Apparso per la prima volta nel 1607, l'atlante Mercator-Hondius-Mercator fu un successo a livello europeo, con edizioni pubblicate sia in latino che in diverse altre lingue. Le varie edizioni furono curate da Jodocus Hondius e poi da Jan Janssonius, e contenevano un numero crescente di mappe. "Shortly after the publication of the big folio-atlases the need was apparantly felt for a smaller-sized atlas, one that would be handier, and, above all, cheaper, so that a larger public might have access to the use of maps. The publication of the Atlas Minor appeared to be a great success for Hondius; the first Latin edition was in great demand. The copperplates of the first atlases minor were most almost certainly engraved by Jodocus Hondius himself. After 1621, the copperplates of the Atlas Minor were sold to a London editor. Firstly, they appeared in Purchas his Pilgrinies, printed in 1625 by William Stansby for Henry Featherstone. Next they were used for the translation of the Mercator-atlas, printed in small folio under the title Historia mundi, or Mercators atlas, by Thomas Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwight in 1635". Just one year after his first edition he published his Latin text Atlas Minor in collaboration with Jan Jansz. and Cormelis Claesz. The arrangement between these three is not understood clearly but Hondius is believed to have been the owner of the copperplates. Carta nautica stampata dall’Istituto Idrografico della Marina. Aggiornata al 1881. La storia dell'Istituto Idrografico della Marina inizia pochi anni dopo l'unificazione nazionale con la creazione a Livorno, nel 1875, dell'Ufficio Centrale per il Servizio Scientifico della Regia Marina, dal quale avrebbero dovuto dipendere Uffici Dipartimentali eredi delle funzioni di elaborazione cartografica proprie delle istituzioni preunitarie. Fu invece creato il solo Ufficio Dipartimentale di Genova, presso il Forte San Giorgio, che a sua volta lasciò il posto, nel 1872, dall'ente cartografico nazionale denominato Ufficio Idrografico della Regia Marina. Nel 1899 tale denominazione fu trasformata in quella attuale di Istituto Idrografico della Marina. L'istituto fu fondato con regio decreto il 26 dicembre 1872 e alla sua guida fu chiamato il capitano di fregata, matematico e idrografo Giovan Battista Magnaghi, con il compito di eseguire il rilievo idrografico dei mari italiani e di produrre la documentazione nautica nazionale. Nel dopoguerra, oltre a ricognizioni per procedere all'aggiornamento delle carte nautiche, venne realizzata una nuova rete di triangolazione costiera. Incisione su zinco, con margini, in buono stato di conservazione. Un volume in 8°, legatura '900 in Piena Tela con titolo oro al dorso, cc. 2 n.n., pp. LXIV, 417, (3) + pp. 4 aggiunte, contenenti "Sujets" ed invito alla sottoscrizione dell'opera di Jules Pasqualini "Histoire de Corse". Non è presente la carta geografica. Fioriture alle prime ed ultime carte, altrimenti buon esemplare del solo Primo Tomo di questa interessante opera in 2 Tomi.

Couverture restaurée, mouillure très claire dans la marge interne en début de volume, quelques rousseurs légères, petits manques de papier p. 103-104, 323-324 et 325-325 dans les coins, petites taches dans la marge de la p. 289, sinon bon état.
