The back cover also preserved bears on the verso: Typographie E. et V. Penaud frères. Full dark green shagreen binding 20th century in the spirit of a contemporary binding of the edition. Smooth spine decorated with 2 gilt frames. Boards decorated with a wide frame of multiple fillets. Top edge gilt. Original wrappers and spine preserved. Binding executed on the original sheets the paper therefore remains uncut. This copy shows some recurring dampstains as follows: Volume 1 from p.95 to 238 pale dampstain at lower right corner then at mid-page. Volume 2 pale dampstain at upper left corner throughout. In volume 4 from p.5 to 192 dampstain at lower margin right corner. Volume 5 pale dampstain yellow halo at mid-page throughout more or less pronounced. Volume 6 Dampstain at mid-page over the first third then small stains in upper margin. Volume 7 pale dampstain in upper margin at right corner from beginning to p. 150 resuming from p. 230 to 300. Volume 9 scattered dampstains at mid-page then in corners in the margin. Volume 12 dampstain on the first 2 leaves in upper margin at corner then resuming on several leaves. Most of these stains show a yellow halo without serious consequence. Scattered foxing. Céleste de Chateaubriand the author's wife had founded this hospital in 1819 an institution whose mission was to welcome elderly priests and noble women who had become widows during the Revolution. Located on rue Denfert at number 86 as indicated by this invitation this institution still exists and welcomes retired Parisian priests. Lacks not touching text at the location of the seals. Together with these collected works uniformly bound: a volume entitled uvres diverses collecting several political pamphlets in first edition; Le Congrès de Vérone 2 vols. Delloye 1838; Essai sur la littérature anglaise and Miltons Paradise Lost both Gosselin 1839. In the volume uvres diverses important presentation inscription signed by François-René de Chateaubriand to Monsieur Henri Bayart on the half-title of La nouvelle proposition relative au bannissement de Charles X et de sa famille. This inscription dating from the writers final years is addressed to Henri Bayart 18251892 godson of the Duchesse de Berry and brother of Sophie-Josèphe Bayart a close friend of François-René and his wife. The Chateaubriands and the Bayart family formed bonds of friendship and business during the Hundred Days and remained close until the end of their lives. As staunch legitimists devoted to the Bourbon cause they even attempted the impossible in seeking to have the writer appointed governor to the young Comte de Chambord claimant to the French throne. When writing this inscription probably around 1843 Chateaubriand was at the twilight of his political and literary life; close to the Comte de Chambord then exiled in England the Bayarts once again tried to intercede on his behalf sending Henri Bayart without success to persuade the last Bourbon heir to invite the ageing writer into his circle. The author's first work of importance based on articles previously published in L'Encyclopédie on commerce that Diderot had commissioned from him. The work gives a definition of commerce and all its parts exchange agriculture colonies industries. with great concern for didacticism and endowed with perfect clarity. The author places himself under the banner of liberalism but an egalitarian liberalism and while he was a precursor of the physiocrats he would distance himself from Quesnay's doctrines. He is the first to emphasize the fundamental connection between industry and agriculture and advocate a fiscal system taxing consumption. Even if his vision of the state remains mercantile and relatively classical he brings many new ideas and his writings are filled with contemporary economic facts of primary importance. Moreover the preliminary pieces contain 4 dissertations on the foundation of the abbey of Saint Denis the death of Abbot Suger on Suger's works and on the heresy of investitures. The first edition of this work seems to date from 1694. Contemporary full marbled calf binding. Smooth spine decorated with 5 fleurons and frame roulettes. Red morocco title label. Upper headcap partly missing same for the tail headcap. 2 corners bumped. Rubbing. Crack at head to upper joint. This book by Pomey 17th century author was translated by Andrew Tooke. It contains an index of names of all the deities of mythology. The reading is interesting in more ways than one Pomey explaining the meaning of mythological allegories; we thus learn that Bacchus would be Moses.
