2 ouvrages reliés en un volume in-8 (195 x 124 mm), plein veau marbré de l'époque, dos lisse orné de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, pièces de titre de maroquin bordeaux, triples filets d'encadrement sur les plats, roulette sur les coupes, tranches jaspées. 1- Édition originale, rare. Le premier essai politique de Robespierre, alors jeune avocat âgé de 26 ans, qu’il composa en réponse à un concours ouvert par la Société royale littéraire de Metz en 1784, et pour lequel il obtint une médaille d’or ainsi qu’un prix de 400 livres. En homme des Lumières disciple de Montesquieu et de Beccaria, sur un mode modéré mais en un style lyrique et enflammé qui sera sa marque, Robespierre critique l’arbitraire de la justice de son temps et soumet un plan de réforme de la justice pénale. Il propose de bannir le déshonneur imposé aux familles des condamnés, plaide pour la suppression de la confiscation de leurs biens, pour l’égalité devant le châtiment et pour que les bâtards puissent accéder à la condition de citoyen à part entière. (Martin & Walter, 29526/1). 2- Edition originale. L'essai, en tête du volume, composé par le juriste et académicien Pierre-Louis Lacretelle (1751-1824) fut couronné en même temps que celui de Robespierre. Devançant celui-ci, Lacretelle obtint le premier prix, Robespierre le second, mais on décida que la récompense serait la même. Si les deux mémoires comportaient "nombre d'idées semblables", de celui de Lacretelle, on vanta "la hauteur de ses considérations philosophiques et morales, la sagacité de son esprit, la justesse de ses idées et l’humanité de ses sentiments". En 1823, en publiant ses Œuvres complètes, Lacretelle revint sur cette rencontre avec Robespierre : "Rien, dans ce début, ne promettait le personnage qu’on a vu sept ans après. On pourrait croire qu’il s’ignorait encore lui-même. Il faut avoir vu toute une révolution pour savoir à quel point elle peut transformer un homme, ou plutôt développer en lui des poisons cachés et encore sans fermentation". Infimes accrocs à un mors. Très bel exemplaire, très frais, grand de marges, très bien relié à l'époque.

In-8 (201 x 117 mm), plein veau havane de l'époque, dos lisse orné de compartiments fleuronnés et cloisonnés, roulette dorée sur les mors, triple filet d'encadrement sur les plats, filet sur les coupes, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, gardes marbrées, (6), 71 p. Edition originale et unique de ce mémoire précurseur sur l’usage thérapeutique de l’opium, ses propriétés antalgiques et sédatives. L’auteur souligne également son efficacité dans le traitement des fièvres intermittentes et des maladies spasmodiques. Dans un examen pertinent des effets physiologiques liés à la prise d’opium, Charles Louis Berdot décrit les modifications de l’état de conscience: "l’imagination s’anime, la gaieté se déclare, quelque-fois le chagrin, l’irritabilité devient plus vive, la sensibilité s’accroît, les fonctions intellectuelles se dérangent, une espèce d’ivresse, d’extase délicieuse s’empare du malade..." (cf. p. 62). Issu d'une famille de médecins originaire de Montbéliard, médecin lui-même, l'auteur exerça en Alsace. Bel exemplaire très frais, imprimé sur beau papier, très bien relié à l’époque.

Copia praticamente nuova.

