History of the First Bushmen's Club in the Australian Colonies established at Adelaide South Australia. Compiled from various sources and furnishing in detail its origin and progress up to the present year 1872; also miscellaneous readings letters etc.

Octavo viii 9-408 pages the last 8 being advertisements plus 2 frontispiece lithographs 'Present Bushmen's Home' and 'Proposed Bushmen's Home'. Original flush-cut dark green cloth with the short title in gilt on the front cover; cloth lightly marked and rubbed at the extremities with slight wear in a couple of places; spine a little sunned; inner hinges cracked but firm; endpapers a little marked with some scuffing and silverfish damage to the front flyleaf; small stain to the bottom edge bleeding very slightly into some bottom margins; very occasional foxing; three smallish areas on pages 167-70 lost to silverfish with two patches affecting some 25 words of text now supplied on an insert; a very good copy. A note dated January 1879 in pencil on the flyleaf gives some details of the anonymous author a cousin of the somewhat more famous Victor. Ferguson 10643 recording only 'blue morocco cloth boards'. 'By 1866 a ravaging northern drought accelerated the need to succour bush workers who were often victims of their own excesses and were preyed upon between jobs. Hugo pressed for a "bushmen's home" like a seamen's home as a quiet sober refuge. Opposition came from those who saw it as a squatters' movement but his canvassing bushmen's subscriptions and philanthropic support enabled the home to open in Whitmore Square Adelaide in May 1870' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. [Illuminated Address]
A very large albumen silver photograph reproducing an illuminated address presented to John Dunn Esq. J.P. of Mount Barker 1802-1904 member of Parliament and prominent wheat merchant and miller in early colonial South Australia by the workers of J. Dunn & Co. on the occasion of his retirement in May 1889
Very Good. Image size approximately 325 × 263 mm on the original ruled mount visible surface 430 × 365 mm framed and glazed. The photograph is beginning to lift slightly at two corners; mount slightly soiled at one corner; frame a little scuffed and marked; overall in excellent condition. On the reverse is the paper label of 'S. Solomon Photographer 51 Rundle Street Adelaide'. The address the original of which was illustrated and illuminated by W.G.P. Joyner gives an indication of the scale and importance of Dunn's enterprises: '. by your perseverance energy and strict integrity you have overcome all obstacles and today you have the satisfaction of leaving to your successors the largest milling and wheat business in the Southern Hemisphere'. <p>An article in the 'South Australian Chronicle' for 8 June 1889 describes the circumstances of the presentation of the address and also describes the original in detail. 'The address is the work of Mr. Joyner and is one of his most artistic productions . The words and the signatures which number 105 being those of most of the leading employés are situated in the centre while all around are well executed paintings of a number of the mills belonging to the firm taken from photographs. In the left-hand corner there is a painting of the site of the original mill at Hay Valley . On the top are Mr. Dunn's residence at Mount Barker 'The Laurels' and the Dunn Memorial Church which that gentleman presented to the residents of Mount Barker while the right hand corner is occupied by a view of the firm's stores and offices in Freeman-street Adelaide now Gawler Place. On the left side of the address there are views of the mills at Wilmington the old mill at Port Adelaide and at Mount Barker and two representations of the new Roller Eclipse mill at Port Adelaide. On the other side the Nairne mill takes precedence while underneath it is the gem of the collection the works at Port Pirie including some of the shipping of the port with the railway in front. The Port Augusta and Bridgewater mills are represented and an excellent portrait of Mr. Dunn is also included in the set.' <p>A number of the source photographs are to be found in a Dunn family photograph album now held by the State Library of South Australia PRG 1485/3. Dunn's entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' records that 'he retired in 1889 and died at Mount Barker on 13 October 1894. The firm's eleven mills five with the most modern machinery then represented an investment of £150000. They annually had an export trade of some 20000 tons of flour to Britain Western Australia New South Wales and South Africa some 400 employees and a payment to farmers of £500000'. unknown

