Giovanni Ambrogio MARINI
Les desesperés histoire héroïque
à Paris: Chez Pierre Prault 1732. Fine. Chez Pierre Prault à Paris 1732 9.50 x 17 cm 2 tomes reliés en un volume French first edition translated and arranged by Jean Serré de Rieux; illustrated with 9 figures including a frontispiece by Humblot engraved by Baquoy. Not in Cohen Livres à gravures du XVIIIe. Contemporary full calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title label. Head of spine weakened. Lacks at each joint at head and tail. Rubbing and scuffing to lower board particularly with lack at the joint of the fourth compartment. One tear p.97 in lower margin with lack. Corners slightly bumped. Marini is a 17th century writer who belongs to the last wave of Italian chivalric romances. The novel features the prince of Babylon knight of death and the princess of Babylon Zélinde his sister with whom he is passionately in love. Unable to possess her he swears to kill anyone who might possess her. The narrative is written in a hyperbolic and poetic style inspired by 16th century models but decidedly more narrative and more direct and tightened in its plot which may perhaps be due to the translator's intervention. Le berger fidelle
à Cologne: Chez Pierre du Marteau 1671. Fine. Chez Pierre du Marteau à Cologne 1671 7.50 x 13.20 cm relié Bilingual edition in Italian with the French text en regard and illustrated with a frontispiece and five Dutch plates signed Bloote particularly fine and beautiful certainly executed by Abraham Blooteling famous Dutch draftsman and engraver. Title page with sphere device. Full black morocco binding ca. 1860. Spine with raised bands in Jansenist style with blind-ruled frame. Triple blind fillet frame on boards. Rich interior border. Gilt edges. Very handsome copy perfectly executed in an unsigned master binding. Guarini was a diplomat and writer his most famous work being this play published under the original title Il Pastor fido a tragi-comic pastoral written in parallel with the work of his friend Tasso's Aminta. It made him very famous and was performed on all the stages of Europe outlasting Tasso's play which was more sentimental and lyrical. Several of his poems also met with great success and were set to music during his lifetime in the form of madrigals. Handel made an opera from Pastor fido and Rameau a cantata such was the renown of this play published in 1589 still great in the first half of the 18thth century. One can still see at the château d'Ancy le Franc a trace of this fame in the cycle of paintings illustrating the drama that adorns an entire salon. The action takes place in Arcadia threatened by plague. An oracle announces that the evil striking the country will end through the devotion of a faithful shepherd. Several rather complex intrigues finally accomplish the prophecies of the oracle. The author wished to blend various genres including that of tragedy with that of pastoral resulting in rather diffuse action but the great richness of imagination the antique chorus then accompanied by instruments felicitous well-conducted passages measured affectation clearly struck contemporary minds and those of the following century. Les harangues academiques
à Paris: Chez Augustin Courbé 1640. Fine. Chez Augustin Courbé à Paris 1640 11 x 17.40 cm relié Rare first edition. Printer's device on title page. Translation by George de Scuderi from delle dissertazioni accademiche. Translator's preface. Contemporary limp vellum binding. Unlettered smooth spine. The author himself calls his Harangues ""the fury of youth"" expressing thereby that they break free from rules. The work contains 22 harangues many on subjects from Greek mythology. The harangues are speeches pieces of eloquence addressed to an audience; at the end of each harangue the effect on the assembly is given; each harangue being preceded by an Argument a prologue allowing the stakes of the discourse to be situated. A fitting example is that of Agamemnon having killed a sacred deer and whose Diana demands in compensation the sacrifice of a young virgin namely Iphigenia his own daughter; the hero addresses the army to express his fault and his paternal feelings. These Harangues are reminiscent of the poetry contests that the Greeks organized on legends known to all. Chez Augustin Courbé hardcover

Relationi universali
in Venetia Venice: Perli Bertani 1671. Fine. Perli Bertani in Venetia Venice 1671 16 x 22.80 cm relié New edition after the original published in 1591 and 1593. Illustrated with 4 folding maps by Gioseppe Rosatio Europe Asia America and Africa on grayed background. The work had numerous reprints in the 17th century. Contemporary limp vellum binding. Spine with raised bands Jansenist style. Title in black ink. Botero's universal geography is a means of evaluating the real power of all states. Botero wrote his Relazioni following his great political work ""De la raison d'état"" and cannot be understood except in its wake. While the work is a classic universal geography with a description of all regions of the world then known in the first part the other parts describe the world from a political and religious point of view emphasizing the place of Catholic evangelism in the world. The book was originally commissioned by Cardinal Borromeo on the state of Christian religion in the world. The Relazioni are therefore the transmission of a geopolitical vision of the world but placed from the angle of the Counter-Reformation. Botero attempts to join geographical space and political space providing Catholicism and the Counter-Reformation with its future expansion. Many modern geographers made this work the birth charter of modern geography through the use of methods employed by Botero even though the book offers a triple vision of the world geographical political and religious and not unilaterally geographical. GIRDNER, John H (ca 1857-1933)
