‎Le programme annoncé par le titre développé de ce volumineux ouvrage est scrupuleusement respecté. S'agissant d'un point de vue extérieur — regard porté par un étranger — sur le monde polynésien, cette somme constitue aujourd'hui encore une source de toute première importance. C'est, en partie au moins, que le travail de Moerenhout n'est pas celui d'une compilateur, ni même celui d'un simple observateur, aussi vigilant soit-il. Moerenhout en effet a pris une part active à la vie des îles, dans tous les domaines : politique, affaires religieuses, commerce, activités culturelles. Il a connu personnellement tous les acteurs de cette histoire. Il a beaucoup vu donc et, pour la perspective historique, il a su écouter. Il disposait enfin d'une sensibilité ouverte qui s'exprime, en bien des passages, avec une vigueur rare dans ce type d'ouvrages. Son témoignage sur les îles est précieux : c'est celui d'un homme qui a personnellement beaucoup navigué de l'une à l'autre (Pâques, Pitcairn, Gambier, Tuamotu, Australes, Iles-du-Vent, Iles-sous-le-Vent) à bord de ces fameuses goélettes dont le souvenir est resté vivace. Tous ceux qui, par la suite, ont écrit sur la Polynésie ont largement emprunté à Moerenhout ; Gauguin et Segalen entre autres. "L'ouvrage se divise en trois parties. Dans la première, sous le titre de Géographie, je présente l'ensemble de mes observations les plus importantes, faites sur les lieux, dans le cours des voyages successifs dont il a été question plus haut. La seconde présentera, sous le titre d'Ethnographie, toutes les remarques que mon long séjour dans ces contrées, et mes relations avec les habitants m'ont mis à portée de recueillir, relativement à leur langue, à leur religion et à leurs mœurs. La troisième, enfin, résumera, sous le titre d'Histoire, les faits les plus intéressants qui s'y sont passés, dans l'ordre et avec les développements plus ou moins étendus que j'ai pu leur donner, en raison des renseignements rassemblés sur ce sujet, soit d'après des ouvrages déjà publiés, soit de la bouche des chefs et autres personnes du pays, les plus dignes de foi sur cette matière". Te Puni has a white beard and white hair and carries a mere in his right hand. The portrait is from Barraud's 'New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive'. 8 3/4 x 14" matted.