Scott Unley S.A.'; the caption is inkstamped at the head of the recto and the verso is printed for use as a postcard. Tiny surface chip and crease to the top right-hand corner-tip; in excellent condition. Charles Scott 1878-1928 is 'Listed as photographer at 21A Waymouth Street Adelaide in directories from 1909 to 1915 his "private residence" being given as 10 Grace Street Goodwood Park' Photohistory SA website. The Art Gallery of SA gives the date '1903-04' for this image in its collection; this example with the address in Unley an Adelaide suburb near Goodwood Park would appear to have been produced prior to Scott's relocation to Waymouth Street. <p>The Adelaide 'Chronicle' for 8 September 1932 quotes a letter from F.W. Marsh formerly of Oodnadatta reminiscing about this portrait a copy of which hung 'in the strangers' room at Tattersalls Club. Well Jacky Rags when about three years old came with two other black boys early one morning to my place in Oodnadatta. When I asked what they wanted I was told that his father Charlie had killed his mother that night with a boomerang and that Jacky had come to me for protection. I kept him for a long time but when he was about 15 years old he was persuaded to ask me to allow him to go for a spell meaning he wanted to go to the camp in the bush. I let him go and later found that the older blacks had performed certain ceremonies on him from which he never recovered. He developed consumption and died a year or so later. I think living on the whites' food for so many years and then going to the bush where those to be initiated are starved until they are very weak so that the ceremony can be performed easily led to his early death. The name Jacky Rags was given him because whatever clothes he received in a day or two they would be in rags. He was a good lad'. Chas P. Scott unknown

Tiny crease to the bottom left-hand corner-tip; in excellent condition. We purchased this item with a similar portrait of a young Indigenous boy captioned 'Jacky - Oodnadatta' blindstamped with the photographer's details 'Chas P. Scott Unley S.A.'. The Art Gallery of SA dates that image '1903-04'. We have no hesitation in attributing this uncredited image and vintage print to him. Charles Scott 1878-1928 is 'Listed as photographer at 21A Waymouth Street Adelaide in directories from 1909 to 1915 his "private residence" being given as 10 Grace Street Goodwood Park' Photohistory SA website. We presume Scott worked from the address in Unley an Adelaide suburb near Goodwood Park prior to his relocation to Waymouth Street. Chas P. Scott unknown

He concludes: 'Mr James's book exposes all that is evil in the management of the experiment of colonizing on the new plan . and in order that both sides may be heard the reader may consult Mr Stephens's hypercritical and somewhat captious reply'. [Killalpaninna]
A photograph of the departure from the Barossa Valley of the first Lutheran missionaries to Lake Killalpaninna in northern South Australia
An original and probably vintage albumen silver photograph 103 × 150 mm mounted on thin card captioned in pencil on the verso 'The first mission to the Mission Station'. There is a light 30 mm oblique crack to the surface of the image near the centre of the left-hand side and a thin blue ink line in a similar position on the right-hand side about the same length overall extending some 20 mm on to the image; a few other light marks and creases to the mount do not detract from what is essentially very good condition all round. The party consisted of Missionaries Johann Goessling and Ernst Homann and two lay-helpers Hermann Vogelsang and Johann Jacob. They set out from Langmeil Tanunda church on Tuesday 9 October 1866 with two large covered wagons and seven horses. This image along with the full details of the epic journey and the first attempt to establish a mission among the Dieri Diyari in the Coopers Creek area appears in 'A Work of Love and Sacrifice. Some light creases to the extremities and a few tiny nicks to the leading edge of the first leaf; a very good copy. The pictorial front cover is signed in ink by Vivien Leigh slightly faded and Sir Laurence Olivier. At that time they were married; the tour was a great success but stressful and exhausting and it put the marriage under considerable pressure. Extra-marital affairs and Leigh's increasing physical and mental ill-health tuberculosis and bi-polar disorder eventually led the couple to divorce in 1960. Gilt-pictorial vellum top edge gilt others uncut and unopened; one opening slightly tanned from the ribbon marker; a fine copy in the original plain paper dustwrapper a little sunned and torn with the title added later in ink on the spine. Number 190 of only 200 copies numbered and signed by Thomas Gill. This is a deluxe enlarged edition of a work first published as the Supplement to Volume 11 of the Proceedings of the RGSSA in the same year. The extra material includes text maps and facsimile documents. <p>We have only encountered the dustwrapper once before and the small oval label of the 'Government Printing Office Adelaide S.A.' gilt on red cloth mounted on the rear pastedown is uncommon in our experience. Loosely inserted are two interesting pieces of ephemera indicating that this was one of several copies offered for sale by ballot to members of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia South Australian Branch in 1978. The Society was the original publisher and it purchased the author's collection after his death in 1923 so these retained copies - released nearly 70 years after the work was published - could have come from either source. A large vintage photograph of the unveiling of the monument to Colonel William Light in Adelaide on 21 June 1905
Fine. A gelatin silver photograph 237 × 307 mm unmounted as issued: in fine condition. The ink-stamp of the photographer 'J. Gazard 111 King Wm. St. Adelaide' is on the verso together with a pencilled caption reading: 'June 21 1905. Unveiling of the Monument to Colonel Light the founder of Adelaide in Light Square Adelaide where his remains are buried'. Light Square became the burial place of Colonel William Light in 1839; the original monument erected over his grave in 1843 became damaged and was replaced. 'The new monument which still stands today consisted of a theodolite placed on a tall column. It was unveiled on the 21 June 1905 to a large crowd that included "old colonists" who had witnessed Light's funeral 66 years previously seated on either side of the monument. Sir Samuel Way addressed the crowd reinforcing Light's legend by recalling the achievements and adventures of the founder of Adelaide. The Mayor of Adelaide Mr Theodore Bruce then proceeded with the unveiling of the monument' 'Adelaidia' website. This impressive image captures it all. unknown

