While the papers are unsigned and we cannot guarantee they are in his hand the likely hood given the dates mentioned and the source being the estate of his son Judge Walter B. Jones of Montgomery we are quite confident of the assertion of authorship. He was an officer in the Confederate Army and had also published a very rare pamphlet on the Last Days of the Army of Northern Virginia. 1885 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF 19TH CENTURY 'ECLECTIC MEDICAL' EDUCATION USING MANY OF THE FORBIDDEN AND DANGEROUS DRUGS OF TODAY
CINCINNATI CINCINATTA OHIO. Very Good. 1885. On offer is a super very interesting manuscript relic of 19th Century medical and pharmacological knowledge treatment and procedure being a 200 page large 12 x 7.5 inch notebook handwritten by G.R. Hill in 1885 while he was a student at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati. The book is an incredible snapshot of medical science before the age of aspirin penicillin and other game changers. We note that in some cases the cures appear worse than the diseases. There is an examination section at the end where presumably you answered and were then given a medical license. There is also a section on "Civil Malpractice" dated 1885 given by one 'Professor Christian' that goes into the patient being able to recoup monies for remedies gone wrong. HISTORICAL NOTES: The Institute was part of the 'Eclectic Movement' in medicine focusing on herbal and other curatives to relieve the pain and discomfort of symptoms and at the time considered an radical and progressive alternative in an era where bleeding and purging patients was still the norm. Graduating and becoming Dr G R Hill he practiced in Chicago and in Kendall Wisconsin. He then contributed to various Eclectic Medical Journals through the early 1900s. The Eclectic Medical Institute began in the 1840s and by the 1880s was at its peak. Many prominent doctors taught there and what this notebook contains is nothing short of the entire course curriculum for the college including the professors and their departments the curriculum for each department the body's diseases and their cures and many many RX's using different herbs and substances many derived from ancient origins especially from the Chinese. Let us remember that this was before the use even of aspirin so this is the dark ages indeed for medicine. The notes in here go into Venereal Diseases like Syphilis and Gonorrhoea quite a bit. It was taught by Professor H K Whitford. Of course fevers respiratory diseases and other internal diseases are mentioned also. We note with fascination that many treatments include what are today considered illegal or highly dangerous drugs: Cannabis Indices Cocaine Cantharides Spanish Fly opium Digitalis Cyanide acids galore and other potentially deadly "curatives". These are found at the back of this notebook which contains over 100 pages of herbal and other medicines all alphabetized their RX's and their uses. For instance Cannabis Americana and Cannabis Indices marijuana were at this time synthesized into a "resin and volatile oil." You were to take "1 to 5 M every 3 hours by resin or oil." It was used for "passive haemorrhage from uterus and cystitis; also gonorrhoea syphilis chronic celulitis profuse menstruation" and a cure for "Nymphomania!" One took Cannabis Indices for this 'disease' which was exhibited as "A hyperthesia of nerves that supply the sex organs." So it dilated the blood vessels and purportedly stopped the problem. In "excessive sexual intercourse" it goes on to state "or in excessive masturbation small dose of Cannabis Indices frequently repeated every 3 to 4 hours in 1/2 to 1 m dose." There are also cures in here for an opium habit and a cure for alcoholism which they thought "dilated the brain blood vessels." Cocaine Digitalis Spanish Fly and Cyanide are also used for symptoms of maladies which today are quite laughable. However many oils derived from flowers and plants in this compendium are still used today like Eucalyptus Oil Wintergreen various teas and other oils which you can buy anywhere today. On offer is a fascinating original January 1 1930 to November 9 1930 manuscript diary handwritten by Grace Elinore Chapman later Nash a 21 year old woman a concert violinist and teacher who would one day soon find love move to the Philippines and then in 1942 become a prisoner of war under cruel and severe treatment by her Japanese captors. Casual research finds an article regarding her life titled: "An Unbelievable Life: Mother wife teacher POW author - Grace Nash packs a lot of living into 97 years 'Amazing' Grace; Mother Wife Teacher POW Author: Grace Nash Packs a Lot of Living into 97 Years." Grace's story is truly unbelievable from how she met her husband to her capture and enduring three years of the most awful treatment and conditions and even giving birth in prison but she did endure and thrived to a goodly age. She is noted for having refused her captors admonition to give up her violin and her refusal and subsequent use of the violin led to her salvation and maintained her sanity. However her first book "That We Might Live" an autobiography of her time in prison shared so that others could learn of the horrors she and her family faced. OWEN OSGOOD INDIANA. Fair. 1892. On offer is a small group of two 2 interesting November 1892 through May 1894 manuscript diaries handwritten by Grace M. Griffin of Owen Indiana. Grace is as many young women of the time occupied with friends and family and we read a more than casual interest by the writer in sewing and quilt making with frequent entries about she and her mother making aprons dresses clothes for her sister's dolls a doll hat for a family friend's little girl . She also mentions many many names of friends and visitors and she leads a very active life giving remarkable detail of a young woman's life in the late 19th Century. We note with fascination that Grace became the deputy postmaster her father being the Postmaster for the Osgood Post Office in 1893. She was paid $300 a year. Her father was well known as he also worked as a newspaper man and ran for State Senator. The diary is contained in two 2 large 'legal size' perforated at the top note pads of about 80 pages each for a total of about 160 pages in total. Each page is covered with writings making for a very detailed very intimate retelling of Grace's family and her life. 1903 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A LOVELY UPSTATE NEW YORK WOMAN
