‎RED CREEK; NEW YORK. Good. 1940. On offer is an excellent collection of 4 diaries 1940 1943 1944 and 1945 and ephemera from a farm woman who lived in rural upstate New York. All diaries measure 7.5' x 5.0' each contains 183 pages and memoranda and all of them are in good condition. 1940 1944 and 1945 diaries are 100% complete 1943 diary is 50% complete. Gladys Bailey lived on a farm in upstate New York quite close to Lake Ontario. She was born on April 29th 1912. A handwritten genealogy in the ephemera indicates that she was born in 1912 maiden name Weisner and married to James Emery Bailey who came from Nelson Pennsylvania and was in the logging business. She had two children Donald and Mae. She lived on the family farm with her extended family. The diaries portray in detail the daily events and happenings on a mixed-use farm in mid-20th century: "Washed clothes and got them dry. Ironed in afternoon. Mother called Belle Robinson done chores. Had a big dish of cooked dandelions for dinner. Got a card from Arnie saying he is going to Louisiana. Set a hen on 15 eggs." Apr. 14 1941; "Mother Alice and I gathered greens - horseradish milkweed and dandelion. Alice sent for oil stove. The men planted beans. Went to Francis for fish supper. Emery took the horse over to Charlie' L. Tonight. Eddie and Carl got pigs. We got two also ." May 21 1941; "Very pleasant about 38 deg. We washed in A.M. and worked on rug in P.M. Kiddies gone to school. Men working in the woods and Emery drawing logs. Went to bed about 10 o'clock and slept good."Feb. 21 1943; "Pleasant but darn cold men ploughing clean all downstairs and Chas. room man brought 75 gal gas & 100 kerosene put 13 chicks under hen had killing frosts hardly slept at all at night Emery ploughed until 1 A.M. so long" May 18 1943; "Hear first golden robin and bobolink. Nearly all summer birds are here. We were going over to Frances but couldn't make it as men worked on cow fence until nearly noon. Let cows out first today. We were going to help Frances can greens. Mother and I cleaned and mowed lawn. Lovely day. Mother has terrible cold. Gathered dandelions to can went over to Ernest this eve" May 11 1944; "It was a nice day. Emery thrashed for Bruce;. Charlie cultivated beans in A.M. In P.M. drew wheat for . We canned 5 qts of peas ." July 26 1944; "Started sending milk to Martville boys also got some feed. Red cow came in this morn. no good I baked butter scotch cookies mother 2 cherry pie 2 apple It was a lovely sunny day. Carl made out his occupational Farm papers today" Mar 1 1945. The entries are very local. Although there is a world war raging there is no mention of it in her diaries. The entries paint a detailed and vivid picture of life on this family farm. A social historian would find it offers a goldmine of information - from daily weather to crops planted and day-to-day operations of the farm. The ephemera contains newspaper clippings cards and assorted notes. What is likely the most valuable though is a four-page handwritten genealogy of the family. An unusual transportation-related item printed on thin glazed stock this photograph bears a 4-line printed caption on the lower margin: "ROYAL POLO CART / Princess Mary Driving in the Park. / Model Built by / CHARLES GLASGOW Coach Builder PAISLEY." Above this appears a superbly-detailed miniature carriage driven by a woman in fashionable riding gear with a single white horse pulling. Above this set within an oval frame is the elderly Glasgow in suit and Derby hat. Near the caption Glasgow boldly signs and dates it. The occasion for the issuance of this is uncertain but probably ties in with the lavish 1935 Silver Jubilee celebrations of George V -- perhaps an exhibit of miniatures depicting the royal family at different times of their lives. On bright yellow onionskin-type paper penned in vibrant purple ink Gleason writes this admirer an Illinois school teacher with advice about studying and painting birds. In part: "I am happy to hear that you love to study birds and that you have a nature study class. To me the study is a great source of pleasure. I try to see in the study of birds symbols of the wonders of all nature. I try to bring thru their study a harmonious relation of the contradictory elements of experience. Hence my preoccupation is with the physical reality of my medium color and drawing thru the character of the motive I try to proportion into pleasurable relations the color with the various forms and in harmony with associations we thru common experience bring to it. Probably nothing delights the eye o man more than a beautiful bird and for the past several years I have found great pleasure in going out early in the morning sketching birds. ‎MOUNT VERNON IOWA IA. Good. 1899. On offer is a fascinating original archive of 12 manuscript diaries handwritten by the personable and charming Glenn W. Hovey. The diaries dated 1899 through 1911 offer a rare opportunity to witness the development of this young Iowa boy from elementary school days to a 24 year old college man on the cusp of following his life calling. Along with the narrative Glenn's writings have the added depth of having tucked in a great deal of ephemera such as newspaper clippings photos documents etc. It is absolutely fascinating to see this young boy grow as his age and maturation progresses so does the writing style and penmanship. Besides the typical daily mundane doings of the day and a young man raised in a good home church and social life Glenn can also wax philosophic: "Jan 1 1903 Goodbye old book. I regret to lose you as so close a companion but you will show me in later years this was one of the best years of my life". "Is the time spent in studying Greek or Latin lost No because one is studying the highest types of civilization ages & peoples that have done things". Very last entry: GOOD BYE 1911. I loved you a lot and you loved me in return. It has been the best and happiest time of life. Have been made more a man. Sunday has been a good long day and I have lived a lot. Went to church at N Park Cong and took lunch in my room then read and wrote some letters. It has been a pleasant day. A big snow storm last night covered everything and made it white. May New Year be as pleasant. Good bye." Sometimes he uses the books for financials. Clearly well