Paesaggi in Tavola, giudicati di Claudio Gelée con il testo di Giuseppe Antonio Guattani
In folio; (28) pp. e 10 magnifiche c. di tav. fuori testo in sanguigna opera di Claude Lorraine (Claudio di Lorena) ed incise da L. Carracciolo. Legatura coeva in mezza-tela con piatti foderati con bella carta marmorizzata. Antica firma d'appartenenza privata al margine basso del frontespizio. Qualche macchiolina di foxing, fra l’altro meno intense che negli altri, pochi, tipiche dell’opera, causate dalla qualità utilizzata nella stampa ma nel complesso esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Titolo manoscritto su fascetta al piatto anteriore. Prima ed unica edizione di questo magnifico volume che illustra questa raccolta di 10 magnifiche tavole. Le tavole sono minuziosamente descritte da dal celebre archeologo, scrittore, musicista, professore di Storia e di Mitologia, Giuseppe Antonio Guattani (Roma, 18 settembre 1748 – Roma, 29 dicembre 1830), che di illustri natali (il padre fu medico personale di tre pontefici), fu a lungo segretario perpetuo dell'Accademia di Belle Arti e dell'Accademia di Archeologia di Roma. A lui si deve una celebre descrizione dei monumenti romani. In quest’opera, il testo di Guattani affianca le 10 magnifiche tavole del grande pittore francese Claude Gellée (o Gelée) detto Lorrain, o anche Claudio Lorenese (Chamagne, 16 dicembre 1600 – Roma, 23 novembre 1682), che fu a lungo attivo a Roma e che insieme a Nicolas Poussin, è considerato il maestro del genere del paesaggio ideale. Lorraine elaborò la sua estetica sull’interpretazione classicistica della natura operata dai grandi pittori bolognesi, Annibale Carracci e Domenichino. Guattani racconta “Dieci tavole colorite a Tempera dall’immortale Claudio Lorenese sono state acquistate dal Sig.r Carlo Trebbj negoziante di oggetti d’arte in Roma. Così bella Decade ne sembra un tesoro per l’Arte del Paesaggio, formando una serie di Claudj, dove il trovarne uno a gran fortuna reca …”. La tavola con “Lotta in un Parco di Londra” riprende una scena di pugilato “Richiama tal combattimento l’antico Pugillato che Cesto non fosse; il quale esercizio non già esclusivamente, ma come in propria sede fiorisce tutt’ora nella Gran Bretagna, fino ad esserne scuola e maestranza”. Guattani, individua poi nelle seguenti tavole, un’ispirazione dalla Gerusalemme Liberata di Torquato Tasso, assegnando ad ognuna un titolo. Si vedono così le tavole: Erminia che dorme; Erminia ed il Pastore; Erminia alla Capanna; Si disegna il viaggio di Carlo e di Ubaldo; Carlo, Ubaldo ed il Mago; Ancelle di Armida con offerte; Armida con Ancelle Danzanti; Armida lascia per momenti Rinaldo; Liberazione di Rinaldo. Brossure editoriali azzurre con titolo e vignetta, impressa in nero al piatto anteriore di ogni volume. Bell'edizione, illustrata, di questo classico racconto di viaggio a due mani, composto dal drammaturgo francese, Victor-Joseph Étienne, called de Jouy (19 October 1764 - 4 September 1846), a lui si deve il libretto dell'opera "La Vestale" di Spontini e dallo scrittore francese, Jay Adolphe Francois Marie. Varie piccole fini incisioni nel testo. Qualche minimo foxing dovuto alla qualità della carta utilizzata e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione e completo delle brossure editoriali. Al piatto posteriore borchie in ferro. Esemplare stampato su speciale carta marcata appositamente realizzata dalla cartiere Milani di Fabriano. Le dorature della custodia, e dalla legatura sono realizzate in oro zecchino da "Arte del Libro" di Todi. Prima edizione di questa magnifica opera in tiratura limitata di 2499 esemplari numerati, il nostro è l'esemplare numero 28 (targa in metallo con il nome della copia dedicata al recto del piatto anteriore), dedicata alla storia del Granducato di Toscana. "Il volume, per la penna di illustri saggisti, storiografi e narratori, italiani e stranieri, ricostruisce e commemora virtù e vizi, glorie e miseri, fortune e sfortune delle due dinastie che regnarono in Toscana dal XVI al XIX secolo e che possono a giusta ragione essere considerate fra le più prestigiose d'Italia e d'Europa. Una ricchissima scelta iconografica illustra i saggi e le memorie, dando al libro il valore di un'opera d'insieme d'assoluto pregio storico che artistico". In mostra dipinti, sculture, disegni, stampe, arredi, provenienti da collezioni pubbliche e private italiane ed estere (circa cento opere provenienti dallo stesso Palazzo Reale di Pisa, dalla Galleria d'Arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti a Firenze, dal Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna, dal Museo di Palazzo Sternberg di Praga).