EVANS MILLS NEW YORK WATERTOWN. Good. 1903. On offer is a delightful diary of 18 yr old Grace Merritt of Evans Mills NY a small village in upstate NY just south of the St. Lawrence River. The cover has come loose but the binding of all of the pages is intact. The handwriting is clear and legible. The diary measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. It covers the period from January 1 1903 until July 25 1903. While most entries are short there are several that extend over more than a page. Grace's mother had passed away years earlier and she had assumed the role of homemaker for her father and younger sister Nina. The diary is replete with references to daily life and community happenings. ". Henry Drake and Mr. Kinney helped pa butcher today". Jan 16. ". Been to work all day at the meat and lard." Jan 19. ". Worked nearly all the A.M. Went down to Mrs. Kinney's in the afternoon and carried home the sausage cutter and a piece of spare rib". Jan 28. "Not a very pleasant day. I hung out the clothes to dry moped the floor and done all the other work and Nina helped do some of the work. Papa went to the village. Nina went up to Mrs. Bakers but did not go in and came back and staid to Jessie's the rest of the P.M. Nina and I went down to the I. O. G. T. We had a big time. We took in 2 new members. The Companions had a Sugar Social and invited the Foresters but papa did not go" Mar 28 . "Pa ployed ploughed part of the day. Bertha Lyons came down before we had breakfast to go with Nina to school. Papa helped Mr. Drake get off a rut hole out here. Nina took down 1 1/2 dozen eggs at $1.50/doz." Apr 15. Also included in the diary are several other items. Two postcards confirm the community - Evans Mills and her father's name - William. There is a label of Lincoln brand preserves in good condition. There is also a damaged cover of a poetry book titled Harvest of Thorns. Another interesting insert of a pamphlet titled How To Become A Member Of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Accompanying it is a handwritten note dated June 14 1927 twenty five years after this diary was written in which Grace asks for application forms. Of note is that it is signed Grace Messina. Grace married in May 1918. There are a great many references to local people and this would be an excellent reference point for someone doing research on local families in Jefferson County NY. It is an excellent reference for gender studies as it shows clearly the day-to-day lifestyle and expectations on a young woman at the turn of the century in rural America. A social historian would find the diary a treasure trove of details among the web of relationships in this small community. 1909 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE DAUGHTER OF A PIONEER JOURNALIST AND ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE BOSTON HERALD
PORTLAND MAINE ME. Good. 1909. On offer is an original manuscript 1909 through 1913 diary handwritten by Grace Waldron Calvert the daughter of Colonel William H. Waldron a pioneer journalist and one of five original publishers of the Boston Herald. He was instrumental in developing several other publications but in 1872 he established the Lewiston Weekly Gazette and in 1876 his son-in-law Thomas E. Calvert Grace's husband entered into partnership with him and became editor of the Gazette. Colonel Waldron died in 1881. Grace and Thomas of Portland Maine belonged to a County Club took numerous trips to New York attend balls plays recitals and even a reception at the white house in 1912 and much more. She also belongs to a "Current Events" club. Grace's daughter was a soprano singer who studied under Alfred Brinkler. Ephemera such as newspaper clippings inside the diary mention her events. There is also a newspaper article which talked about an illness her other daughter Dorothy experienced and the diary also talks of this. Dorothy spends over a month in the hospital. His speeches were collected and published by one of those pupils Petrus Burmannus the Elder 1668-1741. The collection contains 17 speeches of Graevius and opens with his inaugural speech of 1661. There is also the speech he delivered on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the University. Furthermore there are four speeches for William III one for the stadholder of Holland Willem III on the occasion of his expedition to England 1689 an eulogy of William III King of Great Britain1691 a funeral speech for Queen Mary II of England the wife of William III 1695 and a funeral speech for William 1702. Graevius was made 'Historiographer Royal' to William III Remarkable is Graevius speech of 1665 'De Cometis contra vulgi opinionem Cometas esse malorum nuntios' in which he contended to the chagrin of orthodox protestants that comets did not herald disaster for the earth. People should not fear comets because these firy celestial objects belonged to the works of God which obeyed the law of nature. To eradicate this cometary superstition he devoted part of his speech to a critical analysis of historical accounts. Graevius was skeptical about the biblical foundation of the belief that comets were signs of God's displeasure. 'Graevius oration overtly questioned the 'post hoc ergo propter hoc' argument as well as the argument from universal consent.
