No Place: International Business Machines. Good. 1947. Paperback. This is a trade sized booklet with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Good only condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine joint has noticeable rubbing and wear. The covers have creasing and it appears to have been folded at least once. There is a previous owner's penciled name on the front cover and penciled scribbles to both inner covers. The previous owner's name is inked on the inside front cover along with an ink stamped date of Nov. 12 1947. Many of the text pages have penciled circles or underlining and there are a couple of pages with spots of foxing. Unlike earlier more flashily produced copies of this songbook the 1947 edition is very stripped down - with no copyright information only the company name on the title page date or introductory remarks. Even the name has been stripped down Early copies of the booklet were titled: The Songs of the IBM. This copy includes 48 different lyrics on 20 pages starting with; Ever Onward Ever Onward I B M through the usual patriotic songs; America Star-Spangled Banner The Caissons go Rolling Along Marine Hymn to 1940's standards; On the Road to Mandalay My WIld Irish Rose Sweet Adeline and throughout songs that have been modified to trumpet the business itself and instill pride and cohesion; Hail to the I B M To Thomas J. Watson President IBM The IBM Country Club Song and more. Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vco. (17 x 11 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 126 p., 11 unnumbered b/w plates, 8 numerous b/w ills., tables. Slight creasing on some pages, and slight stains, otherwise a good copy. First and only edition of this rare photography guide in Ottoman literature, prepared and published by Ipekci Brothers. This richly illustrated guide tells how to use a camera to take good and artistic photographs, and introduces parts of a camera. Some good photographic examples in this book as separate plates. The Ipekçi family, who had been engaged in the silk business for several generations in Thessaloniki, Greece, continued the silk trade for a while in Constantinople, where they migrated in 1893. The brothers, who first opened a store called "Hüsn-i Intihap" in Istanbul, and then the Thessaloniki Bonmarche, one of the biggest stores of the period, turned to filmmaking with Ihsan Ipekçi's initiative after the Thessaloniki Bonmarche was demolished during the arrangement of Eminönü Square. The family, which started operating the Alhambra Cinema, which was opened in 1923, converted "Paten Sarayi" [i.e. Skating Palace] into a movie theater and opened the Melek (today's Emek) cinema a year later. Ahmed Ihsan was an important figure of the late 19th century and also the founder of a current in Turkish literature, "Servet-i Fünûn" [i.e. The Wealth of Sciences or Knowledge]. He established a prominent printing house in the Ottoman Empire, and he is known as the translator of the first Jules Verne translation into Turkish. The oldest of this precious collection dates back to the 8th Century AH (14th Century AD) and the other manuscripts are produced later. Most of the manuscripts presented here belong to Mathnavi but some copies of Divan-e-Shams and Fih-e- Ma Fih are also being displayed here. Early leather over boards with a modern reback in brown leather with spine rules in gilt and with a burgundy leather title label. A sound copy. Professionally conserved. Front flyleaf is tipped in. THE TITLE PAGE IS IN FACSIMILE as are the next two leaves the leaf in printed in italics front and back and the leaf on the Second Charter by Charles II front and back. Very nicely done. The leaf following the last facsimile leaf of Charles II is the remains of the original leaf on Charles II 3/4 of the page encapsulated in tissue and properly tipped in. The rear flyleaf blank is also tipped in. The leather spine is fresh and clean. The boards are scuffed bumped and abraded with a piece chipped out from the top corner of the front cover. The text block is sound likely re-sewn. The text is toned with occasional foxing. The title page to the second part also dated 1804 shows heavier foxing. The conservation work is very good. On offer is an original 1927 manuscript diary handwritten a young woman whose name we believe is Irene Nafziger and the diary details her first year in the Davenport Kissimmee St. Cloud Florida area where she and her mother moved to in 1927. We surmise Irene might be a Nafziger as she mentions Grandma Nafziger. There was a Henry Nafziger in Davenport during this time. Irene a clerk and a teacher rarely misses a day and relates the mundane day to day duties and chores but also she shares her feelings to her diary. The diary is in decent shape but is coming off the binding and has some staining. 1955 ORIGINAL PHOTO ALBUM AND PHOTO DIARY OF THE MASSIVE JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES' 'TRIUMPHANT KINGDOM' ASSEMBLY IN NUREMBURG GERMANY: A CELEBRATION OF JOY AT THE HOME BASE OF THE NAZIS WHO WOULD HAVE DESTROYED THEM
NUREMBURG GERMANY. Good. 1955. On offer is a super original scrapbook album and photographic diary detailing an important and significant post War tour of Germany by over 100000 Jehovah's Witnesses. The 1955 "Triumphant Kingdom" Assembly of Jehovah's Witnesses Convention was held at the Nuremberg Stadium site of many Nazi rallies. The trip and the site and even the name were obviously chosen with care to send a message to Nazis whose dead leader was committed to destroying the Witnesses as he tried with Jews homosexuals Gypsies etc. One online source provides: "Conventions have also been organized in some countries where Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted or were not allowed to preach for some time. Those were very emotional occasions for those who were there. For example Adolf Hitler had said that he would destroy Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany. But in 1955 in Nuremberg 107000 Witnesses had a convention in the same place where Hitler and his supporters used to gather. Many of those there cried because they were so happy." The book was compiled we believe was Miss Irene Schwarz from Phoenix Arizona. While she has not specified ownership her name on some of the postcards slipped between the pages are addressed to her in Phoenix Arizona. Sailing to Quebec City first then aboard The Arosa Star and her shipboard observations and activities take the first 20 pages followed by 27 pages devoted to touring England Switzerland and France. Finally they head for Germany for the Triumphant Kingdom Convention and 5 pages are full of photos from that event. While in Germany she takes several photos showing the war damage which is still quite visible considering the war only ended less than 10 years earlier. The 11 x 13 inch scrapbook has about 200 original photos and about two dozen postcards most with handwritten titles which identify the photos. Handwritten by a boy who identifies himself as I.R.L.W. Brown of Dallas Texas attending the Gould School writes in the Preface found on page 17: "This little book is beautifully dedicated to My Darling Mother who has labored with me many days to make me what I am. She has worked eleven years more or less to make me a good manly religious industrious kind gentle and sweet boy. I will try to stay what she has made me and improve too. It is also dedicated to My Darling Father who has tried to make me the best kind of a boy too for more or less than eleven years. I have tried to find little things which might amuse or interest them." The 8 1/2" by 7" dated December 27 1905 on the inside cover contains 91 numbered pages contains headings such as Little Notes of Interest; Little conundrums and jokes; Proverbs; "Now Keel Right Over" illustrations; The Star Spangled Banner; poems and pages with drawings and/or cut-outs dedicated to each month of the year.
