One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe edition on verso some foxing and small corner defect. Lithograph inspired by an extract from La maison d'exil by Guillaume Pilon. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe Moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too insubstantial owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a fine printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""postomania"". The poster originally popular and pasted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. Transverse folds inherent to posting. Very fine letter of thanks from poet to poet. ""I thank you for the admirable article you devoted to me. You have felt my soul like no one else."" Jean Royère had indeed written a laudatory article upon the publication of Alcools in the June 20 1913 issue of La Phalange: ""Here gathered in an 18mo of barely two hundred pages is almost the entire poetic work of Apollinaire. Fifteen years of poetry rest in this small volume. I therefore do not open it without almost a preconceived admiration. In poetry abundance means sterility and one only writes three volumes in a year through inability to devote one's life to a book. Apollinaire evidently will leave only one book of verse like Baudelaire and Mallarmé like Rimbaud: this is a considerable chance of immortality for the true poet is one who has this too rare gift of condensation."" "". I will come to see you in the coming days to thank you first and also to speak to you about naturalization I am appalled by the new law."" The poet here alludes to the Three Year Law dubbed the Barthou Law increasing the duration of military service from two to three years in view of preparing the French army for a possible war with Germany. If Apollinaire's biography prefers to focus on the publication of his works in this year 1913 the letters his mother addresses to her son show that the latter moves heaven and earth to avoid military service and be naturalized as quickly as possible: ""For your papers an Italian colonel attached to the ministry of war who was witness for your act of recognition had written to me once to give me the steps to follow so that you would be exempted from military service in Italy and for your French naturalization. I am going to write to him moreover to ask him to see to the Town Hall."" letter from Angelika Kostrowicka of July 12 1913. War would come soon and on August 3 1914 the day after mobilization the stateless poet would file a request for voluntary enlistment accompanied by a naturalization request. The latter would only be granted to him in 1916. An interesting letter written at the dawn of the Great War bearing witness to Guillaume Apollinaire's two passions: poetry and France. unknown‎

A beautiful copy on non-brittle paper which is unusual and a rare and surprising handwritten inscription signed by Guillaume Apollinaire: “à monsieur le critique littéraire de La Libre Parole hommage de Guill. Apollinaire."" “To the literary critic of La Libre Parole tribute by Guill. Apollinaire.” Who could be the recipient of this inscription unnamed but addressed to a collaborator of the famous anti-Semitic newspaper founded by Édouard Drumont The ostensibly philo-Semitic position of Guillaume Apollinaire is well-known. In an 1899 letter he boasts to Toussaint Luca that he tried to provoke Henri Rochefort who was reading La Libre Parole by deploying L'Aurore in front of him but as the young Dreyfusard regrets without daring to engage the controversy. In 1902 he publicly marked his fraternity with the Jewish people with a new publication in La Revue blanche “Le Passant de Prague"": “I love Jews because all Jews suffer everywhere”. Then in Alcools he will dedicate a poem to the Hebrew religion: ""La Synagogue"". But it is undoubtedly through his poem “Le Juif latin” published in L'Hérésiarque et Cie that Apollinaire poetically reveals the essence of his particular link with Judaism: that he shares the condition of eternal stranger the feeling of uprooting and the search for identity. It may therefore seem very surprising that this poet whose only trace of political commitment was in favor of Dreyfus dedicated his work to a La Libre Parole journalist even if he is a literary critic. And in fact La Libre Parole does not contain literary columns! Each day is decorated with a title vignette 3.5 cm x 5 cm and a genealogical table which precedes it and details everything the poem treats. A compass rose figure p. 171 another of the celestial map p. 220; one of climatic zones p. 281; one of the zodiac p. 367; two on eclipses p. 426 and 430. Text in beautiful italic type the commentary which follows in roman. The original of Bartas's La Sepmaine appeared in 1578. Full glazed blonde calf binding 18th century. Raised spine decorated with small tools roulette at foot. Chocolate morocco title label. Triple fillet frame on covers. Red edges. Frieze on leading edges and inside. Two cuts at head with fragile headcap. Two corners slightly bumped. Small lacks at head of upper joints. One stain p. 67. Some leaves trimmed short. One dampstain from page 492 to page 506 at right corner lower margin resuming page 561 on several leaves. Another dampstain at bottom of page reaching the text slightly from page 714 to the end. Soiling in margins of title page. Numerous pagination errors: after p. 184 returns to 165 up to 186 then pagination jumps to 209 up to 216 then returns to 197. Pagination goes back to 204 up to 210 then resumes at 233. New error after page 561 which on verso jumps to 512 and continues to the end. All without lacks. Important edition as the genre of the poem calls for commentaries and erudition. The first week and the second are encyclopedic poems which follow the unfolding of Genesis and offer the reader the sum of knowledge of the world. Bartas's poetry had immense success in its time perhaps because one also found in it a wealth of teachings on the Ancients science inventions. Goethe was a fervent admirer it was less appreciated subsequently in France which judged it good in its ideas but too unbridled for its taste. The Renaissance had much taste for paraphrase and the week which is already a form of paraphrase of Genesis is here in turn paraphrased but this time by a scientific discourse which illuminates its implementation and the foundations of its writing as much on astronomy natural science botany mathematics as the whole of knowledge which glorifies Man. Guillaume Dubois known as Crétin 1460-1525 was treasurer of the Sainte-Chapelle at Vincennes then cantor of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and ordinary chaplain to King François I. He was recognized as a master notably by Jean Lemaire de Belges and Clément Marot. He is ranked among the Grands Rhétoriqueurs.
