The Set-up First Edition
New York: Covici-Friede 1928. First Edition. First Edition. Housed in a black clamshell box. An epic poem about an aging African-American boxer extremely popular on its release resulting in a number of later printings. The trade first edition was issued simultaneously with a signed limited edition both of which have become extremely scarce over time. Basis for the seminal 1949 film noir directed by Robert Wise and starring Robert Wise and Audrey Totter. While the poem's ominous mood was maintained in the film its racial issues were replaced with a complex psychological study more consistent with the noir style. Near Fine in a Very Good plus example of the scarce dust jacket. Jacket is bright with a lightly faded spine and three small chips at the crown and upper tips. Covici-Friede unknown

The Wild Party
New York: Pantheon 1994. A fine copy. 8vo. 112 pages. Original cloth-backed boards; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION first printing the suppressed first state lacking the final two lines of verse on the last page. According to Spiegelman's agent Deborah Karl Pantheon finished publication of the book and sent out author's copies for review. Coming home on the train Karl noticed the mistake on the last page and informed Spiegelman whose initial reaction was to call for the entire run to be reprinted. Instead Pantheon floated the lines in to correct the error and save costs. This is presumably one of only a small handful likely to have been preserved of this first issue. <br/><br/> Pantheon hardcover
