Fold mark inherent to being placed in an envelope the year 1900 is written in pencil at the top of the letter completing the date of June 11th written by Francis Viélé-Griffin. He thanks his fellow poet Edouard Ducoté for his support contrary to certain critics who have recently savaged him: "". merci mon cher ami de votre témoignage de sympathie."" "".thank you my dear friend for your testimonial of sympathy."" also informing him of his upcoming visit to his home having missed him the last time. 1918 - 1924 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN MARINE CORP RIFLE SERGEANT DURING WWI WHO WOULD GO ON TO INVESTIGATE THE LINDBERGH KIDKNAPPING AND PROTECT KINGS OF FINANCE AND THE PRINCE OF WALES
QUANTICO VIRGINIA FRANCE. Good. 1924. On offer is a unique bound ruled notebook often referred to as an FMP Field Message Pad. It is used by enlisted personnel as well as officers to take notes record information and serve as an aide memoire. Kept by U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Francis X Martin the notebook has 56 blank ruled pages. It is a bit more than a third complete. The notebook measures 8 in by 4 in and is in good condition. It is dated 1918 but contains entries dated 1924. According to an article at Tampa Bay Times of July 1944 Frances X. Martin was the youngest gunnery sergeant at the American Expeditionary Force he enlisted in October 1914 and served in France during the WW1 after his discharge in 1932 he was a personal bodyguard of banker J. P. Morgan and in this capacity bodyguarded many famous people including Prince of Wales Lloyd George Lord Cavendish Giuseppe Volpe and Dwight Morrow. Eventually he settled in St. Petersburg in Florida where he participated in veteran organizations and was a vice president of American Legion Post 14 and in 1942 reenlisted and served at the Marine detachment of the Miami Naval Air Station. He notes his home location as Quantico VA Overseas Depot. The first 4 pages are a listing of duties of several ranks. This is followed by a Report of Activities in Active Service. The entries begin July 12 1924 and continue through Sept 16 1924. In succinct 1-line entries he details the principal activity of each day. For example: "July 12 Left for Wakefield Mass. July 15: Fired on range July 20: Camp Inspection & Liberty July 23: Shot for record & qualified Expert 303". He notes Aug 16: ". Birthday and on Aug 22 Field Day & drew $5.84 worth of chances on a diamond ring" no lady mentioned!. The remaining pages consist of several diagrams of Platoon and Section deployment formations as well as list of names and lists of infractions. This respected Amherst Massachusetts poet was a famously thrifty and eccentric New Englander called by Robert Frost America's most neglected poet; his first volume was "Stand With Me Here" 1936 and while he published few volumes his concise intense deeply personal verse gained him a loyal following. TMS on inner panel of a 6½" X 4½" heavy stock Christmas card n.p. n.y. Fine. Front glossy panel features color photograph of lit candles amidst sprigs of evergreen and poinsettias and "Season's Greetings" card against blue background; opening at top the lower inside panel displays a printed seasonal message in red while the blank upper panel features a greeting so carefully phrased it's not a stretch to consider it an unrhymed poem. Titled "For all the children in Mr. Bean's class" it reads: "Thank you thank you for your gifts -- the / Thanksgiving card and the Christmas card / the paperweight that you made and the stamps. / May Christmas bless you all. / With love" and boldly signed in black ballpoint. Most unusual one of a kind and quite attractive. Undated but likely of early 1980s vintage. unknown

MONTEVIDEO URUGUAY. Very Good. 1880. Quarter Leather. On offer: "Proyecto de Reglamento Para la Seccion de Estudios del Ateneo del Uruguay" by Francisco Berra 1844-1906. Written in a fine calligraphic hand Spanish language leather spine folio sized the book is dated 1880 and is a lovely relic of handwritten South American history this book was beautifully produced. Research on the author finds: "an Argentine by birth he grew up and is most associated with the city of Montevideo where in 1865 he settled and studied law at the University. A lawyer journalist historian educator member of Society of Friends of Popular Education Berra worked closely with José Pedro Varela a noted sociologist journalist and politician of Uruguay but like many men he had two sides. He earned his law degree in 1872. During the Santos administration had to take refuge in Buenos Aires as a result of "Antiartiguista" position. Later he returned to Montevideo where he remained until early twentieth century. He returned to Buenos Aires to spend his last years."
