Apparso per la prima volta nel 1607, l'atlante Mercator-Hondius-Mercator fu un successo a livello europeo, con edizioni pubblicate sia in latino che in diverse altre lingue. Le varie edizioni furono curate da Jodocus Hondius e poi da Jan Janssonius, e contenevano un numero crescente di mappe. "Shortly after the publication of the big folio-atlases the need was apparantly felt for a smaller-sized atlas, one that would be handier, and, above all, cheaper, so that a larger public might have access to the use of maps. The publication of the Atlas Minor appeared to be a great success for Hondius; the first Latin edition was in great demand. The copperplates of the first atlases minor were most almost certainly engraved by Jodocus Hondius himself. After 1621, the copperplates of the Atlas Minor were sold to a London editor. Firstly, they appeared in Purchas his Pilgrinies, printed in 1625 by William Stansby for Henry Featherstone. Next they were used for the translation of the Mercator-atlas, printed in small folio under the title Historia mundi, or Mercators atlas, by Thomas Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwight in 1635". (cf. Koeman II Me 191). "As with the Theatrum of Abraham Ortelius, Jodocus Hondius planned a reduced size version of Gerard Mercator's folio atlas. Carta nautica stampata dall’Istituto Idrografico della Marina. Aggiornata al 1881. La storia dell'Istituto Idrografico della Marina inizia pochi anni dopo l'unificazione nazionale con la creazione a Livorno, nel 1875, dell'Ufficio Centrale per il Servizio Scientifico della Regia Marina, dal quale avrebbero dovuto dipendere Uffici Dipartimentali eredi delle funzioni di elaborazione cartografica proprie delle istituzioni preunitarie. Fu invece creato il solo Ufficio Dipartimentale di Genova, presso il Forte San Giorgio, che a sua volta lasciò il posto, nel 1872, dall'ente cartografico nazionale denominato Ufficio Idrografico della Regia Marina. Nel 1899 tale denominazione fu trasformata in quella attuale di Istituto Idrografico della Marina. L'istituto fu fondato con regio decreto il 26 dicembre 1872 e alla sua guida fu chiamato il capitano di fregata, matematico e idrografo Giovan Battista Magnaghi, con il compito di eseguire il rilievo idrografico dei mari italiani e di produrre la documentazione nautica nazionale. Nel dopoguerra, oltre a ricognizioni per procedere all'aggiornamento delle carte nautiche, venne realizzata una nuova rete di triangolazione costiera. Incisione su zinco, con margini, in buono stato di conservazione. The history of the Istituto Idrografico della Marina began a few years after the national unification with the creation in Livorno, in 1875, of the Ufficio Centrale per il Servizio Scientifico della Regia Marina, which should have depended on Departmental Offices heirs of the functions of cartographic processing of pre-unitary institutions. It was instead created only the Ufficio Dipartimentale di Genova, at Forte San Giorgio, which in turn left the place, in 1872, by the national mapping body called Ufficio Idrografico della Regia Marina. In 1899 this name was changed to the current name of Istituto Idrografico della Marina. The institute was founded by royal decree on 26 December 1872 and at its head was called the frigate captain, mathematician and hydrographer Giovan Battista Magnaghi, with the task of performing the hydrographic survey of the Italian seas and to produce the national nautical documentation. After the war, in addition to reconnaissance to update the nautical charts, a new coastal triangulation network was created. Engraving on zinc, with margins, in good condition.
