Malacca Straits to the China Seas to Canton in a boat that was a replica of an Arab sailing ship that was used a thousand years ago. It is one of the most remarkable sailing stories of the twentieth century. This copy includes a copy of the author's article in National Geographic (July 1982), 'In the Wake of Sinbad', a 40 page article with many colored photos, map, and is complementary to the book. Its included as part of the entire issue of the National Geographic for that month.

Quarto iv 123 pages with a few illustrations plus 19 plates and a folding map. Cloth lightly marked and scuffed; top edge a little foxed; free endpapers lightly tanned; an excellent copy. Lauri Sheard accompanied Charles Mountford as his assistant on an Adelaide University Field Expedition to Ernabella the Musgraves Mann Ranges Ayers Rock and Mt Olga in June-October 1940. He was eighteen at the time; he died in an air crash on active service over New Guinea in 1942. <p>We have previously handled a copy with a loosely-inserted printed note from the publisher: 'Appendices 2 and 3 which are referred to in the Journal have not been included. Cloth slightly flecked and marked and lightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities; new endpapers; the map was detached at one time and is now a little foxed and creased with three small tape-stains at one end and the author's name written in ink in the margin at the other end; trifling signs of age and use; a very good copy. 8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; xxvii, [i], 331 pp, frontis (portrait) with tissue guard, 32 plates mostly from photos, tables, index. original blue cloth, gilt title lettering on spine and cover, lightly rubbed at edges, small endpaper signature, near fine, clean and unmarked. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Shelford, who was curator of the Sarawak Museum and with Oxford University Museum, was an entomologist by training, made expeditions into the interior of Borneo to study the head-hunting tribes and the natural history. The book contains detailed chapters on natural history, birds, insects, mimicry in nature, animal life of the shores, natives of Borneo, reptiles, etc. Very nicely illustrated, including of a head hunting expedition, buildings in Sarawack, Kuching. The work was edited from the manuscript & notes by Edward Poulton after Sheldon's early death due to a tropical disease.