Typed Letter Signed
This prominent New York physician a close friend of William Jennings Bryan was brought in as a consultant after the assassination attempt on President Garfield and was the last survivor of the four physicians brought in to attend the president; he took part in Alexander Graham Bell's disastrous attempt to use metal detection to pinpoint and extract the bullet causing a fatal infection; later he developed the Girdner telephonic bullet probe supposedly plagiarizing the concept from Bell; in 1869 he was the first physician to use cadaver skin to cover a burn wound on a 10-year-old child. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1912 March 22. Addressed to Charles White of the New York Hall of Records later a noted Abraham Lincoln scholar. Very good. Moderately age toned. Chatty note to the tax commissioner on his medical office letterhead reading in part: "I regret as much as you can that we do not see more of each other but I have got an endless job on my hands which requires all my time sleeping and waking." Of his profession Girdner remarks: "You remember I used to want to reform other people and things: well one day I looked myself over and I have been a busy man ever since and the end of the job is not in sight. You call me a 'rich physician' and so I am but my wealth is not of the kind your office recognises as taxable fortunately for me. I think you do yourself an injustice when you speak of having 'slipped back'. You know the old Methodist doctrine that one 'cannot fall from grace' and I am certain that when I knew you you were so well grounded in the faith that not even the temptations etc. of your present occupation and environment can drag you down." Comin da Trino di Monteferrato Venezia Venice 1572 16.50 x 22.50 cm 3 parties reliées en un volume Le Imprese Illustri : con Espositioni et Discorsi del S.or Ieronimo Ruscelli Comin da Trino di Monteferrato Venezia 1572 in-4 165 x 225 cm 8 191 pp. 20 193-288 pp. 3 parts bound in one volume later full parchment Second edition the first one was published in Venice in 1566. The work is illustrated with a portrait of the author and 128 engravings of which 17 plates engraved by Nicolò Nelli et Gaspare Oselli in addition to a double page engraving by Domenico Zenoi representing the battle of Mühlberg. Each of the three parts contents an engraved title page representing a sophisticated structure the first bearing the coat of arms of Philip II of Spain. Later binding in full parchment gilt title in a triple gilt frame a little label from the library pasted on the top left-hand side of the first board sprinkled edges. The leaf HH2 was mistakenly numbered HH3. Scattered foxing. The book is a foundation in the research of heraldry Le Imprese Illustri represents an exceptional encounter between an uncommon field of study impresa heraldic badge and the amour lifted by a boom of printing techniques of illustrated books. Divided in several books the work opens with a theoretical approach for the study of impresa with the aim of demarcating this form of heraldry very close to emblem which is characterized by the combination of figure the body and motto the soul. Ruscelli here refines his work in Le Discours which he had written in 1556 upon the new edition of the first work which traits exclusively the impresa la Ragionamento di Mons. Paolo Giovio sopra I motti e I disegni d'arme e amore che comunemente chiamiamo Impresse Guide by the intrinsic visual dimension of the subject of study the author nevertheless distinguishes himself from his predecessor by an abundance of illustrations notably of plates engravings. They are exceptional for their quality which support the analytic approach of his study. The central double page featuring the battle of Mühlberg is a work by Domenico Zenoni then one of the most active engravers in Venice who was particularly known for his representation of contemporary events. Through the impresa of the princes of whom a majority were still alive at the time of the composition of the work Ruscelli's book draws up a real political map of Europe in the middle of 16th century. Moreover the representations of the two most powerful royal families of the time the Habsburg and the Valois the remarkable presence of the impresa of the ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent reflects the influence of the princes and the capacity of the impresa to overcome borders. The first author to highlight this connection Ruscelli gives an important place to feminine imprese revealing the influence women leaders acquired in the second half of the 16th century like Catherine de' Medici. An art situated between literature and pictorial work l'impresa is according to Ruscelli a know how in which women excel shown by their status and their engagement in the literary activities of the period si vede che tuttavia le Donne vengono facendo cosi gloriasa concorrenza a gli uomini che per quasi commune consentimento di loro stessi esse se ne trovino di gran lunga superiori. Each impresa being the mirror of its prince they become the demonstration of the inseparable link between the social rank and the intellectual culture during the Renaissance. They highlight the qualities and the noble values which the prince wishes to show to the world the present becoming the future. In the same way Ruscelli places his volume in posterity with dedicated epistle so that he lives eternally in the eyes the ears on the lips in the soul and the memoirs of all the men and women of high spirit and true nobles whether they be wise or ignorant but above all the princes.