educated he had a deep interest in music social times with friends love for family and was very studious. He was mentioned in the newspaper social page several times so one could assume the family was comfortably well off. ‎St. LOUIS MISSOURI. Good. 1948. On offer is a fabulous archive of a trip through Europe in the immediate aftermath of WWII. The archive comprises hundreds of letters notes photographs and ephemera. The centre-piece is a folio size scrapbook measuring about 15 inches by 10.5 inches. The scrapbook cover has separated from the binding. There are 100 pages and it is about 20% complete. There are two diaries which are used to record the trip experiences only. The first diary measures about 5 inches by 3 inches. It contains about 180 pages and is about 40% complete. The cover and binding are intact and the handwriting is dense but readable. The second diary measures 6 inches by 4.5 inches and contains 365 pages. It is about 13% complete. The spine is broken and the front cover attached at the back of the binding has separated from the body of the text. The handwriting is dense but readable. There is a packet of over 5 dozen letters. A second package contains over 100 items including numerous black and white photographs cards notes etc. In 1948 Gloria Lee Bigewet was able to participate in an American Youth Hostel cycling trip in Europe - specifically France Italy and Switzerland. This was a tumultuous time in Europe. The most devastating war in history had just ended with death and destruction on an almost unimaginable scale; the Iron Curtain was descending over eastern Europe; the Berlin Airlift was underway. Casual research has found almost no biographical information for the author beyond the fact that she married Harold J. Becker in 1950 had 2 daughters and was later divorced. She left St. Louis May 31st 1948 for New York City to board her ship - S.S. Marine Tiger which sailed June 3rd. The scrapbook contains numerous black and white photographs of varying sizes depicting the students who went on the trip. They include a large photo of the Roman Colosseum and numerous other locations in Europe. There is the American Youth Hostel flag which she flew from her bicycle boarding pass packing guides itineraries a list of all participants on the trip and cards and letters: "You can see over the whole city and it's a beautiful but sad sight. Sad because the houses are almost completely destroyed. Piza was one of the hardest hit cities during the bombing raids and you can sure tell it. By the way I managed to take a very effective picture this morning of the ruins or rather just part of them . " letter home from Piza June 29 1948. There is a complete copy of the on-board ship's daily newspaper - the Tiger Rag. There is also a lengthy newspaper article Workings of the Black Market in Paris explaining the how of the black market operates in practice. There are also quite a number of items such as tickets program descriptions etc that are tucked into the pages of the scrapbook. The first diary covers the months leading up to the trip. It is full of the typical events in the life of a busy teenager. It also contains references to the man she will eventually marry: "Bill called. Becker came over at 4:30 and fixed my bicycle put lights on and stayed for dinner. After dinner we walked out to the park and rode the electric boats and talked a long time. He told me how much he'll miss me. Oh! I think he is so wonderful and nice - I really like him so much!" May 25. This diary ends on May 30th with her saying goodbye to friends before she leaves. Included in the diary are 2 postcards from France showing a hotel in Artenay Loire and the great Chateau of Chenonceaux. The second diary deals specifically with the 16 days of her trip. It is well-written with a very good eye for detail. she comments on daily 50 mile bike rides the scenery and surrounding countryside train rides hotels hostels cute boys she met the food she ate and places that she visited. ". From there we met Goodie Betty W and Marge at the Academy of Fine Arts and saw Michelangelo's statue of David. It's magnificent. And then we visited the church across the street which also has a museum. . Went window shopping. . After dinner soup and some meat sauce and some fish concoction Jack and I walked to Diurno Square ." July 9. Awoke at 8:30 and washed dressed etc. Getting ready for church. I'm going to Notre Dame Cathedral for services this morning ." Aug 1. There are over 5 dozen letters in one packet including letters from her to her family letters from her parents and friends such as Harold. There is a delightful letter dated June 3rd to her from her mother and father: "My Darling Babe . When I arrived home from Council this afternoon . there was a slip of paper from the post office stating that there was a letter there awaiting me with five cents due. .I was so thrilled when I read your interesting letter that I had to re-read it three times ." her mother's comments. It is lonesome now but your mother and I are more than happy that you are able to get a world wide experience and first-hand knowledge of the other side of our big world. As you know you are our pride and joy ." her father's comments. The letters provide other glimpses into what is happening at that time. For instance the letter from Harold dated June 12th notes that the Freedom Train came in to St. Louis. This train crisscrossed the United States in an effort to celebrate America and her ideals. At each stop it displayed Americana and related historical artifacts. The remaining packet contains over 100 additional photographs postcards notes and other ephemera. Quite a number of the photographs are annotated. For example one picture has the notation: "Gloria Lee - sitting at a cafe in front of the gallery del Lanzi - Florence Italy July 1948". A note records the following observation: "Fields of scarlet poppies right up to the track; lots of farmland in all different shades of green with poppies intertwined. . faces all weather-beaten. Women manage to buy rouge & lipstick .". This is a superb collection of material. It is a treasure trove for a historian researching the years immediately following WWII. From a European perspective it gives first hand observations of life as they cycle through these countries.