[Lion Brewing and Malting Company]
The detailed register of approximately 60 hotels owned or leased by the Lion Brewing and Malting Company Limited Jerningham Street North Adelaide compiled between the 1880s and 1920s

A folio ledger 330 × 205 mm with information on the hotels on approximately 130 pages plus a further 90 or so letters documents notes floor plans and maps pinned to leaves or loosely inserted. Half calf and cloth; minor signs of external wear; trifling signs of handling to some of the inserted paperwork; overall in excellent condition. The Lion Brewing and Malting Company in North Adelaide was founded in 1884 and floated in 1888 the same year as the South Australian Brewing Company Limited 'in order to secure the brewing hotel and property assets of Beaglehole and Johnston . The company owned many hotels in South Australia' Wikipedia. 'The Register' on 24 April 1914 reported that 'At the Lion Brewery North Adelaide which has been in existence for many years the last brew of beer has been made. The company who owns it has arranged with the Walkerville Brewing Company to supply all its houses in future and a contract has been entered into with the Lion Company to supply the other with malt'. When Lion was eventually taken over by the SA Brewing Company in 1973 'The Canberra Times' 1 August 1973 noted that 'Lion's name is misleading as it operates in the hotel trade and not in the brewing field. It owns 25 hotel freeholds in SA and recently agreed to pay $550000 for the 50% interest of the estate of F.S. Sison deceased in six hotels'. When both these companies - the Lion and the SA Brewing Company - entered the industry in the 1880s 'it was common practice for breweries wishing to protect and expand their trade to do so by obtaining control over as many retail outlets as their finances would permit. The tenants of theses outlets hotels were required by contract to stock only the products of the brewer owner. Investment of hotels therefore was conceived and practised essentially as an aid to protect and expand brewery output. The return by way of rents was of secondary importance and was usually much below the yields available from alternative invests' Michael Cudmore: 'History of the South Australian Brewing Company Limited' page 33. The Trade Practices Act 1974 made illegal this very lucrative 'tied house' system. This unique register gathers together in one volume a wealth of fascinating detail relating to this system pertaining to approximately 60 hotels across the state. Country localities include Elliston Hamley Bridge Goolwa Jamestown Kingston Maitland Narracoorte Port Augusta Port Lincoln Rivoli Bay Saddleworth and Stockport. Many of the city and suburban hotels are still familiar names: the Bath Britannia British Cremorne Cross Keys Land of Promise Mitcham Inn Oxford Royal Oak Talbot Union Walker's Arms and Wheatsheaf. hardcover

One map on four sheets printed surface of each sheet 703 × 955 mm when joined together the sheets form a map measuring around 5' × 7' in imperial terms; the sheets are numbered 1-4 left to right top then bottom with the publisher's reference 'AHQ / AO-12 / 0221' printed in the left-hand bottom margin. Four single sheets as issued; minimal cockling and a few trifling blemishes to some unprinted margins; an excellent set. The states are printed en bloc in different colours; Tasmania appears on the third sheet as an inset 239 × 239 mm. This very large and detailed map shows 'homesteads minor settlements Aboriginal reserves stock routes highways principal and other roads railways principal civil aerodromes' Trove with relief shown by spot heights. We have recently unearthed a small quantity of these maps. Purchasers of the full set may avail themselves of a special offer on a first-come first-served basis: additional copies of the fourth sheet the south-eastern portion may be had for $100 each. 4 items. A three-colour map printed surface 246 × 424 mm mounted on plain paper with the two original vertical folds barely visible; minimal light foxing; in excellent condition. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen. Jahrgang 1872 Tafel 22' is printed in the top margin outside the printed border. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen' Petermann's Geographical Communications founded by August Heinrich Petermann in 1855 ceased publication only as recently as 2004. It was 'the oldest German-language journal for geography in which all major geographical discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries were published' Wikipedia. About J.M. Gilmore we have unearthed nothing and when even such an indefatigable bibliographer as Ian McLaren doesn't record him you're definitely made a discovery. The map is much more informative. Gilmore made two trips in the Channel Country in south-west Queensland one in January to March 1871 the other in September-October 1871. The routes are marked in red on the map. A full-colour map printed surface 610 × 510 mm cut into 20 panels mounted on linen as issued folded and mounted in the publisher's gilt-decorated cloth case external dimensions 190 × 118 mm. Slight wear to the corners of the case with minimal restoration to the spine; light erasures to the pastedown and paper-lined verso of the exposed panel of the folded map; the map is lightly marked in one spot but is essentially in fine condition. There are two interesting rubber-stamps on one cloth panel that of 'W.C. Rigby Newsagent Adelaide' and 'Archiv. Provinciae Austriae S. J.'; the erasures mentioned above appear to have removed a couple of examples of the Jesuit Archive stamp. Philips' Authentic Maps of the Australian Colonies Number 6 according to the information printed on the front pastedown. Tooley 974 basic details of the map only not noting the Travelling Maps series. Pertinent details printed on the map that provide evidence of the date of publication include 'Burke & Wills 1860-61' and the locations where King and the bodies of Gray Burke and Wills were found King was found in September 1861. The latest reference to Stuart is 'Stuart's Route 1860' presumably his fifth expedition from November 1860 to September 1861. The entire region of South Australia west of about 133 degrees east longitude and north of the coastline is described as 'Unexplored Country added to South Australia in 1861'; the Act to annex this land was passed in Great Britain in August 1861. Historians of Australian bookselling will know that William Charles Rigby commenced trading as a bookseller and newsagent in Adelaide in late 1859. George Philip hardcover

He recounts his adventures running away to Sea living in the Bush adventuring with Robert Louis Stevenson both books surviving cannibals tramping through Fiji Samoa Tahiti the Marquesas and the Australian gold fields. The sequel memoir focuses again on adventures with Robert Louis Stevenson songs he composed voyages to Honolulu and the Territory of Hawaii Japan and recounts time with an exceptional Sierra Leone African violinist. Safroni-Middleton 1873-1950 was a British composer violnist harpist writer and astronomer and composed the “Imperial Echoes†theme music which for years was played on the “Radio Newsreel†of the BBC. He would also later pen the science fiction novel “Under Many Names†1937 describing the adventures of his hero traveling through the stars via thought waves to meet an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.
